That next morning Victoria was rudely awaken by Brooke’s blow dryer.
“Some people like to sleep you know.” Victoria said.
“If you slept any long you would miss your class.” Brooke said.
“Why did you let me sleep so late then?” Victoria asked her getting out of bed.
“You usually wake up by yourself and I thought you might be awake any time now. I guess it’s a good thing that I use this blow dryer, isn’t it. Otherwise you would be snoozing right through English.” Brooke said with a laugh. “What should I wear?” Brooke asked herself looking at her closet. Her closet at home was practically the size of her dorm room. So slimming down to these new standards was rough on her wardrobe.
“Wear that nice blue outfit you showed me yesterday.” Brooke suggested. Victoria nodded and pulled out the light blue outfit that Brooke had mentioned. Victoria had just finished getting ready and realized she was ten minutes behind her usual time when she left for class. Victoria rushed out the door and quickly walked to her class. When she got there, all the seats near the front were taken. Victoria usually gets one of the front seats so she can be on top of everything. Oh well, you can’t have everything you want everyday. Twenty minutes after Victoria arrived for class a substitute professor came into the room.
“Your regular professor is not in today. You may all leave.” The professor said then walked out. Everyone in the class kind of looked at each other thinking that this was some dream, but it wasn’t. Eventually everyone left.
“I thought you had class at this hour?” Lance asked coming up behind her.
“I usually do, but my professor is out sick so I was allowed to leave.” Victoria said.
“I don’t have a class right now either. Do you want to go get a bite to eat? My treat?” Lance asked.
“I would love to.” Victoria said. ‘Am I that obvious’? She thought to herself feeling like she smiling from ear to ear. Throughout the walk to the student union, Victoria pretty much kept a straight face.
“Do you not like me or something?” Lance asked when they sat down?
“Why would you ask me that?” Victoria asked. “You haven’t said a word the whole walk here. I feel like I’m boring you.” Lance said.
“No, not at all. Is there something you wanted to discuss?” Victoria asked.
“Yeah, I wanted to ask you out for a romantic dinner.” Lance asked.
“YES! I…I mean. What did you have in mind?” Victoria said.
“I know there aren’t any real dinner restaurants around here so I checked around and there is this restaurant about three miles outside the campus. Interested?” Lance asked her again.
“That would be really nice. What about tomorrow night?” Victoria asked.
“Great. I can call you tomorrow and we can set up a time.” Lance suggested.
“You know what might help?” Victoria asked.
“What?” Lance asked her.
“If you had my phone number.” Victoria said and they both laughed. Victoria gave Lance her number and he gave Victoria his.
“Have you met your roommates yet?” Lance asked her.
“Well, I only have one roommate. Her name is Brooke.” Victoria said.
“I do have two other roommates, but one of the I think is living with his girlfriend off-campus. So right now it’s just Paul and I living there. Right now, Paul is enough.” Lance said.
“Why don’t you put in for a single? You might get approved.” Victoria said.
“I think all the room’s are taken. Unless I find someone who’s willing to move into a single room and we would be moved into a double room.” Lance said. Victoria was thinking about a single room herself. She might then have enough closet space for half of her clothes.
“I was thinking of a single too.” Victoria spoke up unwillingly.
“Here’s a crazy thought. We could move in together!” Lance said laughing at his crazy idea.
“Why would that idea be so crazy?” Victoria asked him. She couldn’t believe she asked him that. It was like she was asking Lance to move in with her.
“We just met. What could we possibly have in common?” Lance asked her.
“Well we haven’t had any disagreements on anything so I guess we agree on pretty much everything.” Victoria said.
“I guess we could give it a try. Do you really want to live with me?” Lance asked her. Victoria couldn’t believe what she was getting herself into. She was going to move in with a guy that she barely knew.
“You can’t be that bad. Can you?” Victoria asked him.
“Not to me I’m not.” Lance said.
“We can both apply today. It might work.” Victoria said.
“Anything’s possible.” Lance said.
The following week when Brooke came back to the dorm from one of her classes, most of Victoria’s stuff was gone.
“Victoria!” Brooke called out but no answer. She went into the ladies room, but no sign of Victoria. Brooke knew that her and Victoria had a few disagreements from time to time but it was no cause for to move out.
“There you are!” Brooke said when Victoria came into the room.
“Yeah, I’m here. I’ve been here.” Victoria asked packing up a few more things.
“Are you leaving?” Brooke asked.
“Yeah, I’m moving in with Lance.” Victoria said.
“Run that by me again?” Brooke asked confused since the two just met a few weeks ago.
“Well, he wanted to move out of his dorm and I said that I would move in with him so that he wouldn’t have to be all alone.” Victoria said.
“I thought the point of moving was to be all alone?” Brooke asked.
