Not Today

A honey thick gravity
loosens itself from the
fastened wires of my skin
and slips away,
intent on following
the joyful peace it saw
in those eyes . . .
And there is no answer as yet,
I can only feel a part of me
journeying somewhere,
burrowing deep
and seeking answers
for its calm suffering,
afraid that it might only be
taken
in silence,
yet somehow certain
that soon sound so loud
will awaken the air,
and insist, quite gently,
that it learn to breathe again.
