Chapter 63
Chapter 63
Keesha tried to study as she sat on the lawn at PCU, but she couldn't.
She hadn't yet heard from Jerry, and she was thinking that was a bad
sign.
Finally her phone rang. "Yes!"
"It's me."
She sighed. "You don't sound too good."
"It doesn't look too good. La Zona Fabuloso here in Berkeley...just
shut down after 40 years of being here."
"Maybe they were planning to go out of business?" she hoped.
"No. That place was always packed. But that's not the worst of my
news. Jax was named a suspect this morning."
"Oh, God no..."
"I can be home tonight. We can tell him together..."
"No. I don't want to wait that long. I'll tell him. Thanks Jerry."
"What are you thanking me for. I failed."
"This isn't your fault. And you didn't fail anything. We'll think of
something."
"No, Jax. I haven't." John sat down on the sofa. "He's missing in
action again, is he? That's Jerry for you. Though I'm surprised you
can't find him."
"Yeah, me too."
"How is Keesha?"
"Fine. Dad, have you been using the caller id?"
"No."
"Dad..."
"I know...it tells us who called and when calls were made from this
number. Which I think is the oddest thing, because wouldn't we know if
calls were made from our very own number?"
Jax laughed. "I don't know, you're getting kind of forgetful in your
old age."
"Obviously you're the forgetful one if you don't remember who brought
you into this world...don't make me have to take you out of it."
Jax looked up and smiled at Keesha. He held up a finger and mouthed
*one moment*. Keesha closed the door, locking it before she sat down
and took her notepad out of her briefcase, writing.
"...yes....yes....okay....nah....I love you too...bye..." he hung up.
"So..."
"How are you?" she said as she continued writing.
"Um...fine...what..."
She placed her finger on her lips and shook her head at him. Jax came
over. "Was that your father?"
"Yes." Jax took the peice of paper.
His jaw dropped.
"I have to cancel, Ned."
Ned stood from his chair. "Look, play on your own..." Ned watched as
Jax and Keesha bolted down the stairs. "...time." he shook his head
and went over to the elevator.
"Murder?"
Keesha nodded.
"Sonny didn't kill himself?"
"No."
Keesha watched as Jax paced the sidewalk in front of her.
"And Hannah isn't missing. She's dead."
"Hannah...Hannah's dead. I don't..." he looked at her. "I didn't..."
Keesha nodded. "I didn't think so."
"Really?"
She sighed. "I questioned about Sonny. But, I knew you wouldn't kill
Hannah." she admitted.
"But you thought..."
"I didn't think so. I just wasn't...positive."
Jax nodded.
"But it didn't matter."
"It matters to me. As does the fact that you hid this from me for so
damn long."
"Jax..." Keesha reached for him.
"Leave me alone." Jax stated quietly and walked away.
Keesha took a breath, watching as Jax disappeared around the corner.
Jax and Alexis stormed into the Port Charles Police Department. "This
is a demand for disclosure of all evidence on my client." she slammed
the court order down on Taggert's desk.
"Excuse me."
Alex Garcia came up. "In here."
Alexis picked up the paper and followed Alex into an interrogation room.
"What's going on?"
"Oh you know."
"No I don't." Taggert looked at Jax.
Jax cut his eyes at him and walked into the room where Alexis and Alex
were. "The commisoner is coming."
"Unless he's bringing this alleged evidence, don't bother."
"We don't have to show you anything." Mac came in and reshut the door.
"We haven't arrested Jax for anything. Or are you here to confess?"
Jax glared at Mac. "I didn't kill Corinthos, and I sure as hell didn't
kill Hannah."
"Why did you bail Jason out."
"Because I *felt* like it." Jax answered before Alexis touched his arm.
She shook her head.
"Mr. Jacks doesn't owe you an answer. But you owe him plenty."
Mac sat down. "We have your gun, only your prints, found at the murder
scene."
"I don't have a gun. My gun was stolen months ago."
"Right....well, we found it. At the murder scene. Did I mention your
prints were on it? You had access to this scene. Everyone knows how
much you hated Sonny....and now you're seeing a shrink..."
"Excuse me?"
"Nightmares Jax? I never pictured you as the shrink type."
"That is none of your business...it is an invasion of my privacy..."
Jax leaned over the table.
"Look, I'm not missing Sonny by any means. And I can understand, you
have a lot to live for. You probabaly didn't plan to kill Hannah...she
was just at the wrong place at the wrong time...and you panicked, and
now you have to cover. I understand that. Anyone who knows what Sonny
took away from you would have to understand..."
"If anyone had a good reason to kill Sonny, it was me..."
