Lance was in the waiting area when he saw his family walking in.
“I’m so glad you guys are here.” Lance said hugging his mom.
“How is she?” Stacy asked.
“It’s not good. I have a feeling that the doctors know what’s wrong but they won’t tell me. I think it’s because I’m not a relative.” Lance said.
“Didn’t you tell them that she is the closest family she’s got right now and she needs you?” Stacy asked.
“I’ve tried everything. They’re trying to contact her aunt, but she’s all they way in Connecticut and I don’t think that…” Lance said but couldn’t finish because he was too emotional.
“Come on Lance. You have to be strong. At least for Victoria’s sake. She needs now.” Madison said comforting him.
“Is Lance Bass around?” A nurse asked coming out of Victoria’s room.
“That’s me.” Lance said standing up quickly.
“Come with me.” The nurse said and Lance followed. Victoria was hooked up to so many machines it was unbelievable. Lance couldn’t bear to see the woman he loved fighting for her life in such conditions.
“How is she?” Lance asked with his voice breaking.
“I am surprised she has lasted this long with her disease.” The nurse said.
“Disease?” Lance asked.
“Yes, disease. I thought you knew Mr. Bass.” The nurse said.
“Knew what? What aren’t you telling me?” Lance asked raising his voice at her.
“Ms. Monroe has Cancer, Mr. Bass. She’s had it ever since she was a child. I’m sure she mentioned this to you.” The nurse said. Lance had tears streaming down his face at this point. Not only was the woman he loved dieing of an incurable disease, but he the same woman lied to him throughout their whole relationship.
“No, she didn’t.” Lance said clearing his through. He then realized this was the reason that Victoria asked him that out-of-the-blue question if he would ever date a girl with a disease.
“You can stay a few minutes. But please be very quiet and don’t touch her. Anything could set her emotions into over drive.” The nurse said. Lance sat beside her and just cried. He had no idea what to do for her. His love was dying right before him and he couldn’t even reach out his hand to help her. Even the nurse strongly advised no contact with Victoria, Lance put her hand in his. It felt so cold.
“Mr. Bass. Visiting hours are over.” The nurse reminded him. Lance put gently kissed Victoria’s head before he left.
“How is she?” Madison asked.
“She has… Cancer.” Lance said still not believing it himself. The whole family was devastated. How could someone like Victoria be stricken with such a horrible disease and not being able to fully experience what God had given when she was bought into the world by two loving parents.
“Can anything be done?” Diane asked comforting her son.
“No.” Lance said starring straight into thin air.
“Mr. Bass. Come here please.” The nurse said with a little smile.
“Yes.” Lance asked fearing the worst.
“She is asking for you.” The nurse smiled wide. Lance ran into Victoria’s room and she was indeed awake. Her eyes were only half open, but just looking into those beautiful blue eyes made Lance’s world perfect.
“Hey sweetie.” Lance said rubbing her face.
“I want to tell you something.” Victoria said. Lance leaned in close since Victoria could really only speak softly.
“I Love You.” She said. Lance held her hand and looked into her eyes. Victoria closed her eyes. Thinking that she was asleep, Lance let go of her hands and the monitor went on a steady beep. Meaning her heart had stop pumping blood through her veins. The doctors and nurses soon came and pushed Lance to the side. Working as hard as they could and pumping oxygen into Victoria’s lungs, nothing was working. Victoria had died. Lance walked out of the room towards his family having high hopes for Victoria. Diane walked up to her son and gave him a big hug.
All Lance could bare to say was “She’s Gone.”
He was breathless.
