The Road to Destiny: Chapter 27

Jax turned away from the wall as the sound of footsteps drifted towards the bedroom door. They paused, and he sat up in the bed, waiting for Keesha to come in. It was quiet for awhile and then a moment later, the steps disappeared, followed by the shutting of the door down the hall.

"Look who finally left the bed."

Keesha gave Mrs. Sellers a weary smile. "Good morning...or afternoon." she looked around the kitchen, ending with a glance back at Mrs. Sellers sitting at the table. "Where's Jax?"

"Well...he said he was going to take a nap. He got up early and made a breakfast from scratch...which he claims is the only thing he can do. He made bisquits and an omlette...yours is in the oven by the way."

Keesha nodded, pouring herself a glass of juice.

"Sweetie?"

"Yes?"

"Didn't you see him in the bed when you woke up?"

Keesha stopped drinking, the glass remaining near her mouth. She took another sip. "He's probably in another room."

"Why?"

"He does that sometimes when he feels I haven't had enough sleep." she lied. "He wants to make sure he doesn't disturb me, so some days I find him on the couch...you know. I'm going to eat and then I'll start dinner. Jax and I have to go early this evening if we're going to make it back home at a decent hour."

"Thank you." Mrs. Sellers answered quietly.

Keesha finished her food as her and Mrs. Sellers talked about nothing. Mrs. Sellers wanted to ask what was wrong, but she knew she'd never find out from Keesha. Jax was a lot more open in that way than she was. Keesha helped Mrs. Sellers to the living room, resting her broken leg up against a stack of pillows. "Chantel is coming by this evening."

"I can't believe all of you are making such a fuss over me."

"If anyone deserves being made a fuss over, it's you." Keesha placed a kiss on Mrs. Sellers cheek.

"Keesha..." Mrs. Sellers reached out sadly, touching Keesha's cheek as Keesha blinked in shock.

"Okay, you're worrying...please don't...I'm okay..."

"No, you're not...I'm really looking at you now, and no, you're not...there's a...lightmissing..."

"I'm just tired....I need to change." Keesha changed the subject quickly, moving away and jogging up the stairs.

Keesha opened the bedroom door carefully, trying not to wake up Jax. She turned, starting to close it...

Jax opened his eyes, watching as Keesha was closing the door.

Keesha winced as it creaked, glancing back at Jax

Jax shut his eyes quickly as Keesha started to turn.

Good, he was still asleep. Keesha finished closing the door. She went to her bag, pulling out her change of clothes.

Jax opened his eyes again, looking down at her as she was kneeling on the floor, taking out some clothes. How he wanted to fix this...he had to fix this...but he had no idea how.

Keesha froze at the sound of a deep sigh. She looked up but Jax was still sleeping. She stared at him...normally when Jax sighed like that it meant he was thinking of something that bothered him...but that couldn't be...he was sleeping now. Keesha stood carefully, reaching out instinctively and pulling the cover up over his shoulder.

Jax felt the cover move up and then all was still. Yet, he could tell Keesha was still standing over him.

Keesha tilted her head, looking at Jax while he slept, pulling her hand away as she realized what she had just done. Here she was, worrying about him, tucking him in even as she was angry at him, as if it was the most natural thing in the world. She sighed softly. She loved him so much...she even loved him now, though part of her wondered...maybe in some sick way her mother was right...maybe Jax had never loved her, even though he may have thought he did...or maybe he was bored with her now...or maybe he thought she wasn't worth the trouble he was having with his father. Keesha reached out, wanting to push away the strand of hair which was lingering near his eyes...she drew her hand away without touching him.

Jax opened his eyes for the final time, listening to the sound of the shutting door.

Late Afternoon

"Hi Jax...can you go in the kitchen and stir the sauce for Keesha...." Jax nodded, finishing his run down the stairs and heading into the kitchen. Mrs. Sellers tilted her head back, listening as he started to run water into the sink.

"Dishes?!" she called.

"Yes..." Jax came back in. "Where's Keesha?"

"Downstairs doing some laundry. You must love having her in your place...."

"To cook and clean?! Are you kidding? She does cook, but I wouldn't even think of asking her to clean, she would bite my head off, and rightfully so. Besides I have a maid."

"Oh to be so spoiled."

"Yes, well Keesha doesn't adore me like she does you. It's either have a maid or do it myself..."

