The Proposal: Chapter 19
"I refuse to allow you to be ill." Jax whispered to
Keesha. "You are to wake up, do you hear me? You are
to awaken and be well." he ordered softly. "You have
made me fall in love with you, you have insisted you
love me as well, so you are not allowed to go away
from me now. You cannot leave me."
"He is on his way my lord." Maggie stood in the
doorway, watching as Jax knelt quietly in front of
Keesha. Mumbling words she could not hear. "He says
not to disturb her and...."
Jax barely acknowledged Maggie's presence, not even
looking in her direction as his hand waved her away.
Maggie turned to leave. She started down the hallway,
and the front door opened.
Jerry pushed his way past Maggie, calling Jax's name.
"He's in the sitting room..." Maggie attempted to
answer him.
"Jax!" Jerry stopped in his tracks. "What happened."
"She will not awaken," Jax whispered, touching
Keesha's cheek.
Soon Jerry was by his side. "What happened?" he
repeated.
"She will not awaken." Jax finally looked away from
Keesha, glancing over at his brother. He stared at
Keesha once more. "She was in the bath...and
something was wrong...she looked at me for a
moment...and then she faded away. What is wrong with
her?"
"She was at the prison this evening," Jerry answered.
"Why?"
"I do not know. However Victoria is missing and
Garcia..."
"What?" Jax's voice deepened. If Garcia did something
to hurt Keesha...
"Garcia is dead. Murdered."
Jax looked at Jerry once more. His mouth gaped open
slightly...that would explain her demeanor, her fear,
her shock...but...
"She wouldn't," he said.
"Are you sure, Jax? Are you sure Keesha did not finish
him?"
Two Hours Later
"Where in bloody hell is he!"
"Jax, quiet. Jules." Jerry reminded him. "Why don't
you go and get some air, and I will stay here with
your wife."
"I do not require any air." Jax stood from the floor.
"I require the bloody doctor to be here and..."
"Jax, go. I will stay. You will not do anyone any
good if you allow your worry to anger you any further.
Keesha prefers you when you are calm."
Jax sighed. "If..."
"If she wakes, I will send for you immediately."
Jerry promised. He watched as Jax slowly left the
room.
Jax stopped in the doorway, turning and looking at
Jerry.
"She will open her eyes soon," Jerry stated.
Jax nodded. He stared at Keesha for a brief moment,
and then he walked away.
Jerry finally turned his attention back to Keesha.
"You heard what I just said to my brother. Do not
make a liar out of me, he ordered, sighing as he
continued to wait.
Jax closed the front door, looking up at the stars as
he took steps away from the manor.
"Lord Jacks..."
Jax froze at the soft call of his name. He spun
around, looking.
"Lord Jacks..." A figure emerged from the shadow.
"Lady..."
Victoria Garcia walked over to him slowly. "Is she
all right?"
"What do you know about my wife?"
"She did not tell you?"
"What do you know?" Jax repeated slowly.
"He was so angry..." Victoria looked away. "He was
going to kill me..." she looked down, touching her
stomach where her and Garcia's baby continued to grow.
"He was going to take the baby...and kill me..." her
eyes teared.
"Jax..."
Jerry turned away from the window at the soft mumble.
He looked at Keesha on the sofa.
"Jax!" Keesha yelled, sitting straight up.
Jerry ran over. "MARGARET!" he called loudly as
Keesha looked around in a panic.
"He is outside. I will get him..." Jerry took her
hand, trying to calm her. She managed to nod and
Jerry ran off.
Jax began, "So you are telling me thay Lady Jacks..."
Jax looked over at the rumble of hoofs coming down the
road. Victoria glanced over. "A carriage..."
"Into the house. Lord Jericho is going to take you to
Adrian."
And before she could protest, Jax swept Victoria up,
carrying her to the manor.
Jerry threw open the door. "She...what is this..."
"Take her..."
Jerry held out his arms, taking Victoria from Jax.
"...to Adrian. And send her off...Now!"