"Jax!" Alexis ordered.
He glanced over at her. "But I repeat. I didn't kill Sonny. I didn't
even know he was murdered. And I would *not* murder Hannah."
"Where's your wife Jax?"
"What?"
"Knowing Keesha, she would be here to support you."
"Go to hell. Let's go." Jax finished to Alexis and headed to the door.
"That is, if you were innocent..." Mac jumped as Jax slammed the door.
"You have any place you can think of swept for bugs. I'm going to find
out where everyone else was...Jerry, Taggert....where was Keesha?"
"With V." Jax drank from his beer.
"And the restaurant is closed?"
"Yes, Alexis."
"You can't think of anyone who saw you?"
"I wasn't paying any attention. This had to be an inside job."
"I'm going to check on Moreno and Jason too. As for Jason, do not
speak to him any more."
Jax nodded. "I have a favor to call in about him anyway."
"Save it. If Mac didn't arrest you yet, that means that Dara is
sitting on it. I'll speak to her too."
"Okay."
"Is there anything else to tell?"
Jax shook his head, finishing his beer.
"No, or no nothing you're going to tell me."
"Good night Alexis." Jax got up from the bar and left.
Keesha watched as the final person left. She looked at the card given
to her...a *debugging* group. She shook her head and started to pace.
Where was he?
It was an hour before Keesha stopped pacing, turning as Jax closed the
door. "I was worried *sick*!"
"Sorry." Jax went into the kitchen.
She followed. "People were here." she handed him the card. He looked
at it and stuck it in his pocket. "Where were you?"
"Handeling something head on." he finished his water. "Good night..."
"Wait!" Keesha took Jax's hand. He looked down at the ground and then
looked over at her. "I'm sorry."
"I know."
"No, you don't know. I mean, I *knew*. I swear that I *knew*. But..."
"But you didn't want to be 100% sure, right. I mean, who *knows* what
I am capable of." Jax stormed off once more.
"Jax, please! *I* am capable of killing Sonny, I hated him that much.
Now, knowing that, why should I not give you the same leeway that I
would give myself."
"I would have told you, Keesha."
"Really? You would have told me you killed Sonny? I had to *beg* you
to tell me about your nightmares. Sure, you probably would have told
me sooner or later. We both tend to try and keep things to ourselves
at times. But the fact was, that though I was almost entirely
completely sure, it didn't *matter*. I don't give a damn about Sonny,
I only care about you."
"So, you hid the fact that I was a suspect from me."
"I was worried about you. And I just thought that maybe I could
protect you from more stress....Jax..." her voice trailed off as she
watched him go up the stairs. She heard the bedroom door slam shut.
Keesha sat down on the couch. She knew he would be angry...he had
every right to be angry. She would be absolutely furious if the tables
were turned.
But still, she would need him. And she couldn't help but think that he
needed her now. Yet at the same time, her actions were causing him to
close off.
AJ handed the man the money. "Have a great retirement."
"Gracias." he took the briefcase, heading for the train.
"So, you think he knows." Edward sat down.
"Jerry knows something. But Keesha won't tell him anything if she's
smart. AJ is insane."
"He's not insane. Just hurting."
"He's an empty loser. You know, part of me thinks it was some sort of
a blessing that Keesha lost their baby." Ned poured himself another
drink.
AJ cracked his neck. Keesha deserved to lose Jax for what she did. He
reached into his pocket and took a swig of vodka from the canister.
Why should she get to live happily, probably to have another child with
Jax, when she couldn't even take care of the one she had been blessed
with.
Besides, he doubted Jax would actually go to jail for it. But it would
make her suffer.
Like Carly made him suffer. And Jason made him suffer. And Ned.
And Keesha.
They all deserved to suffer. Just like Taggert's friend had told him.
"Words cannot express how absloutely furious I am."
Keesha looked up as Jax touched her shoulder. She turned around and
looked at him.
"I spent almost my entire life being *protected* for my own good. And
all that means is *lying.* I expect to be lied to from Jerry...I
didn't expect it from you. And don't tell me you didn't lie...because
you did. You didn't tell me what I had every right to know." his voice
was cold.
Jax removed his hand, and put it in his pocket as he headed for the
fireplace.
"I understand. And I'm sorry."
Jax nodded. "What's done is done."
"Jax..."
"I don't want to talk about it anymore."
Again Keesha watched silently as Jax just stood. Slowly he came over
and stood in front of her. "I love you." she finally spoke.
"I don't doubt that." he answered, reaching out and stroking her cheek.
He stared into her eyes for a second and then he walked away.
