The Road to Destiny: Chapter 18
Jax stood in the elevator, whistling to himself. It stopped and he took
a breath.
"Afternoon..." Jax breezed down the hall, towards Hilary. "Is Keesha in
her office?" he asked, his tone one of business.
"No, she just went to lunch already. But..."
Jax continued his walk down the hall, stepping into his office and
shutting the door behind him.
"Where in hell have you been?"
Jax turned, looking at Jerry sitting in his chair. "What are you doing
here?"
"Waiting for you, what does it look like?"
"I had a meeting."
"Really? With who?"
"NOYB."
"None of my business..."
"Bingo. Get out of my chair. I have work to do."
Jerry stood slowly, moving toward the window as Jax sat. "Did Bridget
stop by again?"
"Why would she?"
"To say goodbye."
"And...why would she do that, unless you convinced her to leave again?"
Jerry shrugged. "I'm going to lunch."
"You sat here waiting for me and all you have to say is you're going to
lunch?"
"No, I also asked where you were. But no matter."
"Let me check on something, and I'll join you..."
"No. I'm not going to lunch with you. Give Hilary the rest of the day
off."
Jax laughed. "Can't whatever you're doing wait for until after work, we
need our receptionist."
Jerry pretended to think. "Nope. Bye."
Jax's laughter grew as Jerry closed the door. A second later his
intercom buzzed. "Yes Hilary?" he grinned.
"Excuse me..."
"She's going to lunch now." Jerry spoke. "So speak now or forever hold
your peace."
"Okay." he disconnected, his smile growing as he realized something. He
waited for a moment and then went over to Hilary's desk, pulling out the
list stating where executives planned to have their lunch. He scanned
down, found Keesha's name and left the office again.
Cameron stood as Keesha walked to the table. "Where's Momma?"
"I sent a driver for her, you know how she loves those limosine rides."
Keesha cut her eyes, but after a moment of debating sat down. "I'm having
lunch with my mother, not with you."
"So how long have you and Mr. Jacks been an item?"
Keesha just stared at him.
"I figured out that must be the guy you were hiding this morning. He was
the last man I saw you with, and you don't switch affections too quickly."
"I got over you rather soon," she stated blankly biting back a smile as
Cameron's eyes darkened.
"You know, he won't be able to handle Tiffany..."
Keesha leaned over the table. "You really do understimate him. As well
as overestimate yourself."
Jax paused in the doorway.
Why was Keesha having lunch with Cameron?
"Excuse me..."
"Oh, pardon me..." Jax moved out of the way.
"Hold on a second, aren't you Jasper Jacks?"
Jax stopped staring at Keesha, looking down at the woman in the wheelchair.
"That's where you want to go?" Jerry whispered into Hilary's ear.
Hilary sighed. She could get used to this.... "Keesha says the lasagna
there is divine."
Jerry grinned. "Then it's where we go." He took her hand as they
continued walking down the avenue.
Cameron glanced over, noticing Jax speaking with Keesha's mother.
"What?" Keesha turned, virtually jumping from her chair as she realized
what caught Cameron's attentions.
"Yes..." Jax nodded, glancing up again as he noticed Keesha coming towards
him.
"Well surprise surprise." Jerry placed his hand on Jax's back.
Keesha slowly finished the walk over. The best way to handle this was get
everyone away from each other. "Momma, let's go."
"Hi Keesha." Hilary smiled.
"Hi Hilary...Mr. Jacks..." She nodded at Jerry. "Jax...come on, Cameron
is waiting for you." she finished to her mother.
"You know the Jackses?." her mother guestured.
"Yes...Jax is my boss," she mumbled.
Jax cut his eyes at Keesha before walking out, not saying a word.
"Jax..." Keesha called after him.
"You never told me that....where is he going?" Tiffany asked.
"I'll be back..." Jerry left Hilary, following after Jax.
"Damn it..." Keesha shook her head. She just did the same thing he was
afraid he'd do to her. She hurt him pretending he meant less to her than
he really did...
"Watch your mouth..." her mother chastised her. "Now let's go, we don't
want to keep Cameron waiting....let's go...."
Keesha looked at her mother.
"Wait up!" Jerry had to run to catch up with Jax. He grabbed his arm.
"You're involved with her aren't you?"
Jax took a deep breath, finally turning and looking at Jerry. "Didn't you
hear...I'm her boss," he stated angrily.
Jerry shook his head. "I knew it...I told you not to get involved with
this girl..."
"Shut up!" he snapped. "You don't know anything about it." Jax started
down the sidewalk once more.
"Maybe so....but yet again, you're letting someone get to you!" he ran to
catch him again.
Jax waited for the light to change. "Wrong. She's already gotten to
me..."
"Oh no...Jax...please don't tell me you think you're in love with this
woman..."
"I don't think anything...I know..."
"Jax..."
The light changed. "But what does it matter anyway..." he murmured.
Jerry watched as Jax walked across the street..."Hey..."
"Sorry..." Keesha pushed past Jerry. "Jax!"
Jerry pulled Keesha back from the curb as the light changed and cars sped
past.
"DAMN IT!"
"Come on, I'll take you back." Cameron walked over to Tiffany.
"What is going on here..."
"You haven't figured it out, Mr. Jasper Jacks is Keesha's new boyfriend."
"Really?" Tiffany looked at Cameron and Cameron smiled as her face lit up.
Jax would have no idea what hit him.
"Where do you think you're going?"
Keesha looked, realizing for the first time who she had almost mowed down
in her rush to get to Jax. "Mr. Jacks..."
"Call me Jerry. In fact, that's the name you can put on your letter of
resignation. Effective immediately."
