Fear Of Heights

“Let’s go out and do something,” Denise pouted as she sat down on the floor in front of Joey. “Shelle, you used to live here, what can we do?”

“We could go to the CN Tower.” Michelle suggested. “But you and Chris are scared of heights.”

“Hey, I’m not as scared as I used to be. I’m usually fine inside an enclosed space. Not like those damn elevators we use in the show.”

“Well I’m up for it.” Joey said and turned to look at Denise. “I’ll protect you Dee.”

Denise glared at Michelle before speaking. “Since I’m outnumbered three to one, I guess I don’t have much of a choice.”

“Come on Dee, it will be fun.” Joey laughed and pulled her up off the floor. The four of them got their coats on and looked down the hallway.

“The coast is clear.” Chris whispered. “Let’s go.”

Michelle drove the rental car downtown Toronto and parked it across the road from the CN Tower. Chris was the first out of the car and waited patiently for the rest of them to exit the vehicle. When they looked up at the building, Denise swayed a little and Joey wrapped his arms around her to steady her. Michelle looked at her with concern.

“Dee, you look kind of pale. We don’t have to do this if you don’t want to.”

“I – I’ll be fine.” She stuttered and hid her face in Joey’s chest.

Michelle looked over at Chris who just shrugged and extended his arm to take her hand in his. They crossed the road in silence and walked through the doors at the base of the tower.

They paid their way in and headed to the elevators that would take them to the top. Denise took a deep breath and grabbed Joey’s arm as they stepped in. The doors closed and as the elevator started to ascend, Denise covered her eyes and buried her head in Joey’s chest. Chris was apprehensively peeking over Michelle’s shoulder to look out the window and Michelle glanced over at Joey.

“Next time we leave these two at home.” She said and Joey laughed.

“Hey, I’m doing just fine!” Chris protested, his voice muffled.

“Is that why your face is buried in my neck?” Michelle asked, still laughing.

“I just like the way you smell,” he told her and wrapped his arms around her waist.

“Uh-huh,” she said and rolled her eyes at Joey.

The elevator stopped at the top of the tower and the four of them stepped out. Denise finally raised her head from Joey’s chest and looked around.

“This isn’t too bad,” she noted.

“Wait until we get outside.” Michelle grinned.

“O-Outside? This high? Joey, tell me she’s kidding.” Denise’s eyes went wide with fear.

“She isn’t kidding, Dee.” Joey shook his head. “Look at the people out there.”

“It’s screened in, there’s no way you can fall.”

“You guys are just waiting to kill me.” Denise frowned. “All right, I’ll go, but Joey, you’re holding on to me and you’re not going to let me go.”

“Fine by me,” he grinned.

Chris had a very tight hold of Michelle’s waist as they walked outside, making her believe that he was more nervous than he led on. She placed her hands on top of his and turned her head to smile at him.

“You’ll be ok,” she whispered.

“It’s really windy up here,” Joey said loudly so he could be heard.

“It’s damn cold too,” Denise scowled. “I don’t know why I let you guys talk me into this.”

“Because you were bored and wanted to do something.”

“I’m not bored anymore. Let’s head back.”

“Fine.” Michelle replied.

Once they were outside again, they crossed the road to the rental car and Michelle unlocked the doors. Chris and Denise walked around to the passenger side and when Denise stepped onto the curb, she lost her balance and fell into the huge snowbank that was beside the car. Chris started to laugh and Michelle gave him a dirty look.

“Christopher, did you push her?”

“I swear, I’m innocent this time!” He exclaimed, still laughing.

Joey walked around to help Denise out of the snow and when he bent over to take her arms, Chris pushed him down. Michelle closed her eyes and bit her lip to keep from laughing.

“Get in the car before you cause any more trouble Chris.” She told him, her eyes dancing with laughter.

“Yes dear,” he answered meekly, the expression in his eyes, matching hers.

“Joey and Denise, you two need to get up before the press sees you in that position.”

“She sounds more and more like JC everyday,” Joey murmured in Denise’s ear before he helped her up. Denise just laughed and got into the car.
