BURN A FLAG FOR AMERICA

by Luiz Gomes

Burn a flag today? Sounds like a fun way to show your youthful rebellion, huh? Well, for me it is a lot deeper. I think that every American has a right and an obligation to burn a flag. Don't mistake anything I say; I am by no means pro-American or a patriot. I fucking hate this country and I am convinced that we have royally fucked ourselves as a species, but that is another rant soon to come. When this country was founded, they had the right idea: rebel against our oppressors, self determination, live how you want to live, and do what you want to do, without some whig covered bastard telling you how to do it. The fore fathers of this country were anti-imperialists and anti-government. Thomas Jefferson once said, "The government that governs best, governs least." this is the right idea. Yeah, I am an Anarchist, but unlike so many others with the same political title, I understand and accept that Anarchy wouldn't work in our society today (another rant to come). I am very happy to consider myself a part of what I believe is an 'educational revolution'. Without the proper education, no movement was ever successful.

Anyway, not to stray from the point of this article, the founding fathers were agrarian socialists, in a watered down form, who had the right idea. The stars and stripes were originally similar to the red and black flag today: a flag of rebellion. Due to our country's habit of telling us the history that they want us to hear, these ideas are no longer preached or practiced by the majority. The true form of democracy that they had intended has been distorted and remolded to fit 'modern society', a TV-brianwashed civilization of zombies who have been programmed to accept whatever those who are 'educated' tell us. It is a crime in today's society to even think out against the norm. And the flag of our country has become a symbol of freedom? Freedom to what? Freedom to think how we want? No. Freedom to go share what we want when we want to? No. Freedom to live in a lifestyle of our choosing? No. Freedom to assemble? No. We aren't free. We are slaves to a society owned by multinational, imperialistic corperations. I am a firm believer that if our founding fathers were here today, not only would they be on the front lines of the protests that we go to, but they would encourage another revolution and adopt the red and black ideals that so many of us foster. They would be disgusted at how 'Americans' live today, and at how five percent of the world owns ninty percent of the wealth. They would encourage another revolution, only this time it would be far more intelligent.

As a person with the same beliefs as our founding fathers had, I petition you all to burn a flag today. Burn it for your beliefs. Burn it for protest. Burn it for no reason at all; just burn it, and burn it with the idea that it has become a symbol of a socisty turned against its founding beliefs. The flag has no meaning anymore, except that one day a year, you're supposed to raise and praise it. Fuck that. Set it ablaze!
