Simply Irresistable
AJ stood in front of the door to Delia’s building contemplating how he should go about telling her all that had gone on in down in the Bahamas. When he returned to his and Michelle’s hotel room, he had smoothed things over with Nick and offered to leave early so that they could spend some more time together. Now he was free to pursue Delia, and all of a sudden, he didn’t know exactly how approach the situation.
He felt nervous, he couldn’t stand still in one place, nor could he sit on the stoop to gather his thoughts. Instead he paced, back and forth, up and down the steps. Sometimes he glanced up at her window, on the top floor, checking to see if her light was still on. It was. She had dark blue curtains, and the soft summer night breeze gently carried the sheer curtains in the wind and made them dance. When they opened slightly, he swore he could hear her inside humming, as she always did. She worked on her sketches by that window, and he knew that she was just a few feet above his head, drawing beautiful designs with vibrant colors.
He reached into his pockets and felt a stray piece of paper brush across his right hand. He pulled it out and unfolded it, not remembering where it came from or when he put it in his pocket in the first place.
Inside of the folded piece of paper was a picture of Michelle and AJ, their arms around each other, both of their heads resting against the other’s. It was a friendly picture, one of the first she had taken of them with her camera. He read the note on the paper with a smile on his face.
“I know you, Chez. And you won’t get this until you’re in New York! I also know that you’ll get it BEFORE you’ve talked to Delia. Just know that I’m wishing the best of luck for you and Delia. Not stand your ground and go get your girl! All my love.... Shell” AJ chuckled and folded the note back up with the photo tucked safely inside it. He secured it back into his pocket and proceeded to go up to Delia’s apartment door.
Delia was just putting the finishing touches on her latest summer creation when she heard a light knock on the door. She put her blue pencil down lightly and got up from her desk to go answer the door. She had ordered some Thai food not too long ago, and she expected for it to be the delivery boy.
She took her money from her purse near the front door and counted out $8.14 plus $3.00 for tip. She opened the door, money in hand, only to be shocked. AJ looked up from the floor and smiled faintly. She folded the money up and put it on the ledge near the door without taking her gaze away from him.
“Alex...” She sighed, almost breathless. Not expecting to ever see him again. He took his glasses off and his hat, and he stood up straight.
“I didn’t think you’d ever... I mean, I never thought you’d come back.” She stammered. AJ just shrugged.
“Never say never.” Was his simple reply. They stood in the doorway for only a moment before she stepped aside and AJ entered the room. She shut the door behind him and then turned to face him. She walked a few feet toward him and admired him as though he was previously a figment of her deepest fantasy, finally come to life to fill the void in her world. She placed her soft palm on his cheek and their lips met briefly. And as they greeted each other with such a gentle kiss, Delia suddenly remembered how AJ was involved and how wrong it was to give into him considering the fact that he was taken.
She pulled away and went over to the window, looking out onto the city and the people making their way home below, on the street. AJ came up behind her and placed his warm hands on her bare shoulders, moving them down her arms, and back again.
“What’s wrong?” He whispered. Delia didn’t bother to turn back around. She only stood still and lowered her eyes to see his arms slowly wrapping around her stomach, pulling her close in a much-anticipated embrace.
“You’re with Michelle. You shouldn’t be here with me. Not like this.” She explained, speaking barely above a whisper as not to reveal to AJ the pain within. She wanted to be back with AJ so much that it hurt her inside. And seeing him again, sharing kisses, feeling his soft touch... it was like a sweet torture.
“But I’m not. We broke things off. She still had suppressed feelings for Nick, which I respect. And I... well, when I saw you that day I fell in love with you all over again. When we were together years ago, you were all I ever wanted out of life. You were all I needed. Waking up knowing that I shared my life with you filled my heart with so much happiness that I could hardly stand it. You made my life make sense back then. And, frankly, I believe that we can start right where we left off. And this time, it will be far better than it ever was.” The enthusiasm in his voice sparked hope within Delia. She turned slowly and looked up at him.
“You mean that?” AJ brought her close to him and rested his chin on her forehead. And he knew that Nick and Michelle were probably doing the same, making right what had once been wrong. Filling the long empty spaces. Finding solace in the presents of each other. He was happy that things worked out the way they did.
~*~*~*~*~*~
Michelle and Nick walked along the beach, hand in hand, enjoying the feeling of the waves crashing against their bare feet. The sun was setting and it was so much more beautiful than any other sunset they’d witness. They both stopped and faced it, holding it other steady against the oncoming waves.
“You know, I often wonder why you two fought over me in the first place. I could see if I was someone spectacularly beautiful or captivating. But I’m just me... the same way I’ve always been. Why the rivalry?” Nick hadn’t really ever thought about why he felt so extremely angry over Michelle’s relationship with AJ. Then it hit him.
“It’s your smile, and your laugh. To make you like is like a lifetime achievement. It’s your ambition, and your drive. I’ve never met a woman so dedicated to making the most of life. And, you just have this positive energy surrounding you. Even when you’re depressed, you’re optimistic. Maybe we both craved that. I know for certain that I need that in my life. I need you in my life. Just face it, Shell..... you’re simply irresistible.”
The End.
