Peter's Doppleganger Part Eight

Peter's Doppleganger

Part Eight

As soon as they were able, Micky and Nicole went to see Davy. He was barely awake when they got there, and was only wiping the sleep out of his eyes when they came in. He yawned a large yawn before greeting them.

"'Ey guys," he said. "What are you doing 'ere so early?"

"Davy, we've got to ask you something," Nicole said, excitedly, barely able to hold back her excitement.

She told Davy to sit down on the bed and put a chair in front of him. Then she told Micky to sit in the chair, facing Davy. When they were seated, she told Davy to hold Micky's hand.

Davy looked at her a little strangely but agreed.

"Now what?" he asked.

Sitting down next to Davy, she looked into his eyes so he could see she was sincere.

"Tell me what you know," she said. "Tell me what you know about Peter. Everything."

He looked back at her with equal sincerity. "Why?" he asked.

"Just trust me, okay," she said.

Reluctantly, Davy nodded and shut his eyes, thinking. Then, slowly, he told them what had happened over the past year. Everything that had happened since the day right after the full moon when he'd first suspected something was going on.

He told them of how Peter's double had switched places with him and shoved Peter away. And how he'd then blown up the building that Peter was in with dynamite to eliminate him. And how, when he'd tried to tell the others, he'd had him shoved in a mental institution and convinced the others he was insane.

Micky and Nicole looked at each other with wide eyes. He was telling the truth. When Davy was finished, he looked from one to the other in search of answers, and then gave up. He sighed and looked at the floor.

"Not as if you'd believe me," he said. "I've been trying to tell you this, and it hasn't worked."

Nicole looked at Micky and smiled.

"Davy we believe you," she said.

Davy looked up and looked at her face, wondering if he was imagining it. She was smiling at him with wide eyes. He looked at her doubtfully and then at Micky, who nodded.

Micky took Davy's hands again. "Lie to me. Tell me," he thought for a moment, and then decided. "Tell me where you're from."

Davy looked at him strangely for a moment. He opened his mouth to speak and felt a shiver run down his spine. He shut his mouth and found himself opening it again. Before he could stop himself he found himself speaking.

"I'm from Manchester, England," he said. Then he realized what he'd said and tried to deny it. But the same words came out again. He looked at Micky and then at Nicole.

"What's going on here?" he asked. Micky smiled at him and let go of his hands.

"You're not the only strange one around here," he said, still grinning. Davy looked at him with confused eyes. Then they opened wide.

"You mean...." he began.

Micky grinned. "I can make anyone tell the truth," he said. "That's why we believe you."

They watched Davy to see his reaction. His face lit up happily and he grinned, the first time he'd done so since he'd seen Thomas.

"Does this mean that I can....go home?" he asked. His spirits lowered, however, when he saw it wasn't to be.

"Sorry, Davy, but when Peter's double put you in here he made the instructions explicit that only he could let you out," Nicole explained.

"Pleter," Davy said.

"Huh?" Micky asked.

"Pleter," Davy repeated. "Thomas said his name was Pleter."

"Davy, you said...Pleter tried to kill Peter?" Nicole said. Davy nodded. "Then, is Peter dead?"

Davy shook his head. "No."

"What happened to him?" she asked.

"I'm not sure exactly," he said. "But I'm sure 'e's alive. I can feel it. And 'e's trying to get 'ome."

Just then Micky thought of something. "What about the baby?" he asked. Davy looked confused.

"Baby?" he asked.

"Yeah, the baby, where is she? Peter..I mean Pleter took her and now she's gone. Where is she?"

Davy shrugged. "Can't you find her, Davy?" Nicole asked.

Davy shrugged again. "I can try," he said. "But I can't promise anything."

"You are still...telepathic, aren't you?" Micky asked.

"Oh yeah, it's just that there isn't much I can do right now. They've put me on about eighty million different drugs and medicines. They kind of screw up my brain," Davy explained.

"And limit the telepathy," Nicole said. He nodded.

"Davy, can I try something?" Micky asked.

"What?" Davy asked.

"I don't know if it'll work, but I want to try, okay?" Davy agreed. Micky placed his hands on Davy's head and thought hard. He shut his eyes. Davy did the same. Nicole watched as both of them sat there. They both appeared to be concentrating hard.

After a few moments, Micky took his hands off Davy's head, opened his eyes and looked at Davy to see if the experiment worked. Davy just sat there, eyes still shut.

"What did you do to him?" Nicole asked Micky.

"I tried to clear his head," Micky said without taking his eyes off of Davy.

"Do you think it worked?" she asked. He shrugged.

"I sure hope so," he replied.
