We finally have confirmed a location for Pow Wow. It will be held at the Stone Ridge School, a private girls' school in Bethesda that is diagonally across Rockville Pike from the Marriott Scout Service Center. If people can find their way to Council, they'll be able to find their way to Pow Wow!

I've attached the latest version of the Pow Wow flyer which has the location information. Please note -- it also has one additional class that was inadvertently left off the original flyer: Course #3-8, Cub Scout Magic. Please mention this to folks when you send them the new flyer.

Please distribute this flyer to anyone and everyone you know who is interested in attending Pow Wow. The Steering Committee is working hard to have a great event this year and we're trying to reach 1,000 participants! We can certainly use your help to make this happen!

Come and join 1,000 fellow Cub Scout Leaders to learn new ideas for crafts, advancement activities, games, songs, program administration and much, much more!! All classes are taught by experienced Cub Scouters with an average of 5 years as leaders and/or trainers in the Cub Scouting program.

Pow Wow is open to all Cub Scout Leaders — Tiger, Wolf, Bear and Webelos Den Leaders; Pack Committee Members and Chairmen; Pack Trainers (new position); Den Leader Coaches; Assistant Leaders at all levels; Chartered Organization Representatives; Unit Commissioners and interested parents — and all adults associated with your Pack are encouraged to show up!!

All participants will attend six classes (from those listed) and receive lunch and a copy of this year’s Pow Wow book filled with ideas for the coming year. Best of all, they’ll have the opportunity to network with other leaders from around the Council and the Northeast Region!

How to register:

1. Fill out the registration form at the end of this flyer. Be sure to include 12 choices for classes (in order of preference), but remember that you’ll only be taking 6 of them.
2. Indicate whether you want your Pow Wow book in a printed or digital form (there’s a $5 additional charge for CD-ROM). Also indicate if you want any additional copies of the book or CD-ROM and if you wish to order a commemorative mug.
3. Total your order, write a check or money order payable to BSA-NCAC and take it (or mail it) along with your registration form to: National Capital Area Council, Program Office, 9190 Rockville Pike, Bethesda, Maryland 20814.

New Leader Focus A: Tiger to Webelos "Into the Great Unknown"

1-1	Tiger Den Leaders and Tiger Den Activities	Learn about the new role of the Tiger Den in the Pack and get some new ideas for Tiger Den activities.
1-2	Tigers and Crafts	We’ll show you some simple arts and crafts ideas that you can tie into the Tiger Cub program.
1-3	Den Leader Basics —  Planning the Den Program	Don’t be overwhelmed by it all! We’ll teach you how to plan your Den program, one step at a time!
1-4	Family Involvement and  Delegation in the Den	"Whose job is it, anyway?" A common question for parents who are new to the Cub Scouting program. Here are the answers you’re looking for!
1-5	Using Monthly Themes	Keep It Simple, Make It Fun! Use the BSA monthly themes in your Den programs for crafts, games and lots of other activities.
1-6	Webelos Technology Focus	Lots of ideas on how to incorporate the Technology Activity Badges into your weekly Webelos program.
1-7	Webelos Academic Focus	Lots of ideas on how to incorporate the Mental Skills and Community Activity Badges into your weekly Webelos program.

1-10	Advancement Basics —  Beltloops and Baubles	All of the boys love to wear their awards and show them off, but exactly what do they have to do to get them? How and when are they recognized? What other awards can they earn?
1-11	Youth Protection NOTE: requires 2 sessions	A requirement for Quality Unit! This is the full, 90-minutes version — more than you receive in Basic training.
New Leader Focus B:   Cubmasters, Committee Chairmen and Members, Pack Trainers "Building the Foundations"

2-1	Who’s Who and What’s What? The Lingo of Scouting	Webelos? BALOO?? COR??? Some of these Scouting terms are very strange! Join us in this class and find out what they mean.
2-2	Cub Scouts 101 — Basic Communication Tools and Resources	Communication with your Scouts, parents and other leaders is critical to a successful program. We’ll show you some tools and techniques — from newsletters to e-mail — to make it work.
2-3	Program Planning Resources and Implementation	Is your Pack in a "program rut"? Need some new ideas to make things better? We’ll show you where to go for information and how to use it!
2-4	Pack/Troop Interaction	Want to spark interest in your Cubs and Webelos so they’ll want to go on and become Boy Scouts? Working closely with your Troop to plan and carry out joint activities with the Pack will help do the trick!
2-5	Leader Transitions…..or Recruiting Your Replacement	Eventually, every leader moves on….to Boy Scouting or retirement. What can you do to "backfill" your position?
2-6	Basic First Aid and Safety Requirements for Packs & Dens NOTE: requires 2 sessions	Make sure that all of your Scouting activities are safe? We’ll include some basic first aid techniques, go over A Guide to Safe Scouting, and talk about safe food handling. This is vital information that every leader should know!
2-7	BSA Policies and Enforcement	As with any organization, there are specific policies and procedures that must be followed. Get a better "handle" on what they are and how to enforce them in your Pack.
2-8	Marketing Your Program	How do you promote Boy Scouting in general and the Cub Scout program in particular? How should you deal with the public on controversial issues? What’s the best way possible to represent the Boy Scouts of America? Join this class and get the answers!
2-9	Discipline in the Pack/Working with Scouts with ADD/ADHD	What are some techniques for dealing with discipline in the Pack? What do you do about the disruptive boys or the ones with special needs for attention and control? This session is taught by a member of the NCAC Scouting Unlimited Committee.
2-10	Pack Trainer Development NOTE: Requires 6 sessions	Learn about the BRAND NEW position of Pack Trainer! How can this person be an asset to your Pack? What exactly does the Pack Trainer do? (This class was formerly the Den Leader Coach Seminar.)
2-11	Budget Planning and Fund Raising	Like it or not, the budget is a vital part of your Pack Planning process. We’ll go over how to plan for and finance your activities and the "what, where and how to" of fund raising for your Pack.

