That afternoon when Lance came home from his classes, Victoria was sitting in the middle of the bed with a serious face.
“What’s wrong?” Lance asked confused.
“Lance, I have to tell you something.” Victoria said seriously.
“Okay.” Lance said sitting beside her.
“Hey party people, what’s up?” Brooke said coming into the room.
“Hey Brooke.” Victoria said. She was kind of glad that Brooke was there, and then she was off the hold. But Victoria really wanted and knows she needs to tell Lance her big secret before it’s too late.
“Brooke, you know I like your company and all. But Victoria and I were just about to have a serious conversation.” Lance said. Victoria’s stomach was churning and when Lance mentioned serious conversation, it worsened.
“Are you okay Victoria?” Brooke asked.
“Yeah, I’m okay.” Victoria said. Brooke knew all about Victoria and knew that Lance had no idea what was about to happen.
“Oh, okay. Well I’ll catch you two people later. See ya!” Brooke said running out of the room.
“What is you wanted to tell me?” Lance asked. There was so much love and devotion in his eyes. How could Victoria tell him something that she knew was going to hurt him so much? Lance was so innocent that he should be lied to. Betrayal was something that Lance couldn’t accept nor forgive. How could Victoria bare to tell him? He loved her so much and yet he would be so hurt by knowing what was kept from him for so long.
“I needed to tell you that, um one of your friends stopped by here today and they said they would be back later.” Victoria said making it up as she went along.
“Really? Which one?” Lance asked. He had a feeling that something was up, but knew in his heart that his girlfriend, hopefully soon-to-be fiancée, would never lie to him.
“I never got his name. He looked kind of like Paul, but it wasn’t Paul.” Victoria said.
“Victoria is there is something you’re keeping from me. You know I hate to be lied to.” Lance said.
“Why would I ever keep anything from you?” Victoria asked him.
“Why should I have been so thoughtless?” Lance said shaking his worry off. When Lance gave Victoria a hug, she felt so guilty. The first guy in a long time that she really cared about and really cared about her was being betrayed.
“How were your classes today?” Victoria asked.
“Usual. You would think that when you’re a junior in college that you study your major and classes would seem very interesting. Yeah, right! I can’t be any more bored then I was my first day at this school.” Lance said.
“Maybe you need to be challenged more. What level of classes are you in?” Victoria asked.
“Second level I think. The other level above me is like advanced. I never had advanced in school, ever. I don’t think I could handle it now.” Lance said.
“You can do anything you put your mind to. All you have to do is believe.” Victoria said.
Later on that night, Victoria was lying in bed with Lance thinking about how much she was betraying him. Every second that goes by is going to hurt him more and more when Lance finds out.
“Lance.” Victoria asked him.
“Hmm?” Lance asked her.
“This is just a hypothetical question. Would you ever date a girl who had a disease?” Victoria asked.
“Where is this coming from?” Lance asked facing her.
“I just want to know. I was reading this book in the library and it was about this guy who was dating this girl with diabetes. I never got to finish the book. But I was just wondering if you would ever date a girl like that.” Victoria asked again.
“I really never thought about it Victoria. But I guess I would have think about what kind of situation I’m in and go from there. Are you in some kind of trouble? You’ve been acting weird around me ever since we got back from my parents house.” Lance said thinking she had a problem with his family even though she said millions of times that she had a wonderful visit and couldn’t wait to go back for Christmas break.
“As I said before, no. I was just thinking about it.” Victoria asked closing her eyes. That night she dreamt about her graduation day. Even though Victoria never really spent a long period of time with her mother, she had a vision of what her mother might had looked like at that moment. Victoria had felt so safe in her dream. She turned around and Lance stood before her. Instead of a look of disappointment, Lance had a look of confusion. Kind of like Lance was questioning why he was even there. Victoria turned around and her mother was gone. Turing back to Lance and he was gone. Victoria had nothing. A moment later, Victoria woke up in sweating and shaking all over. Why were her dreams haunting her? Victoria suddenly lost control of her breathing and couldn’t catch her breath.
“Are you okay?” Lance as sitting up suddenly. Victoria quickly shook her head no while trying to catch her breath. Lance then urged her to go to the hospital. However, Victoria flat out refused. She didn’t want to be around doctors that didn’t know her. She wanted to be around people who knew her and wanted to care for her. After and hour of Victoria still trying to catch her breath, Lance took her to the hospital against her wishes. Hours later, she was released and given some medication to clear her lungs.
