Part Ten

It was soon morning and Fiona awakened to find Mike and Peter were both already awake, and in the kitchen. Mike was cooking some bacon and eggs on the small stove, and Peter was sitting at the table, drinking some tea. He looked a lot healthier than he had te evening before.

Fiona stepped into the room and smiled slightly at the domestic scene. "Morning," she said to neither in particular. She crossed the room and took the half-empty pot of tea from the stove and placed it on the table.

"Morning," Peter and Mike greeted in unison. She wan't oblivious to the wink Mike tossed at her as she passed him at the stove.

"Feeling better?" she asked Peter as she took out a teacup.

"Oh, yes, much," he replied. "What did you give me?"

"Oh, just...tea," she replied mysteriously. Peter looked sceptical as she poured herself a glass, but didn't contest it. Instead, he gestured towards the stove.

"You seen what he's cooking?" he asked.

Fiona nodded as she replaced the teapot. "Yeah," she replied. "Bacon and eggs."

"So?" Mike asked.

"I dunno...does it look safe to you? I don't remember him being much of a chef," Peter replied doubtfully.

Fiona shrugged as she examined the breakfast. "It looks okay," she replied.

Peter wasn't convinced. "Looks can be deceiving," he reminded her. Mike looked insulted.

"Well, if you don't like my breakfast, you can make yer own," he snapped back.

Fiona chuckled slightly. "Boys, try to behave," she told them as she sat down with her cup of tea. "I'm sure Mike's breakfast will be just fine," she told Peter.

"Thank you," Mike replied, satisfied, as he turned off the flame.

Peter still appeared less than convinced, but he didn't say anything as Mike dished out breakfast for the three of them.

The hospital was crowded, but Joanne had managed to find her way to the right room. Davy was chatting with the doctor.

"I thought the baby wasn't due for another two months," he was saying.

"It isn't, " Nicole agreed. Joanne sat next to her mother. "But it's coming."

"It seems they're eager to get out earlier than usual," the doctor replied. "But unfortunately it's a little to early."

"They?" Davy asked. "There's more than one?"

The doctor nodded. "We can clearly hear two heartbeats," he replied. "There's at least two of them."

"I thought so," Nicole replied. She was silent a moment. "Now what do we do."

"Try and hold off labor as long as possible," the doctor replied as he turned to leave. "The later the twins are born, the better." With that, he was gone.

"I guess you're stuck here for awhile," Thomas said with a sigh. He'd been silent until now.

"Looks that way," she agreed. "Davy, you and Micky mind watchin' these two for awhile? Good thing you guys got back or I don't know what I'd do with them."

Davy nodded. "Babysitters, at your service," he replied with a salute. She grinned. "I'll take these guys home for now."

She nodded. "That's great," she replied. She hugged both kids as they left. "Be good," she reminded them.

"Okay, it wasn't bad," Peter admitted as he finished off his breakfast.

Mike grinned. "See, I told ya!" he replied.

"I thought it was delicious," Fiona agreed, returning his wink as she stood up to put her plate in the sink. "I'll have to hire you as my cook."

Peter found this hilarious. Mike shot him a glare.

"Um, I'm gonna go get dressed now," Peter decided, slowly backing out of the room.

"You do that," Mike replied. He sighed, shaking his head as Peter left the room.

"Don't mind him," Fiona told him, wrapping her arms around his neck. "He doesn't mean anything by it."

"I know," Mike replied. He leaned behind him and kissed her. "But there's somethin' I've been meanin' to ask you," he began.

"Yeah, me too," Peter said as he entered the room. He held the stone in his hands. "About this." Mike heaved a sigh.

"Oh? What's that?" Fiona asked. Peter handed her the stone and filled her in on what had happened with Mari.

"Then last night a woman appeared and said that the boy was ready," Peter finished. "I'm thinking the boy she means is Thomas."

Fiona raised an eyebrow in thought. "Possibly," she replied. "Reminds me of a legend my other used to tell people. I wonder if they're related."

"Legend?" Mike asked. She nodded.

"But Thomas isn't that old yet," Peter said thoughtfully when the story was complete. "How could he be ready?"

"I don't know," Fiona replied. "But I do agree that you need to get home as soon as possible. "If Thomas is ready for the task, he's going to need both of you to help him."

"Then you'll get us home?" Peter asked.

Fiona shook her head. "I can't," she replied. Peter's face fell. "At least not right away. I'll need at least a day to recharge. Which means the earliest I'll be able to get you home will be tomorrow."

"Tommorow. That's better than nothing," Mike replied optimistically.

Peter nodded. "That, and I might not be able to put you right where you want to be," Fiona added. "My aim's a bit off, as you could tell the first time."

Both nodded. "I'll do my best to send you both home tomorrow afternoon," she promised.

"The baby?" Micky asked. "I thought she was only seven months along."

"She is," Joane replied. "It's coming early."

"Oh, boy."

"Yeah, that was my reaction," Davy replied. He and Joanne and Thomas had just entered the Pad and informed Micky of what was going on.

"So what are they going to do?" Micky asked.

"Delay labor as long as possible," Davy replied. "That's what the doctor said."

"Ah. Well, there's a good thing about Mike and Peter being missing then," Micky decided. "Extra bed!"

Davy just chuckled, shaking his head slightly as he helped the kids get settled in.
