Selvam : Dosimetrist/ Health Services Manager/ Radiation Therapist

Hi, I am trained in Health Services Management, board certified in Medical Dosimetry (CMD),by MDCB-Medical Dosimetry Certification Board; board registered in Radiation Therapy,RT(Therapy) by ARRT-American Registry of Radiation Technologists; Memberships in Professional Bodies : AAMD and ASRT, Accredited by Australian Institute of Radiography, (A.I.R)).

Dosimetrists specialise in planning the required treatment for the patients with the various diagnostic imaging and treatment modalities available. Utilising the best available computer hardware and software dosimetrists plan to maximise the dose delivery to the required site.This has to be done with maximum dose to target but with minimal dose to critical organs near the treatment site. Once the appropriate combination of beam modifiers are found the final plan is approved by the oncologist and physicist and the treatment is delivered to the patient by the radiation therapists, according to that plan.

A Radiation Therapist
is a trained health care professional who treats cancer patients with measured amounts of radiation according to prescription by a Radiation Oncologist.

Radiation Therapists (RTs) use machines of advanced technology like Linear Accelerators, Simulators, CT and 3-D Computer Planning Systems to treat patients accurately. Precise delivery and recording is essential. RTs work as a team with nurses, doctors, physicists,dosimetrists, diagnostic radiographers and social workers to give the best care possible to patients.


Special Interests: Health Services Management, Health Related Quality of Life (QoL); Health Economics and Health Policy, Stereotactic Radiation Therapy/Surgery and Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT). Awarded Fellowship in 1998, at 2nd Takahashi Memorial Workshop on 3DCRT in Nagoya, Japan

INTERESTS: Health Administration, Ethics and Quality Healthcare,Surf the net, travel, read journals(Health Economics, Quality standards, Medical and Computer related) and fiction, peer review professional journal articles
Other interests: computer information systems, in which I have an Advance Diploma, 3-D computer applications, computer hard ware/upgrading and hospital/healthcare management. I have spent my National Service in the air-force; I like to keep in touch with issues related to air craft, air-travel and air defence.

I also help people understand about Quality Healthcare and Healthcare affordability

I was privileged to be selected for an international exchange programme (JICA) in Japan and spent a month there. I like to know things about Japanese Culture/History.

I also have an an active interest in Health Care Administration and Management of Health Care Services.

I keep in touch with friends from diverse fields of Healthcare Standards, Research, Health Care related Quality of Life, Medicine & Health Management, Science, Education, Computing, Business and Finance. I also keep myself current by attending relevant seminars in Radiation Therapy, Medical Dosimetry organised by relevant professional associations and review academic journal articles, periodically.
