Chance Encounters: Chapter 4

"That's right...indefinitely..." Jax walked to the window, cradling the phone against his ear. "...yes, I need it now, as in yesterday..." he added in a harsh whisper.

Keesha yawned, turning over at the soft muttered tone coming from across the room. She opened her eyes, focusing. Seeing Jax on the phone she immediately sat up, getting out of bed quickly.

Ready to bolt for the front door-just in case her instincts had steered her wrong for once.

Jax looked over as the bed creaked. He found Keesha moving slowly toward the door. "I have another matter to attend to immediately." He spoke quickly into the phone, knowing leaving was on Keesha's mind. "The car will be waiting for us in an hour. That's an order." he hung up.

"Us? A car?" Keesha stared at Jax.

"I've had enough of the bus, haven't you..." Jax slipped on his shoes. "Think of me as your own personal bodyguard," he smirked.

"I saw that movie."

"What movie?"

"The Bodyguard...with Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner." Keesha opened the door, waiting as Jax finished his glass of water.

"Okay..."

"Two people, two different worlds..."

"Let me guess, fall madly in love."

"Hopelessly." Keesha followed Jax down the hall.

"Sounds rather predictable."

"It is, but it's not." Keesha moved past Jax, walking out the hall door. "They aren't together in the end. They can't be."

Jax paused. "Are you trying to tell me something?"

"No. Just making conversation. Are you coming?" Keesha continued to hold the door as she waited.

Jax shrugged, walking towards her. "You know what?"

"What?"

Again Jax stopped, this time right in front of her. "I hate Kevin Costner movies."

"Are you trying to tell me something." Keesha teased.

"Nope. Just making conversation." Jax smiled with a wink.

And once again, butterflies raged through Keesha's stomach.

Keesha tilted her head, watching as Jax poured maple syrup on his pancakes. "I think it's your turn." she decided.

"My turn to what?"

"Share. You know a lot more about me than I know about you...and that hardly seems fair."

"What do you want to know?"

Everything. Keesha realized. But instead of speaking her thought, she merely shrugged.

Jax sighed slowly, debating how much he should actually say. "Let's see, I was born and raised in Australia..."

"No, really..." Keesha laughed. "Tell me something I can't tell by listening to you, or looking at you. What do you do for a living?"

"I'm a corporate raider...it's like a modern day pirate, that's the best way to describe it."

"Are you any good?"

Jax leaned over the table, and Keesha answered the pull to do the same. "I'm good at everything I do." he answered in a deep, seductive whisper. "If you hadn't stopped me last night, you would know that by now."

Keesha actually grew flustered and leaned back into her side of the booth. Jax smiled as she took a drink of water, looking outside as she tried to gather herself once more. "Well I know one thing you're terrible at." she finally looked at him. "You cannot stay focused on a conversation, if your life depended on it. You always have to go off on some...tangent."

"No actually..." Jax finally leaned away from the table himself. "Normally, I have excellent concentration. I'm not easily distracted at all."

"Only around a woman, right?" Keesha laughed. The waitress came over, refilling her coffee cup. She left and Keesha looked at Jax once more. "What?" she asked, wondering why he was staring at her.

"I'm debating whether to correct you or not."

"Correct me?"

"Yes. Should I let you think that every gorgeous woman leads me to the point of utter distraction...or should I be honest and tell you, that it's only happened since I met you."

Slowly, Keesha's smile faded, and Jax lost himself, staring into her eyes. He blinked slowly, "I've never met anyone as beautiful as you." the words just flowed from his lips, almost as if he had no control.

And Jax began to realize, around Keesha...he really did not have much control.

"Everything else seems completely insignifcant when I look at you...all I want to do..." Jax's gaze dropped to Keesha's mouth. "...is kiss you..."

Suddenly Jax cleared his throat. "Why do you think I followed you to this God-forsaken town?" he finished with a tease.

Keesha realized she had stopped breathing and took a breath. "I've been wondering that for a day now."

Jax noticed his pancakes were now cold and he pushed his plate away.

"Jax..."

"Ride's here." Jax virtually jumped up from the booth, thankful for the break in conversation.

Keesha stared as Jax walked over to the loden green, Jaguar convertible.

"How in the world, were you able to rent this on such short notice?...no, wait. A better question is where did you get this car."

"I told you..." Jax held the door open for Keesha. He waited until she was securely in. "I am very good at what I do." he smirked, closing the door behind her.

Keesha reached over, opening the driver's side. She buckeled her seat belt as Jax slid inside. "This is kind of flashy don't you think."

