Harper's Ferry & South Mountain Battle Tour

Saturday April 14th, 2001

WITH ST. PETER'S church in the background and against a beautiful blue sky, Dianne held Kelly on the 1st leg of the trip. Earlier we had made the ascent to the church and examined the interior. The statue of Christ as he appeared in the Shroud of Turin was magnificent.

WHERE THE CIVIL WAR truly began, the dog and Guy posed before the firehouse where John Brown and 21 of his followers holed up when their raid on Harpers Ferry turned bad.

A VIEW FROM AFAR shows South Mountain in the background with the town of Middleton in between. On the 14th of September, 1862, 100,000 yankees advanced towards that mountain to drive out Robert E. Lee and his rebs. They were successful but failed to win a decisive victory, thus causing the bloodiest day in Civil War history at the Battle of Antietam 72 hours later.

IN FRONT OF THE massive arch built in honor of all war correspondants during the war, this plaque overlooks the approach of the yankees towards the confederate lines on Crampton's Gap. 100+ New Jersey soldiers lost their lives pushing up the hill in front. The rebs from Georgia who defended this height lost even more.

IN A MOST strange location, this buffalo herd was on the descending slope of South Mountain.