“Well his roommate is a real jerk and I said I would move in with him. So now you can have this room all to yourself.” Victoria said.
“I like having you around. You’re someone to talk to at night when the room is too silent and for someone to listen to my guy problems.” Brooke said.
“Oh, that reminds me. I got you a gift.” Victoria said reaching up in the closet.
“You didn’t have to get me anything.” Brooke said when Victoria pulled out this big box.
“I know I didn’t have. But I wanted to.” Victoria said. She opened it up and the box had a picture of them at orientation and some odd pictures of them walking around the dorms together. On the bottom of the box there was a big journal.
“What the journal for?” Brooke asked.
“To write all your thoughts and stuff down when it’s late at night. If you call me in the middle of the night, I am going to kill you.” Victoria said.
“Thanks, this means a lot. I will probably get a replacement though.” Brooke said.
“Maybe. But I’m sure the girl will be honored.” Victoria said.
“Knowing my luck I’ll get a Marlyn Manson wanna-be who wears black all the time and listens to papa roach.” Brooke said.
“I don’t think they would let anyone in this school who did that.” Victoria said.
“Anything’s possible.” Brooke said.
“I’m going to be leaving here soon. But I’ll be back to get the remainder of my things.” Victoria said and noticed that Brooke was really sad.
“Don’t worry. I’m only a phone call away. As soon as I know the phone number I am. I know I won’t be across the room anymore. But nothing is going to change.” Victoria said.
“I know. Just not having you around all the time is the sad part. I’m gonna miss ya.” Brooke said.
“Don’t get all mushy on my now. I can’t stand it when other people cry.” Victoria said.
“Too late.” Brooke said wiping tears from her eyes.
“If it helps you can help me carry some of my stuff down to my car and we can ride to the new dorm room.” Victoria said.
“That would be great.” Brooke said.
Victoria walked up to the room and heard two people laughing. When Victoria walked in, she saw lance and another girl sitting really close and having a really good time.
“Am I interrupting something?” Victoria asked assuming that she was his girlfriend.
“No, just me and Lance catching up on old times. I haven’t seen this boy forever it seems like. If he starts being annoying, just call me and I’ll snap him back into reality.” She said.
“Hey, are you coming back?” Lance asked.
“Yeah. I’m going to go and get something to eat. What do you want?” She asked.
“Whatever you get is fine.” Lance said and gave her a small kiss on the cheek.
“Hey, what’s wrong with you?” Lance asked her. If looks could kill at that moment Lance would be dead in no time flat.
“Who was that?” Victoria asked with a twinge of jealousy in voice.
“Don’t tell me you thought… YOU DID! That’s my sister!” Lance said laughing.
“Oh, sorry.” Victoria said feeling really embarrassed.
“Her name is Stacy. I can’t believe you couldn’t see the resemblance Victoria.” Lance said still laughing a little bit.
“Did I miss something? I could hear laughing coming from all the down the hall.” Brooke asked coming into the room.
“I thought that his sister was his girlfriend or something.” Victoria said.
“Simple mistake.” Brooke said.
“No, they look a lot a like too. I just never picked up on it.” Victoria said still a little embarrassed.
“Looks like you’ve already moved in Victoria.” Brooke said noticing everything was in a place.
“Not in the least. I still have so much to do.” Victoria said. Just then Stacy walked back into the room carrying food for more than two.
“Stacy, why is there so much food?” Lance asked.
“I felt bad getting food for just the two of us, so I brought food for Victoria too.” Stacy said.
“Hey, Victoria I’m going to go back to my dorm room. See you later.” Brooke said.
“Was that your sister?” Stacy asked.
“No, that was my former dorm mate Brooke.” Victoria said.
“Victoria, where are you from?” Stacy asked.
“Connecticut. I lived in a small town called Morton.” Victoria said.
“How did you and Lance meet?” Stacy asked.
“We met at the student union during registration.” Lance said.
“And you two are already moving in together. Things must have changed since I was in the dating field.” Stacy said.
“Oh, are you married?” Victoria asked curiously.
“Yes, his name is Ford. He’s wonderful.” Stacy said smiling.
“I can’t wait until I get married. I’m going to have the biggest wedding. Event of the year.” Victoria said. Stacy looked at Lance and he was fixated on Victoria when she described her wedding.
“I’m going to the ladies room, I’ll be right back.” Victoria said leaving the room.
“Have you asked her out yet?” Stacy asked.
“What are you talking about?” Lance asked.
“Well it’s obvious that you like her. Have you asked her out on a date yet?” Stacy asked again.
“Yes. We have a date tomorrow night.” Lance said.
“I really like her.” Stacy said.
“So do I.” Lance said. Lance and Stacy were talking about Victoria but kept their mouths clothes when Victoria came back.
“Where you two talking about me?” She asked.
