OMBUDSMAN

He is supposed to "take the pulse" of the community for the paper.
He is there to listen to what the readership believes is good or bad about the paper.
You always want to contact him (or give him a "carbon" or "cc") but just don't stop there.
Don't be shy about going all the way to the top!
Some papers have a "Readers' Adviser. Similar.

Note: Some of these Jobs Overlap. Every Paper is different. Some have a Managining Editor but not a News Editor. Most have both though.

WARNINGS

A few papers publish an entirely different on line editon that has nothing to do with their printed edition. There may be useful information there about the printed edition, though.

Many papers allow for a true "Letters to the Editor" (for the printed edition) in their on-line edtion, but they also have a readers "letters" section for the on line edition as well, "letters" to their online "readers letters" will never go to the printed Letters column.

A few papers invite "email letters" in their printed and on-line edition for special sections or reader opinion sections, again, these are not true "letters to the editor"for publication there.

In short, read the fine print, make sure your letter goes to the right place. Letters to the Editor in the printed edition get seen by more people and have a greater influence on readers and staff. Letters to the on line edition, get seen by far less people but can be read anywhere in the world.
