Chapter 14

After I finished up with Dylan, Josh and I headed back to the hotel we were staying at. We didn't say anything to each other until we reached the room.

"Is something wrong, Sandra?"

"No, I don't know."

"Oh."

Josh and Dylan sat on a bed and I sat across from them on the other one.

"You wanna talk about it?"

"Not now."

"Okay."

Josh began playing with Dylan; I stared blankly at the wall. I needed to tell him, but I didn't want to do it tonight. The feeling between us became weird, and I could tell our relationship was on the rocks and tension had filled the room once again.

I watched him play with Dylan and lay back on the bed, drifting off to sleep.

******

I watched Sandra, she was sleeping.

There was something weird about her, but I couldn't figure out what it was.

Dylan fell asleep and I put him in his crib, then I climbed under the covers. I stared up at the ceiling for a few moments, then fell asleep.

******

I awoke the next morning, fully clothed. Josh had more press to do today; I had something else I needed to do. I pulled myself off the bed and headed to the bathroom to shower. I came back moments later to find Josh sitting up watching TV.

"Hi."

"Hey."

He rubbed the sleep out of his eyes.

"I'm gonna go take a shower."

"Okay."

I watched him walk into the bathroom; I sat down on the bed.

Today was the day to do it; it was now or never.

He came back moments later, sitting next to me. Tension came between us again as he kissed me. He quickly pulled away, moving to the other bed.

"Josh, we need to talk." I turned to face him.

"Yeah, we do."

"This isn't working for me."

"Me either."

"I don't think I can handle being so close to you all the time. I guess this is why they say never date a co-worker or a boss."

"Yeah, I guess so."

"Is it just me, or does it always seem that we have tension between us?"

"It's not just you, trust me. I just didn't want to say anything to you because I didn't know if you felt the same way and I didn't want to hurt you again."

"Yeah, I figured as much."

"So, is this it then?"

"I guess so. I guess it just wasn't meant to be for us."

"Yeah, exactly."

Silence fell over us for a few minutes. Josh glanced at me, then at Dylan.

"I'll still be a good father to him, don't worry."

"I wasn't. I know you will be."

"I promise I'll visit him whenever I can."

"I know you will."

"Good."

"I'm just glad that I got a chance to reconnect with you and we can end being just friends."

"Yeah, we can. Now you can go date Brian."

"Huh? Why?"

"He told me the story, so I know."

"Oh, okay."

"So you gonna leave today?"

"Yeah probably, if that's okay."

"It's fine, I don't control your life."

"Thanks, I'm gonna have to quit now."

"Don't bother telling her, I'll tell her for ya."

"Thanks Josh. You're a great guy."

He smiled and then dialed up the airport to get me a plane ticket home.

"Your flight leaves in two hours."

"You didn't have to do that."

"It's okay, I wanted to."

"Thanks. I guess I should get everything ready then, will you help with Dylan?"

"Yeah sure."
