This is a very strange poem . . . I dont' know what came over me . . .
I was walking through the woods one day,
Where the water runs pure and clear,
The spirits as often were chattering merrily,
But strangely today could be heard by human ear.
My footsteps slowed and so I sat,
Next to the sparkling stream,
And by and by my eyelids grew heavy,
I do not know whether this was reality or dream.
A beautiful voice, as sweet as honey,
Whispered to the others,
‘Two morrows prior a quite sad event occurred,
The separation of two lovers.’
At this sound a second and third spirit,
Whose voices were sad and low,
Whispered back with trembling,
‘A fair young maiden arrived at our doors this morrow,’
And this confession made,
The other spirits began to chitter chat,
When finally one soothed their throat,
And spoke for all the rest.
‘Two days prior a handsome young fellow,
Arrived at all our doors,
And after being our guest for a bit,
Refused to leave but stayed some more.
The spirits quieted and I awoke,
From this strange event,
But in my head the voices lingered,
‘Til they hardened permanent.
And as I walked through the woods,
My ears began to ring,
The identity of these spirits’ names,
A plain new sound did sing.
The premier voice was that of,
The fair spirit love,
The second were death and sorrow,
Who gives tears and depress of such.
The latter chorus was of silly things,
Like greed and money and lust,
So let this be a lesson my friends,
And learn the nemesis of a love.