"Speaking of adoring you...what's going on now?"

"With Keesha?"

"Of course."

"Lover's spat. Happens. Especially with people who have fought virtually since they day they met."

"You haven't had a fight like this one..."

"What did she tell you?"

"Nothing. She doesn't have to tell me. I can look at her, and I can look at you and tell something is very wrong."

"I'll fix it...we'll work something out..."

"Jax...come here."

Jax walked over to Mrs. Sellers.

"Now, you know I love you...I love both of you...and I know it's not any of my business, and I know that part of you wants to tell me just that...but Jax...I don't think you have any idea how bad this is, I really don't. You need to talk to her now. Whatever it is, it can't go any further if you want your relationship to last..."

"Mrs. Sellers..." Jax began to protest. "Stop worrying. I will figure out something..."

"Figure out what? You say something, whatever it is that you need to say, and figure whatever needs to be figured out together..."

Jax looked towards the kitchen at the sound of the water going off. "I need to do the dishes." "Keesha's obviously in there...what you need to do is talk to her."

"I can't do that."

"Why not?"

"I cannot tell her..." Jax dropped to his knees, whispering to make sure Keesha could not hear. "...that I'm afraid she's going to leave me...that will hurt her too much...I've hurt her enough."

"Jax, if you don't talk to her, she wii probably leave you. That's how bad it is."

Jax sighed. "No it's not..."

"Yes. It is. I can tell by looking at her. Listen to her in there...listen...all you hear are pots and her running up and down from and to the basement. She comes in, checks to see if I'm fine, but she doesn't say anything...obviously she hasn't said anything to you...I can't talk to her, not like I can talk to you. And not like you talk to her. She's on the brink of something...and I have a feeling..."

Keesha took some tylenol, leaning up against the counter.

She hated this...she absolutely hated it. She never should have told Jax she was in love with him, it was bad enough she fell in love with him in the first place. At least if she had kept it to herself she wouldn't feel so damn vulnerable now, as she waited for Jax to...do whatever he was going to do.

Why was she waiting? Why should she just wait around for Jax to leave her, if he was going to leave?

Because what if he wasn't?

But why should he get to decide that too...she groaned as her headache worsened. She hated this. Keesha heard the timer and ran back down the stairs, putting the wet clothes into the dryer. She jogged back up, closing the door to the basement before walking over to the stove. "Damn it..." she mumbled as she noticed her sauce was cooking too quickly, the top clattering as it bubbled. She went to take the top off...

"Keesha!" Jax stood up as he heard a loud clank "I'm fine!" she called. She shook her hand, burning from the hot pot cover. She picked the top from the ground, washing it before replacing it back on the the pot.

"What happened?" Jax asked softly as he walked in.

"I burned myself...it's no big deal."

"Let me see."

"I can take care of it myself, thank you." she walked over to the freezer, pulling out the tray of ice cubes. "Jax...I told you..."

Jax took Keesha's hand carefully. "Here?" he blew air softly onto her palm. Keesha felt her heart begin to break. "Keesha?"

When she didn't answer he looked up, his eyes locking with hers. "Oh...Keesha..." Jax reached up with his other hand, wiping away the tear that started to fall down her cheek as his own eyes watered. "I'm sorry..."

"Don't do that." Keesha pushed his hand away. "Don't come in here, and be all sweet and make this even worse for me....I can't think when you do that...I can't even think when you're near..." she forced back her remaining tears. She took her inmjured hand from his. "I think we need...time apart." she decided. Jax blinked, watching as Keesha looked down to the ground. Without another word she reached behind him taking the ice tray and walking over to the sink.

"Oh God...it's happened..." Jax said to himself as he bent his head to the floor.

"What?" Keesha looked at Jax.

"What?" he said, his tone one of business as he looked back up at her.

"What's happened?"

"I..."

"You just whispered Oh God...it's happened."

Jax stared at Keesha in shock. He said it outloud? Please say he didn't say it out loud.

"Jax...what's happened? Jax?"

Jax continued looking at Keesha...his mind racing as he tried to come up with a viable explanation.

Finally it hit him.

"You're leaving me. A part of me always wondered if you would just one day leave me."

Keesha's mouth dropped open slightly. "What?" she asked deeply. "You wondered what?"
