You would think that since you’re in your third year of college that your schedule would be pretty easy, right? Think again. For Victoria, it was just the opposite. The schedule was completely the opposite of what she had originally applied for and there were long lines everywhere. Since she wasn’t getting anywhere roaming around, Victoria got in a line and did what every student was doing. Just standing there in a line hoping to get waited on before the semester starts.
“Excuse me.” A man with a deep southern accent said.
“That’s quite alright. Everyone’s so jammed in here.” Victoria said when the man looked up.
“Hi, I’m Lance.” He said extending his hand for a handshake.
“I’m Victoria.” She said shaking his hand. Since none of the lines were moving, Victoria decided to sit down and Lance followed.
“What year are you?” Lance asked.
“Junior. You?” Victoria asked.
“Same. I can’t wait to graduate and get a real job.” Lance said.
“What’s your major?” Victoria asked.
“Business Economics. My minor is in Accounting so I’ll always know what I’m doing.” Lance said.
“Good thing. I see you haven’t been to your dorm room yet.” Victoria said remarking on Lance’s luggage he had.
“Oh, no. I figured that everyone will probably be dropping their stuff off at this time so I might as well get my registration done. Looks like I got fooled.” Lance said.
“I think everyone had the same idea this time. Where are you from?” Victoria asked.
“Laurel. It’s a small town in Mississippi.” Lance said.
“That explains the accent. I’m from Morton. It’s a small town in Connecticut. Nothing ever happens there. I was so excited when I got to leave.” Victoria said.
“Weren’t you going to miss your family?” Lance asked.
“Not really. My mom died when I was sixteen and my father dropped me off at my aunt’s house a week later and that’s the last I saw or heard from him since.” Victoria said.
“I’m sorry. Must be really painful for you.” Lance said.
“Actually it’s not really that tough. I would rather my father be happy somewhere else then miserable with me and having to take care of me.” Victoria said.
“Hey, the line’s moving.” Lance said getting up.
“It’s about time.” Victoria said doing the same. About a couple of hours of talking and finding out information about each other, they were up to the front. They were in luck; their dorms were close to each other.
“Where’s your stuff at?” Lance asked.
“My car. I didn’t feel like lugging it around.” Victoria said.
“Yeah, like me.” Lance said.
“We are almost at your dorm room.” Victoria said. Hardly any time went by when they reached Lance’s room. As they were walking in, Lance realized he was the last one to arrive.
“You have to be Lance. If you’re not, then you’re staying anyway.” Paul, one of his roommates said.
“Yeah, I’m Lance.” He said.
“I’m Paul. Since you were the last to get here, you got the top bunk. Are you okay with that?” Paul asked.
“Yeah, it’s fine.” Lance said.
“I’m so sorry, where are my manners? I’m Paul, what’s your name?” He asked Victoria.
“Oh, Victoria.” She said.
“Nice to meet you Victoria. How long have you two been dating?” Paul asked.
“We aren’t dating. We both met in the student union waiting to get registered.” Lance said.
“Oh, that’s cool. I’m sorry, I jump to conclusions all the time.” Paul said.
“That’s fine.” Victoria said with a smile. As soon as Lance sat everything down the two of them left.
“I guess we can go to your room now since you had to put up with my roommates.” Lance said.
“No, that’s okay. They weren’t that bad, I would’ve thought the same thing to if one of my roommates walked in with a guy. Besides, I’m not the one who has to live with them for a year.” Victoria said.
“Yeah, don’t remind me. I can’t stand them already, but I guess I’ll have to adjust to it.” Lance said. The whole entire day they spent it together, talking about their home lives and how much they are going to miss everything being done for them.
“Where have you been?” Brooke, one of Victoria’s roommates, asked when she walked into the room at around midnight.
“Walking around the campus, getting to know my way around. Why the third degree?” Victoria asked.
“Well, since you had a big smile on your face when you walked in tells me that you must have met a guy that you liked and he probably likes you back since you’ve been gone all day and I never did see you in my times walking around the campus to find my classes.” Brooke said.
“Okay, so I met a guy. Big deal. Nothing special.” Victoria said climbing into bed.
“You were glowing too.” Brooke said and Victoria opened her eyes very widely.
“Okay, I met this wonderful guy. His name is Lance. He’s so sweet. He’s from Mississippi. There, ya happy!” Victoria said.
“No, what did you two do today?” Brooke asked.
“Just what I said before. Walking around the campus. I walked with him to his dorm room so he could drop his stuff off and I met one of his roommates.” Victoria said.
“What was that like?” Brooke asked.
“Too weird. Right off the bat he thought I was Lance’s girlfriend.” Victoria said.
“You wanted to say yes right?” Brooke asked.
“No.” Victoria said but in her heart she wanted to scream ‘yes!’
“Does he know?” Brooke asked. It was the same question that she asked every time Victoria met a guy.
“No, why should I? I just met him. We are just friends, nothing more, nothing less. I don’t want to jump into a relationship in my junior year of college. The main focus on my mind right now is getting my degree and getting a job that I can really appreciate.” Victoria said.
“You know Vic, the first sign of truth is the up-front denial.” Brooke said.
“Goodnight Brooke!” Victoria said then turned out the light.
“Sure! Change the subject Vic.” Brooke said turning over and closing her eyes.
“One more thing. Don’t call me VIC! I hate it.” Victoria yelled.
“Fine, VICTORIA!” Brooke said. Victoria wanted to drift off to sleep, but she couldn’t. Every time she closed her eyes, the image of Lance would appear in her face. They only met that day and already she wanted to be his girlfriend and be with him everyday. Is this what love at first sight feels like? Victoria pondered that question over and over in her head until she finally fell asleep.
