Byron and Howards months and years of birth on that census are incorrect, perhaps the census taker accidentally ommited Earl's name and in the process mixed the other dates up. I will keep looking to find if Earl was somewhere else at that time for some reason." -Summer Owens

NOTES

Earl Talbert:
"Because of Earl's and Thelma's divorce, my grandmother was raised by her step dad so details on Earl and his family are sparse but here is what she has told me.
Earl's parents died when he was very young and he was raised by the Strong family. I don't know the names of the Strongs. * Information has changed, see two paragraphs below. Earl was never legally adopted by the Strong family but he used that surname all through his young life and into his marriage for a while. The first wife of the man who raised Earl, had adoption papers prepared but never got them sent in, then she died and Mr. Strong remarried. When Thelma realized he hadn't been legally adopted she asked him to use his real surname. At the time of his death Earl supposedly owned the Strong's farm in Springfield Missouri. He had also owned or worked for a piano store in Missouri and delivered and tuned pianos. I've been told he could tune a piano perfectly by ear.
Thelma left Earl when Erla was about 4. Earl had severe tuberculosis and had been accepted for an experimental surgery at a colorado hospital, where one of his lungs was removed. Thelma took the kids to California while he was away. Erla saw her father and some of his family only once after that when she was about 12. She remembers the large scar from his shoulder blade down his back where the lung was removed. On 19 June 1933 Thelma married Charles Newton Hamlin in Salt Lake City Utah, though since she had never divorced Earl, the marriage wasn't legal." -Summer Owens

Thank you SO MUCH to Bill Strong who found my query and responded with the following information.
I have found out that Earl was raised by James Sherman Strong (known as Sherman) and Martha J. Strong. After Martha died Sherman married a woman named Cuba. Earl operated a piano store in Independence Missouri from 1962 to 1972.

"Earl's first marriage was to Katharine Bentley Boswell. He left Katharine within a couple years of being married. They had one daughter together. Katharine re-married and their child was adopted by her step-father Edward Lee Comer. She was known as child Comer. In a written account by Edward Comer, he says child Talbert was 16 to 18 months old when he married her mother Katharine. Information about child of Katharine and Earl and the Comer family graciously given by Rowan Fairgrove." -Summer Owens
