The Girl I Left Behind Me

The Girl I Left Behind Me

Part Three

(Meanwhile, back at the church)

Eliza was beginning to awake from her chloroform-induced sleep. At first she was relieved to be alive, but then she realized some one was missing - Davy.

When she first awoke, she found she had a big headache and was a bit nauseous (which is a common after effect of chloroform). She looked over to where Davy should have fallen, but there was no one there. Shakily, Eliza stood up. The others were starting to awaken, but she hardly noticed them. There was no sign of Davy.

Thinking quikly, she ran up and down te curch, looking for him and calling his name. She kept hoping that the next person she saw lying on the ground would be Davy, and she would be so reieved. But she didn't see him.

Running, she headed out the door. Someone stopped her in her tracks. She didn't know who it was, but she buried her face in that person and sobbed.

"Davy," she wailed. "He's gone, I know it."

"Now calm down, Eliza," the voice responded. She looked up and saw it was Mike. "I'm sure he'll be okay." He stroked a hand through her dark hair, trying to calm her.

"No, he won't be. I just know it. He's gone. I'll never see him again."

After about a half an hour, someone called the police. Eliza was in tears, sobbing hysterically as she told the police what had happened.

"Any idea who might behave a grudge against him?" a detective asked her.

"No, no one," she replied, blowing her nose on a Kleenex.

"Any idea why anyone would want to kidnap him?" the detective continued. Eliza shook her head.

"No," she sobbed. "I don't know why anyone would want to take him."

"I do," said a voice from behind her. Eliza and the detective turned to see Mike standing there. "Davy's telepathic."

"He's what?" Eliza asked, shocked.

"Telepathic," Mike replied, as if this were an ordinary occurrence. "You know, he can read minds."

"Why didn't he tell me about this?" she asked, stunned.

Mike shrugged. "I don't know," he replied, calmly. "Maybe he was afraid you wouldn't like it. Who knows. But they could do some damage with his power." The detective nodded, scribbling in his notebook.

After a few hours, Micky and Mike started to head back to the Pad, seeing no reason to stick around. Eliza came with them, to be near in case anyone heard anything about Davy.

Davy was starting to get a cramp from sitting in the same place for so long. He'd been there for what seemed like forever, and now he was hungry, tired, and bored.

A light came on overhead, nearly blinding him. He squinted in the light at the dark shapes in front of him. Slowly, they came into focus. There were three men. Forgetting he was gagged, Davy tried to speak, but all that came out were the same muffled protests as before.

The first man stepped forward. He was tall, about six foot five, with flashing red hair and bright green eyes.

"I suppose you're wonderin' why you're 'ere," he asked. When he spoke he had the same, thick accent as Davy's, but his voice held an ominous ring. Davy, unable to respond, just glared. "Well, I'll tell ya," the man continued. "Ya see, we've 'eard about you, me and me lads, and we figured you could be of some 'elp to us." Noting Davy's questioning look, he continued.

"Yes, that right, Mistah Jones, we know all about you an' your li'l brain 'ere." He tapped Davy on the back of the head.

The second man was a few inches shorter then the first, with a balding head and a dark mustache. He spoke with the same accent.

"Oh, don't you be playin' innocent wit' us," he scolded, waving a finger at Davy. "We know you. You can get in people's brains. Find out what they're thinkin'. You could 'elp us. What d'you say?" He stepped around behind Davy and removed the gag.

"I don't know what you're talking about," Davy insisted when he was able to speak.

"Oh, don't you?" the second man asked.

The other man smacked Davy in the back of the head. "Maybe I can knock some sense into 'im," he laughed.

The third man now stepped forward, and the others were silent. He was obviously the leader, Davy noted. "Easy Alistair," he said to the redhead. "'E can't 'elp us if 'e's dead, now can 'e?" He stepped past the second man and stood in front of Davy. He grabbed his chin and tilted his head upwards.

"Listen boy, we know about you so it's no use denyin' it. You're gonna 'elp us or else," he warned.

"Or else what?" Davy challenged, fire blazing in his eyes. The man reached down and took a photograph from his pocket. Davy saw it was of Eliza.

Davy gasped as the man violently tore the photo into shreds and dropped in the floor. Then he stomped on the shreds.

"Or else she'll die," he said calmly.

His head spinning, the only thing Davy could think of was the safety of Eliza. "If I do what you want, she'll be safe?" he asked.

The man frowned for a moment. Slowly, the corners of his mouth turned upward into a smile. Then he grinned.

"Provided your information is correct," he replied.

It was Mike who, on the way home from the interrupted wedding, thought of a way to locate Davy and hopefully save his life. The idea was to use Thomas to try to locate Davy. The two were close, and since Thomas was so good at what he did, he and Davy were most likely already in contact with each other.

Thomas hadn't gone to the wedding. This was his own choosing. When his mother, father, uncles, Eliza, and even Davy had attempted to ask him why not, he had only shrugged and said he had a feeling he'd be needed at home. This wasn't the first time that he'd predicted such an event, and the others wondered to what other extent Thomas' abilities went.

And so, when the arrived at the house after the wedding, they found that the baby-sitter they'd left for Joanne was gone (as was Joanne), and Thomas was sitting on the couch, in deep concentration.

When he returned from his trance, he smiled up at the others. But it was a sad smile. His mother knelt down before him and looked into his innocent blue eyes.

"Thomas," she began. "We need your help." Thomas nodded and waved her request away.

"I know, Mom. But it isn't really you that needs my help. It's Davy."

The others exchanged glances. "Do you know where he is?" Nicole asked. Thomas looked at each of them in the face.

Micky, Mike, Peter, and Nicole showed worry, anguish, and a glimmer of hope. Then he looked at Eliza. He looked deep into her dark eyes. She didn't shy away. Somehow she knew that it was necessary for Davy to be saved.

Eliza felt a shiver go down her spine as she stared into the boy's eyes. He was so strange. But what exactly was he looking for in her?

Thomas broke his gaze with her and looked at his mother. "I'll help you if you help me," he replied, smiling slightly. Her eyebrows raised.

"Of course, Thomas. What do you need?" she asked, wondering what he could possibly request.

"I need your help," he replied. "I want Eliza to see him."

"She will, once he's found," Nicole replied.

Thomas shook his head. "No. She needs to see him now. I want her to see what I see. Transfer the images."

Nicole nodded. "I understand."