"No one's looking for you *and* me together. Just you. So we should be fine. Where are we going?"

"I am going to Switzerland eventually, so any airport where I can catch a flight to there is fine..."

"That would be any airport." Jax started the car, pulling off.

"And how do you know that?"

"Because I am going to fly you there."

"You fly planes too? What don't you do?"

"Leave a beautiful woman in distress." Jax grinned. "But I think I've told you that before."

Jax finished filling up his gas tank, getting back into the car. He looked over at Keesha-she was still curled up in her seat, sleeping. When they first started down the road, she had listened intently as he explained what he did for a living...

Unlike any other woman he had known, she seemed truely interested, asking questions, wondering how he got started raiding in the first place.

Soon Jax found himself telling Keesha other things-what it was like growing up, his close relationship with his brother, Jerry...and other things he rarely ever talked about. Because people rarely ever seemed to care.

At around 3:00 in the afternoon, Jax had realized he had spent a good five hours talking to Keesha....

Jax sighed deeply, reaching out, tempted to touch her...but he pulled away, shaking his head.

The thought that first came to him in that hotel pushed his way to the forefront.

How could he have managed to find the perfect woman...Jax reached out again, this time, letting his fingers touch her hair softly....

In what was so obviously the worst time.

Keesha shifted over in her seat, opening her eyes, rested from her nap.

"Good evening, Sleeping Beauty." Jax continued down the road.

"Evening?" Keesha answered. "It's still light out."

"It's exactly 6:01. That makes it evening."

"Hm."

Jax glanced over at Keesha's soft mumble, and realized she had barely moved. She was still somewhat curled up in her seat, as she was when she slept. Except now she was gazing up at him....

"What?"

...with complete adoration. She could used to seeing Jax first thing when she awoke...Keesha smiled slowly. "Nothing." With that she sat upright. "Pull over and I'll drive."

Jax yawned. "I have a better idea. We head into the city. Get a hotel room, have some dinner, rest up and get to the airport in the morning."

"Yes, I need two adjoining rooms..."

Keesha looked around the lobby as Jax spoke to the attendant at the front desk.

She found herself smiling...Jax was flying her to Switzerland...she would be able to spend one more day with him, before she had to tell him goodbye. She grabbed a brochure, walking over to the front desk.

Jax grinned at the light touch on his back.

Keesha rested her hands against his shoulders, gliding her body against his as she stood tiptoe behind him. Jax closed his eyes at the intimate feel, his breath catching in his throat as she whispered slowly into his ear..."Almost?"

"You shouldn't flirt with the person ordering the rooms...you may wind up stuck with me in the honeymoon suite," Jax said half-jokingly, opening his eyes.

"Promises...promises..." Keesha sung, moving from behind him. Her hand trailed down his back as she moved to stand next to him-her arm wrapped around his waist...

"So is this why you refuse to let me set you up with my cousin?..."

Jax turned urgently at the voice coming from the other side of Keesha. "Ryan Trenton..."

"Jasper Jacks...and this would be..."

"Keesha Ward," Jax introduced Keesha to his business associate.

"Nice to meet you." Keesha shook Ryan's hand.

"You never told me you were involved...but that explains why you would pass up closing a major deal by refusing to even meet with Stacey."

Keesha arched her eyebrow. A major deal could turn on whether Jax dated someone? "Interesting choice of work..." she mumbled.

"Pardon?" Ryan turned his attention back to Keesha.

"Sorry." Keesha realized she was still holding onto Jax's waist. She let go. "But we're..." she started to correct the situation.

"You caught us." Jax pulled Keesha closer to him and she glanced back at him. "It happened rather quickly though, didn't it Hon."

"So fast, I almost didn't even realize." Keesha smiled.

Jax wrapped his arm around her, and Keesha rested her hand on top of his.

"You should really have dinner with me and Stacey. Maybe if she sees you two together, she will let go of her silly crush on you."

"That would be fine...if you don't mind." Jax looked down at Keesha again.

"Anything you want."

"Great. We'll see you at the dining room, at 8:00."

"We'll be there." Jax agreed.

"Your rooms Sir..."

"Rooms?" Ryan looked over at the attendant who suddenly appeared.

"You're mistaken." Jax looked at the attendant. "One...room."

"But..."

"No, buts. ONE room."

"Yes, Sir."

Ryan shook his head as the attendant walked away. "You just can't get good help these days."

"Okay...how do we get out of this one?"

Jax closed the door to their hotel room. "We don't...I mean...if you don't mind..."