3-2	Little Knives & Little Hands — Earning the Whittlin’ Chip	Teach your boys the correct — and SAFE — way to use a pocket knife while you find out how they can earn this award.
3-3	Basic Arts and Crafts	Are you craft-challenged? Then this class is for you! We’ll cover projects for beginners that you can share with your boys.
3-4	Leatherwork	Master the basics on preparing, tooling, punching and dying leather. Get ideas for leathercrafts to make with your Scouts.
3-5	Neckerchief Creations	Creating unique neckerchief slides is a great way for your den to show off their skills and tie activities into your program.
3-7	Mad Science	Here’s a way to make science more interesting for young boys. We’ll show you exciting, but safe, experiments you can do with them that will really impress them!
3-8	Cub Scout Magic	Learn some simple tricks to teach your boys that will amaze and dazzle them!

3-11	Learning, Teaching and Having Fun with Knots	Don’t be afraid when someone hands you that piece of rope! Tying knots is easier than you think — and fun, too!

4-3	Packs & Family Partnerships —  Fostering Involvement	Cub Scouting is a family program, but sometimes it’s hard to know how to get the families involved. We’ll share ideas on how to get more families to take an active role in your Pack.
4-4	How to Run a Derby — Space, Pinewood and/ Raingutter Regattas	Running any kind of derby takes a lot of planning and hard work. Let us show you how to do it easier and have it run smoother!
4-5	Family-Oriented Scouting: the BSA Family Program	Did you know that there’s an actual program designed to help strengthen family relationships through Scouting? Come to this class and learn all about this outstanding program.
4-6	Revitalizing Your Pack	Sometimes a Pack needs someone to come along and breathe a little life back into it. Find out what you can do to get your Pack back on the right track.
4-7	Leader Burnout — Recognition, Avoidance & Corrective Action Plans	Even the best leaders sometimes get burned out. Learn how to recognize the signs and re-motivate them.
4-8	Community Outreach and Service	Help develop good character by teaching your boys to serve their communities. We’ll give you lots of ideas on how to "reach out".
4-9	Flag Etiquette and Ceremonies	Respect for the flag is one of the most important aspects of good citizenship. Learn the proper way to take care of Old Glory, as well as new ways to present the colors at your meetings or other events.
4-10	Bridging and Graduation Ceremonies	Make your Scouts feel special about how far they’ve come and look forward to where they’re going with these exciting ceremonies.

5-2	Safety Afloat/Safe Swim Defense NOTE: requires 2 sessions	Your Pack or Den must have at least one adult trained in the aquatic safety program in order to do any water activities. Here’s your chance to become properly certified.
5-3	Webelos Camping and Planning for Summer Residence Camps	Do you know how to take your Webelos on an overnight campout or what’s involved with preparing to go to Goshen? We’ll take the mystery out of your planning and preparation.
5-4	Family Camping for Younger Scouts: BALOO — Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation NOTE: requires 2 sessions	This training is for the all new BSA program for camping with Wolves and Bears. You’ll leave this class rarin’ to go and with your certification in the BALOO program. Help keep the OUTING in ScOUTING!
5-5	Nature Discovery Activities	It’s a wonderful world out there….learn the skills and knowledge you need to share it with your boys.
5-6	Campfires and Nighttime Discover Activities	Learn ho to plan an effective and fun campfire program. Get new ideas for other nighttime activities for your outings.
5-7	Let’s Go Build Something	There are many companies and organizations in the area that will help teach your Scouts basic skills in building, including the safe use of tools. We’ll show you where to go and how to arrange a visit with your neighborhood business.
5-8	Native American Lore	This program will teach you some of the legends, beliefs, and stories of the first Americans and how to tie them into the Cub Scout program.
