The Looking Glass (Part 6)

Chapter 6

Michael was cold. Physically for once instead of emotionally. The
temperature here was pretty cold, it was after all October. The narrow
street they were walking on was deserted and shadows could be seen every
where since dusk had fallen twenty minutes ago.

He and Nikita were walking arm and arm down the street, playing their
part as Mr. and Mrs. Sergenell, a newly married couple who were sight
seeing in the city for their honeymoon. He enjoyed feeling her hand in
his but he couldn’t concentrate on that at the moment. All his senses
were tuned on everything around him. They had to catch a glimpse of this
killer.

Over to the left of him, he saw something move in the shadows. He made
himself look in the other direction to encourage the person to attack.

The person took the bait, swooping down on them faster than Michael had
thought a person could be. Nikita screamed and went for her gun.
Michael silently willed her to put it away. They didn’t want o scare the
killer off before they got a glimpse of his face. All Michael could see
of him as he hurtled toward them was blond hair and manacling dark eyes.
There seemed to be something wrong with his face.

Everything seemed to move in slow motion as the man grabbed Nikita. She
yelled out as the man... bit her neck? Nikita was punching his chest now
with all her strength but it hardly seemed to phase him. He pulled his
head back from her neck long enough to slap her . “Stop struggling!
You’ll only make it more painful.

Nikita brought her knee up to make painful contact with his groin. He
swore and stepped back. That was all Michael needed. He pulled his gun
and fired twice. He was out o line with the mission profile but Nikita
was more important. The shots got the guy through the stomach and
shoulder.

Both operatives watched in shock as the man stumbled backwards but showed
no sign that the bullets had injured him greatly. “You’re more trouble
that you’re worth.”

Michael pressed his finger to the trigger, planning on emptying his gun
into the thing, definitely not human. Suddenly another voice joined in.

“Well what do we have here?”

A petite blond girl walked warily into the midst of the fray. It was on
the tip of Michael's tongue to say something along the lines of ‘we’re
police officers and this guy won’t come quietly something that would get
an innocent out of the line of fire. But this girl looked like she knew
more about the situation than they did.

She looked to be about seventeen but Michael had seen the same look in
her eyes in the eyes of some of the older section operatives after they
had come back from a particularly gruesome mission.

She looked at the weapon that Michael held with more disgust than fear.
“guns, yuck. Not very effective by the way”. Nikita held up to fingers,
covered in blood that was slowly trickling down her neck from two small
puncture wounds. “He attacked us” she said in a shaky voice. Michael
wondered just how much blood she had lost.

The girl nodded “They’re known to do that”.

The gut who had attacked them spoke up now. “Well this definitely takes
the cake. All I want is to grab a quick meal when these two whip out
their weapons and give me one hell of a stomach ache. Now you’re here
and this day has become a rapid descent into hell”.

The girl finally seemed to notice him “I told you to leave the country!”

He chuckled “If you hadn’t yet noticed, this is out out of country. A
deals a deal. You said you’d leave me alone if I left and I left. It’s
not my fault you ended up here too.”

The girl flushed slightly “I can’t really ignore the fact that you were
doing the whole big sucking thing. It’s my job”

He growled at her “according to most of the people I’ve talked to, you
haven't been doing the job. Saving the world go to your head?”

The glared at each other. Michael was more confused than he had ever
been. What was going on?

“Who or what are you?” he asked.

The girl practically snarled at him “Who the hell are you?”
