Stapleton born about 1772 in Baltimore Maryland. Died 21 September 1845 in Logansport, Cass Co., Indiana.

iii. James Ammon Lewis born 6 February 1838 in Ray, Cass Co., Missouri. Died 28 April 1840 in Ray, Cass Co., Missouri.
iv. Francis Marion Lewis born 30 March 1841 in Carrol, Indiana. Died 27 May 1843 in Carrol, Indiana.
v. Isaac Morley Lewis born 15 October 1844 in Nauvoo, Hancock Co., Illinois. Died 24 March 1875 in Deweyville, Box Elder Co., Utah in a snowslide. Body discovered after 6 weeks, buried by his mother.

1. Period of Birth and Growth, Independence and Honor. a. Born in an Eventual Year of American History - 1776 b. Buys a farm when 14 years of age - 1790 c. Serves as one of an escort to the President of the U.S., Gen. George Washington, 1791.
2. Period of Adventure, marriage and migration. a. Enlists in the American Legion to serve under Gen. Anthony Wayne in his campaign against the Miami Indiance Confederacy, 1794. Served at the battle of Fallen Timbers in OH. b. Marries Rachel Stapleton - 1795. c. Migrates to the Ohio country - 1806.
3. Period of the War of 1812, a second migration and death. a. Serves with the First Ohio Militia, 1812-1813. Servec under Capt. John Clark's company, Greene Co., OH b. Migrates to Indiana, settling in the Pioneer County of Cassia. c. Dies at Logansport, IN, burired Jan. 23, 1839 in the Ninth Street Cemetery, Logansport, IN. Formerly the grave was indicated by a marker.

History of Joel Lewis Sr.

Joseph Lewis's only son, Joel, was born 1 Feb 1776 in Rowan Co., NC. Living near Belbrook, OH, thence to Cash Co., IN, near Logansport where he died 20 Jan 1840. He served in the War of 1812 with Gen. Anthony, building forts across the state of OH and IN. He was also in the State Militia. Capt. John Clark's Company, 18 Oct to 20 Nov 1812 and 10 Aug to 5 Sep 1813. Later he was a great hunter and carried the U.S. Mail through the Indian country. Pony Express. He married in 1796 Rachel Stapleton, born in Maryland, 1 of 4 sisters from maryland, who were left orphans at an early age. Of their 7 children (E.V.L. omitted Richard), Joel, Jr., born Bellbrook, OH, 8 Sep 1806, married 13 Oct 1825, to Mercy Fallis of Greene Co., OH. He was also a famous hunter having, it is said, a particular gun for each kind of game; They had 11 children. Lewisiana has names and also records of the descendants of the youngest, Andrew K., born Randolph Co., IN 14 Jan 1846, died 8 Sep 1916, Westchester, IN.

James Stapleton Lewis born 22 Feb 1814 in Greene Co., OH was a farmer at Albion, ID; married 10 May 1833, Anna Jones, dau. of Rev. Jones, the pioneer of Kentucky and also with Gen. Fielding Lewis, who married Washington's sister, Betty. That Merriweather Lewis, the explorer, James Hamilton Lewis, were near relatives of his father.
