MT. KATAHDIN

The ultimate in the east! Remote, high, extreme, dangerous, and challanging. There is no easy way up. No train or auto road. Just a walk straight to the sky. A view of more lakes and woodlands than anywhere in the continental United States. The relatively flat land around Katahdin magnifies its spot on the horizon. On a clear day, its view is only spoiled by the curvature of the earth. That slight curvature along with Mt. Abraham to the southwest is what blocks the view of Mt. Washington.

I recently flew by both mountains. While Washington was a step above everything in the massive Presidential Range, Katahdin was a monolith, without rival, overseeing all.

This photo was taken on a blustery but clear September day in 1993. We climbed up the Abol Slide after camping below. The coolness kept it clear and the wind kept the haze away.
