Ignition/ECU/Misc. engine electrical
*note* Do yourself a favor; don't pay someone to replace your plugs/wires/cap/rotor!! You can probably handle three measly screws on the cap! Just get yourself a manual if you're nervous. *note*
Spark plugs:
- Autolite #64 - Wal-Mart - $2? (2 pack)
- Denso iridium - Nopi - $9.25
- NGK iridium - Nopi or PepBoys - $5.64
- NGK standard - Nopi - $1.61
- Bosch platinum - AutoZone - $2
Spark plug wires (ignition wires):
*note* These are usually incorporated into the distributor cap. If you want to use separate wires, you'll need one of the specified caps listed below. *note*
- Standard 5mm (for 92-95 Paseo) - AutoZone, etc. - $40
- Magnecor 8.5mm - Options Auto Salon - $101
- MSD Heli-core 8mm universal (part# 3114) - Summit Racing - $33
- Nology?
Distributor cap:
- Wells (part# JP926) - AutoZone - $40 *note* Will not reliably stand up to Blaster SS external coil. *note*
- Beck/Arnley - AutoZone - $50 *note* Recommended for use with aftermarket ignition system. *note*
- Bosch (w/ wires) - AutoZone - $35 *note* Not for use with aftermarket ignition upgrade, but excellent otherwise. *note*
Rotor:
- Generic - AutoZone - $3.00
External coil (for use with compatible dist. cap):
Universal 4-cyl. ignition system upgrade:
- MSD 6A (part# 6200) - Summit Racing - $150
- MSD 6AL (part# 6420) - Summit Racing - $196 *note* Same as 6A, but with rev limiter. *note*
- MSD 6T (part# 6400) - Summit Racing - $176 *note* Same as 6A, but with vibration protection. Can accept external rev limiting module. *note*
- Crane
- Jacobs
Parts necessary for aftermarket ignition upgrade:
Battery:
- Optima Red/Yellow/Blue - AutoZone - $130ish
- Hawker G13EP w/ SAE terminals - SurplusEV.com - $60 *note* This is the battery I have. It weighs 11.5 lbs (compared to 35 for a standard or Optima battery). It's dry cell so you can mount it wherever/however you want. I've never had any problems starting the car, although I'd advise not to leave any interior lights on very long when the car's off. *note*
- Hawker Oddyssey line - Battery Mart - $85+ *note* Also dry cell. Very popular batteries. *note*
- Other - $40 or so
Battery relocation kit:
- Vectored Velocity Racing - $80
- Diabolique Racing - ??? *note* People have had difficulty receiving their order through dR for the past year or so. *note*
- 2-gauge battery cable kit - Summit Racing - $25 *note* For trunk mounting an Optima or Hawker battery. You don't need the complete kit because those batteries are already sealed. *note*
ECU (non-piggyback):
Top end
Headwork (port & polish, 3 angle valve job, milling):
Valves:
Valve springs:
Camshaft:
Cam gear:
Head gasket:
Bottom end
Crankshaft:
*note* The stock one is usually fine for most applications. *note*
Connecting rods:
Pistons:
- JE?
- Arias - Diabolique Racing - ??? *note* People have had difficulty receiving their order through dR for the past year or so. *note*
Cooling (including oil, but not including body mods)
Fan:
Radiator:
- CSF - Diabolique Racing - ??? *note* People have had difficulty receiving their order through dR for the past year or so. *note*
- Fluidyne?
High pressure radiator cap:
*note* Tercels and Paseos use a type N cap in case you need to know. *note*
- generic - AutoZone - ???
- GReddy - $16
Fluids:
Oil filter relocation kit:
Intake (naturally aspirated applications)
Drop-in replacement:
- Fram - Wal-Mart - $5-10??
- K&N - AutoZone - $49
Cold air intake (you might want a battery relocation kit, but it's been done beside the battery before):
Shorty intake:
Mandrel bent piping for custom intake:
- 180 deg. x 5" radius x 24" lngth x 2.5" diam. aluminized steel piping - J.C. Whitney - $24
Hose adaptors for custom intake:
- You'll probably want a 2"-3" or a 2"-2" (or both) depending on the application - Home Depot (same aisle as pvc piping) - $1-6
- Arospeed - ???
Cone style air filters:
- K&N - pretty much anywhere - $50?
- various universal filters - Nopi or your favorite online parts store - $13-60
Throttle body:
Intake manifold:
- Stage 1 (upgraded plenum) - BYP - $400
- Stage 2 (upgraded plenum, injector cups, fuel rail, throttle body) BYP - $650
- Race (full custom) - BYP - $1,100
Exhaust (naturally aspirated applications)
Header:
- E.L. Prototypes - $225 raw, $325 ceramic coated (recommended)
- Hotshot - ??? - $400?
- Custom - your local muffler shop - ??? *note* If you have a good hookup, this works well. *note*
High flow cat(alytic converter):
Cat-back system:
- Custom - your local muffler shop - $150 + muffler
Muffler:
*note* There aren't any specific to 91-94 Tercels (except maybe TRD??) so you'll have to weld on a universal muffler. Many people prefer Dynomax Ultra-Flow. Others Flowmaster. You're preference really, but I'd recommend a straight-through design. My preference is below. *note*
- Hooker maximum flow bi-directional straight-through - CarParts.com - $70
Fuel
Fuel pump:
- Granatelli Motor Sports 255lph (for Mustang) - Jegs - $134 *note* Minor modification needed. Also, 255 is way overkill. We need to find a pump thats around 80-100lph (good for around 100hp). Don't know the specs, but Paseo or 86-92 Supra pumps might work. *note*
Fuel rail:
Injectors:
*note* I don't know what capacity the stock 3E ones are, but 5E are 193cc and 7M-GE (n/a Supra) are 330cc. Both should fit, but you'll need ECU modifications for ones as big as the Supra's. *note*
Fuel pressure regulator:
Fuel management unit:
Forced induction
Turbocharger kit:
- In order to run any kind of worthwhile boost on a 3E you're either insane, stupid, have a really built engine, or have a 3E-TE already. And no you can't use a turbo manifold for a 5E 'cause it uses a different head/bolt pattern. On the other hand, it'd be cool to see a boosted 3E if you could do it reliably.
Supercharger kit:
- nobody :( Not likely anytime soon.
Nitrous oxide
Universal 4-cyl. nitrous system:
*note* If you value your 3E, you might wanna keep it down to a 35-50 shot unless you beef up the internals. *note*
Other
Underdrive pulley:
Engine transplant:
- 5E-FE, 5E-FHE, 4E-FTE *note* The H stands for "high output." *note* - BYP - $850-2000
- 4E-FTE - E. L. Prototypes - $1790-3815
- 4A-GE, 4A-GZE - BYP - $3500-5800