Keesha sighed. "You've done so much for me...how can I say no to you. However, I have nothing to wear...neither do you..."

Jax shrugged that off dismissively. "I'll get us something. Just in, and out...and then I can close this deal-okay?"

"You know...never mind." Keesha giggled. "I'm going to shower."

"What's so funny."

"I can't believe myself sometimes."

Jax went to the phone, picking it up. "Believe?" Jax started to dial, his mind working overtime as he tried to plan the best way to bring up business during their dinner.

"Looking at you, I definitely understand how a woman would hold her company hostage for a date with you."

Jax froze, he glanced over-just catching as Keesha shut the bathroom door, leaving him alone in the main room.

Whoever invinted zippers that went all the way down the back should be shot, Keesha decided as she realized she just couldn't reach any further.

How much was this dress anyway? Her mind continued to race, racking up the amount of money she figured she owed Jax for all his help.

She was going to pay him back if it was the last thing she ever did...

She passed the mirror in the bedroom, looking at herself.

She had swept her hair up, but now she was thinking she should have worn it down...

Her mind continued to clutter...

All as a defense mechanism.

Keeping her mind occupied on things like money, and dresses, and hair kept her from focusing on Jax...and her growing feelings for him.

How that ever happened, she never would know.

But as she had listened to him talking so freely in the car, she realized just how much her feelings for this man had grown...over merely a day.

Last night she realized she could not sleep with Jax and then walk away.

But talking to him Keesha realized...walking away from Jax was going to be virtually impossible anyway.

What she told Ryan had not been a lie.

Her feelings for Jax were growing quickly, so much so she almost didn't realize it was happening...

Keesha sighed, moving away from the mirror and going over to the bedroom door. She knocked.

In the den area of the hotel room, Jax put on his dinner jacket. He walked over to the mirror next to the vanity. "Come in!"

Jax heard the door open, but then there was absolute silence.

Keesha blinked, totally in awe as she stared at Jax.

How could anyone manage to just become more and more handsome as seconds passed...

Finally she found her voice. "Can you help me?"

Jax turned away from the vanity and walked over to the door.

"I can't reach all the way..." Keesha explained turning around.

Jax froze in the doorway, his eyebrow arching as his eyes slowly travelled the length of her.

"Amazing..." he whispered, admiring her curves...the bare skin of her back seemed to call his mouth...his mind begging his lips to kiss it.

"You look...just..." Jax actually found himself speechless.

"Unfinished." Keesha peaked over her shoulder at him. "Can you..."

Jax shook his head.

Bad time. he kept reminding himself. He could not get any more attached to Keesha, because their being together would be completely impossible-given the kind of trouble she was in. He moved closer. In one quick movement he finished zipping her dress.

"Wow...perfect fit. How did you do that?"

"I've studied your body for an entire day now."

Keesha laughed. "There you go again, changing the subject." she turned around to face Jax.

And her smiled instantly faded as the pure, unadulterated desire Jax held for her darkened his eyes.

Keesha stared at Jax as he reached out, touching her face lightly. He wanted to kiss her...never before had he wanted anything so badly...

Jax stepped closer and Keesha's heart raced uncontrollably.

But if he kissed her now, he would never, ever be able to stop.

He would never, ever, be able to let her go.

Keesha looked down as Jax bent slightly, drawing her near...

Keesha opened her eyes, finding Jax's waiting-and they gazed at each other. She reached out, touching his lips with her fingertips. They parted slightly...waiting...

And finally a ringing reached their ears.

Jax sighed...yet said a silent thankful preayer. "Phone." he whispered.

Keesha let go, nodding. She watched as he walked over. "Yes."

"It's about time you picked up," Ryan said.

"Sorry, I was distracted." Jax looked over at Keesha again. "...we're on our way down." he hung up.

Keesha took a deep breath. She held out her hand.

Jax walked over, taking it slowly. She led him towards the bedroom door.

Keesha stopped at the mirror, suddenly thoughts on what to do with her hair filled her mind once more-

Trying to push away the feel of Jax's warm breath tingling across her lips...

"What?"

"I'm thinking of taking my hair down..."

Jax stared at Keesha through their reflection in the mirror. He stepped closer behind her.

Keesha closed her eyes with a sigh as Jax placed a small kiss on the back of her neck. He ran his hands down her bare arms.

He inhaled the scent of her..."Leave it..." he mumbled before forcing himself away.

Keesha watched as Jax moved past her, holding open the door.

And without another word, they left.
