George got back today and one of the first things he wanted to do was see me. So I skipped the morning lessons and went to the room considered his study or office. It's a round room, kind of like the oval office, and furnished pretty nice, with books all around the outside in polished bookcases. The floor's polished also and in the center is a big desk that's made of some dark wood. It shines so bright you don't think that it's real wood, but it is. It's just covered with a lot of wax and polish.
George is sort of short and bald and he was sitting behind this huge desk in an even bigger chair. Altogether the funiture went together to make him look even smaller and balder.
I wasn't nervous at all because I've gone through this little meeting with George a million times before and it's aways the same. This time was no different.
George is an okay kind of guy. He's pretty easy going and laid back and I usually don't have a problem with him. The only thing he does that gets on my nerves is call me "Maggie". No matter what I do I can not get him to call me Skylar.
Even though my first name is technically Magnolia and therefore the name "Maggie" would be sensible, I much prefer the name Skylar and most people don't have a problem with it. Some still hold out and call me "Maggie" or Magnolia. Like George.
The visit went basically how I expected it. George told me how nice it was to see me and all that and I just smiled politely like I'm supposed to do and said it was nice to see him. Then he said he hoped I enjoyed staying here and I replied that I did even though I really don't. It wasn't really a lie because I do have fun with Colin and Susan.
Then he proceeded to give me my birthday gift. He always insists on doing that, even though I never ask him too and I would rather he didn't. But since I had left long before my birthday and been at Mom's since he hadn't had the chance yet.
So George opened a drawer in the giant sized desk and took out a small box and then stepped out of the giant chair and walked around to the front of the desk. He gave me the box and then sat on the giant desk.
I opened the box and inside was a really nice (and probably rather expensive) silver necklace. I took it out of the box and then noticed that hanging from it was a small stone.
It wasn't a stone like a diamond or a ruby or anything like that. It seemed to be a regular old rock. But I could tell that it was far from a regular rock. It was thin, no longer than my finger, and it was sort of blue and green at the same time.
It confused me a bit. The necklace was very pretty, but the rock didn't seem to go with the chain. I put it on, to please George, and it started to glow.
I looked at George for an explanation but he didn't say anything about it. Instead he just complimented me on how nice it looked. I asked him where he'd managed to find such an...odd necklace.
George told me he'd found it in the magic realm at a stand. He had told them he was looking for a present for a sixteen year old girl, and after describing me to them, the old woman running the stand had immediately handed over the stand. When he'd tried to select another item, she insisted, and then offered it for free. To please her, George had taken it, and given her the original asking price.
I still have the necklace and the stone now, and it seems to glow every so often for no apparent reason. I have a feeling it might mean something, but what? I guess I have no way of knowing yet.
