MENTAL issue 1 & 2 reviews...

SWEET TOOTH SAMPLER SPRING/SUMMER 1999 SWEET TOOTH

I received this in the mail for free because I was smart enough to get on the SWEET TOOTH mailing list. I am very impressed with this release. It should be sold. People do not deserve a free sample of professional underground music by kick ass veteran musicians. I can't recall a sample compilation ever meshing together so well. This sampler should garner the featured bands the attention (fame/fortune) they deserve. Some of the genres featured: ambient - electronica - hard-edged - industrial - trip hop music. Talents featured: ALIEN RADIO STATION, HOLLOWPHONIC, MALHAVOC, SOULSTORM, STICKY. I hope the SWEET TOOTH guys send me some promo. copies of the featured bands, so I can get a more in-depth listen of these cool songsters and their sounds.

"SCRATCHES & NEEDLES" a tribute to THE NILS MAGWHEEL RECORDS

Now, I had heard of THE NILS, but never their music until I received this CD (hopefully the label will send me THE NILS' "Green Fields in Daylight" anthology album) "Scratches & Needles" has various artists covering some of THE NILS tunes. I can confidently say that the album cover/insert is presented very well. This tribute seems to be quite appropriate in the vibe I get from reading the liner notes regarding THE NILS. The whole scheme "Recorded and mixed by various people at various locations at a variety of times." says it all.

ADAM WEST 13 deluxe (FANDANGO)

Their bio says it best: "Take two parts STOOGES, one part BLACK SABBATH, one part MISFITS, a touch of KISS, and pepper it with the best 60s garage punk and you've got ADAM WEST" These guys remind me of a kick ass upbeat American version of the HEADSTONES. Aside from music, I'd bet my money on ADAM WEST over HEADSTONES in a no holds barred fight, though I'm thinking you'd find these guys too busy getting' down with the T&A-let's not forget the pussy, at a strip club after performing a kick ass set, than brawlin'. Listenin' to the pro production of "13 deluxe", you can hear the high level of effort/energy these guys are lettin' loose, and you just know that ADAM WEST are the real deal of hard workin' musicians, playin' their breed of old school R&R the way it should be. Their big garage rock punk sound is sure to blow the roof of any garage, and cause a R&R riot. The buzz these guys got goin' is well deserved, and I can only believe greater success for them is not far off. On a sillier note, track two's on this CD's called ".357" and they have a funny WHEEL OF FORTUNE theme song riff sound happenin'.

GWAR - WE KILL EVERYTHING (METALBLADE RECORDS/ATTIC)

GWAR goes at it again the only way they want to, straight to my orifices' (esp. My ears, you sick readers). I appreciate that they mix it up and try different musical genres with their albums, while still maintaining their own presence, instead of totally rehashing like many other bands. This time around, to my surprise, I notice they are really doing the new school punk sound, which I hate, but it's okay 'cause they are forever the scum dogs of the universe (though on this album it is stated that they are merely scum, not dogs at all). There are moments where this album reminds me more of a GREEN JELLY release than one of GWAR. This album is a good listen, a must for any GWAR fan, with the regular explicit silliness we all expect from these pioneers of childish filth.* *I wish they'd come out with another X-COPS album.
