The Call
“Please tell me that you’re kidding. You cannot be breaking up with me!” Nick screamed into the phone. Anger was building up inside of him and he fought the urge to hang up on her.
“I’m sorry. I don’t want you to be mad at me. I’m just not happy with you. We get along better as friends rather then the way we are.” Michelle explained. Sobbing cut her statement short.
“Why didn’t you say something earlier? Why did you have to wait until I fell in love with you to tell me you weren’t happy with me? I thought we could be honest with each other, Shell.” Nick got quiet.
“I’m sorry for not telling you sooner. I’m sorry for waiting until you told me that you loved me to tell you that I don’t share the same feelings. And I’m sorry for lying to you. But Nick, it’s over now. I can only hope that we’ll remain friends. But that’s entirely up to you.” Michelle said, still sobbing on the other line.
“You know how deeply I feel about you. We’ve only known each other for 6 months, and already you’re the one person I could see myself spending forever with. Now put yourself in my shoes. I’m giving my heart to you and you tell me that you don’t love me and never really have. How am I suppose to feel now, Michelle?” Nick’s voice was weakening now.
“You’re right. I fucked up. I did you wrong. And I honestly feel bad about this, Nicky.” She confessed. Nick scoffed.
“Yeah, not as bad as I feel. And as for staying friends, don’t count on it. I need as much time away from you as I can get!” He hung the phone up and sighed. And it wasn’t long before he went out for a drive to relieve his thoughts.
Michelle knew he would go out driving. So she called his house again.
“Nick, I truly am sorry for hurting you. You may not believe me now, but I am. And I hope we can remain close after all of this cools down. We did start off as really good friends remember? We can have that again. We really could. I’m gonna go, you know where I am if you ever wanna talk to me again. Goodbye.” Michelle hung up the phone and that ended the message she left on his answering machine. Then she read over Nick’s first love letter to her, crying, hating herself for chickening out of a good reltionship with a man who loved her dearly.