Without another word, Jerry carried Victoria
downstairs where he could lead her through the
servants' exit.
"Jax..."
Jax turned as Keesha walked slowly over. "You're
awake," Jax breathed. He ran over to her, grabbing
her and holding her.
Keesha closed her eyes, sighing deeply as Jax's grip
tightened around her.
Jax buryied his face into Keesha's hair. "You're
awake." he repeated. Keesha answered him with a
mumble against his chest. Yet he couldn't understand
her and he forced himself to pull away.
"Pardon?"
Keesha looked up at Jax, tears spilling down her
cheeks. "I am a horrible evil person, Jax." she
repeated. Jax wiped the tears from her face.
"No you are not..."
"I've done a terrible...terrible...thing."
"And what exactly have you done?"
Jax and Keesha turned at the question coming from
behind them.
There, standing next to the doctor, was a detective.
"I am sorry, Jax." The doctor mumbled. "He insisted
on coming."
"Quiet. Do you know anything about Lord Garcia's
death, Lady Jacks?" The detective stepped forward.
Jax stood in front of Keesha, securing her behind him.
"She needs to be examined. And then if she is well
your questions will be answered."
"Actually..."
"That was not a request. Do you want me to remove you
from these premises myself?" Jax asked coldly. "She
is to be examined. And then your questions will be
answered. You may wait in here." Jax snapped his
fingers to the doctor. "Take her upstairs." he added
to him.
The doctor nodded and Jax turned his attention to
Keesha. He bent slightly, wrapping his arms around
her. "Say nothing...I will handle this." he swore.
Keesha looked up at Jax as he pulled away.
"Go."
Keesha nodded and started up the stairs, the doctor
following.
Jax looked as the detective watched them leave. "What
do you know about this?"
"I know that Victoria Garcia is not to be found." Jax
answered.
The detective looked at him.
"And without her here, there really is no need for
this investigation to continue. Is there?"
Keesha looked over as her chamber door opened. The
doctor stood from the chair next to her bed.
"Congratulations are in order." he said as Jax walked
into the room.
"Congratulations?"
"You are to be a father." the doctor smiled.
"Are...are..." Jax looked over at Keesha, but she was
playing with her wedding band, staring down at her
fingers.
"Am I positive? Yes. I have been doing this longer
than you have been alive. Her answers to my questions
have convinced me. You will be raising a little one."
The doctor turned his attention back to Keesha. "You
must take care of yourself."
Keesha continued fussing with her ring.
"She will. Thank you."
Jax opened the door and the doctor left. He closed
the door once more.
"Keesha?"
Keesha laid down in the bed. "Where is the officer?"
"Officer?"
"Detective."
"He is gone. There is nothing for him here."
"How..."
"He is gone." Jax reiterated. "You need not worry."
Jax sat down at the edge of the bed.
Finally she looked over at him. "Why are you
smiling?"
Jax's grin faded at the emptiness in her eyes. "Did
you not understand? You need not worry. And we are
going to be..."
"I do not want this child."
Her statment hit him like a slap in the face. He
blinked slowy, barely managing to mutter "What?"
"You will raise it without me...I will not be here."
Keesha turned away from Jax as her eyes teared. She
sat up in the bed.
"Keesha..."
"I murdered him Jax."
Jax sighed, looking down at the bed. "I
know...Victoria told me...it was not your fault."
"It was not? I took the knife, and I murdered
him."
"Keesha, you managed to get the knife away from
Garcia..." He reached for her but she pulled away,
leaving the bed. Jax sighed again. "Victoria insists
that you stopped him from mudering her..." Jax
walked around the bed, over to her side. He reached
for her again.
Again she pulled away. Keesha shook her head, wiping
her tears. Yet her voice was so calm, Jax realized
just how final her words were. And his heart raced in
fear.
"You do not understand. Jax, I am an evil person. I
do not deserve you, I do not deserve this child. So
hear me, because I will not repeat this again. I will
stay here only long enough to have this child. And
then I am gone."
