Studio Report
The band:
Dave Mustaine (guitar/vocals), Marty Friedman (lead guitar), Dave Ellefson (bass), Jimmy DeGrasso (drums)

The Album:
Risk

The producer:
Dann Huff

Tracklisting:
Seven, Wonderlust, The Doctor Is Calling, I’ll Be There, Breadline, Crush ‘Em, Duke Nukem Theme, Time 1, Time 2, Ecstacy, Prince Of Darkness, and Insomnia.

Mustaine says:
"What we’ve done with Risk is carry on the process that we started on our last album, Cryptic Writings. This is a very commercial record, although it’s still very heavy and very Megadeth. But what we haven’t done is go back to the early days of the band and try to recapture that thrash vibe. There’s just no point in doing something like that, because we’ve matured and developed so much since then.
"But there are couple of surprises on the record, where we’ve experimented with sounds. We’ve also included the them we’ve done for the new version of the "Duke Nukem" game. There’s also the possibility that the song "Crush ‘Em" will be included on the soundtrack for the next Jean-Claude Van Damme movie.
"Dann Huff’s a smoking guitar player in his own right and he’s helped my playing come a very long way. For someone like me to say that this guy has made me a better player, it gives you an idea of the caliber of producer we’re working with. And our new drummer, Jimmy DeGrasso, is really fantastic. Nobody’s listened to the new songs and said, "Hey, this guy sucks."

Hammer verdict:
Sounds like the ‘Deth are continuing the process of mixing their trademark melodic sensibilities and heavy approach with a ready sense of adventure. We’ll have to wait and see. Megadeth begin touring in September (just after the album’s release), when they play dozen dates in Europe supporting Iron Maiden. So far, no UK shows have been confirmed but the band should be here before the end of 1999.
