Chance Encounters: Chapter 2

Keesha forced herself to continue staring out the window.

Though she had this intense urge...she leaned over, peaking from behind the chair in front of her.

Jax kept looking to the ground. Keesha was watching him, he could tell. How long should he let this go on?

"Wow," Keesha mumbled. She had to admit, never in her entire life, had she seen such a...perfect looking man. "Stop staring." she muttered to herself.

But she couldn't help it. It was almost as if she couldn't get enough of looking at him. He was just too lovely for words.

Long enough, Jax decided. Slowly he tilted his head over, his eyes catching Keesha's.

Keesha gazed, stunned, but she still couldn't force herself away.

A crooked smile teased his lips, only to grow, lighting up his face as he gave her a quick wink.

Keesha sat up, taken aback. Not so much by his actions,

But at those damn butterflies that kept raging through her stomach as she looked at him.

Keesha cleared her throat, managing to roll her eyes at Jax for effect. She leaned back into her seat, looking out the window.

Keesha ate her fries, trying to get another sip of cola from her cup. The bus driver had pulled into the station to fuel, and she had watched as Jax got off the bus.

She hadn't seen him since. And that was almost an hour ago.

Obviously he had headed back home-wherever his home was.

She sighed, she had to admit...he was kind of fun. The man had spent the evening following her, and even had the nerve to travel this far on the bus.

"Very cute," she admitted to herself. "Psycho. But cute."

"That's the second time you've mentioned how cute I am."

Keesha froze at the soft voice behind her. It couldn't be...

She turned around. "Why are you still following me?" she asked Jax, a small part of her wondering if the psycho part of her statement was the more truthful.

Jax's eyes shined, and she realized, insane or not, the man was definitely more attractive then anything.

"Because this is the middle of nowhere. And I am extremely bored in the middle of nowhere. You however, are far from boring." Jax looked away from Keesha, sticking his hands in his pockets as he looked up at the night sky. "Though it is rather beautiful," he admitted, somewhat in awe of the clarity.

Keesha stared at Jax. Beautiful was an excellent word to use...this man was absolutely...

She shook her head. What was she thinking.

"You never told me where we were going."

"The middle of nowhere."

Jax laughed.

"So unless you want to be bored out of your mind, maybe you ought to turn back and take your admittedly cute self home."She started to walk away.

"Third time!" Jax called. "I think you like me."

Keesha shook her head again, rolling her eyes as she climbed back on the bus.

"You know..." Jax slid into the seat next to Keesha. "I think I like sitting back here better."

"Okay, look. You really really are a very..." Keesha struggled.

"Cute?" Jax offered with a teasing smile.

"That doesn't do you justice." she admitted.

Jax pretended to be taken aback, he leaned away from her. "Why thank you." he said slowly.

"But I really...really...don't have the time or the energy for this. I have places to go..."

"...people to see." Jax sung. "Like, husband maybe?"

"If I say yes, will you go away."

Jax pretended to think. "No." he admitted with a laugh.

"That's great to know. Gorgeous..."

"Thank you."

"With absolutely no morals."

"Hey! I have morals. But, I also would not choose to..." Jax leaned closer to Keesha, and she found herself becoming lost in his eyes. "...deny myself of you, just because of some man who you're running from."

Keesha's eyes flashed. "A, Jonathan is not my husband."

"Great."

"And am not running from him...per se. Why am I talking to you?" she finished, mainly to herself.

"Because you like me."

"You really are annoying...but even so, I am going to give you a warning. You really don't want to have anything to do with me right now. Because I am in a lot of trouble..."

"Gathered." Jax smiled, looking away from her for a moment. He blinked as she touched his chin lightly.

Keesha led his face back to hers once more. "I am in a lot of trouble. You should stay far away from me." she warned seriously. "Understand?" she hoped quietly.

Jax continued gazing into Keesha's eyes. "You know...you really are the most beautiful woman I have ever seen." he admitted.

Keesha groaned, pulling her hand away from his face. "That's it...I'm so done." she looked out the window.

"And you're also the only woman I know who would get offended at a compliment." Jax stared ahead once more, pulling the pack of cards he had bought from his pocket.

Keesha mumbled something and Jax looked at her once more. "What?"

"I said, thank you." she repeated as she continued looking out the window.

Jax sighed, bored with solitaire. He glanced over at Keesha. "So...what kind of trouble are you in?"

Keesha looked over at him and Jax prepared himself for some snide remark. "Jonathan is a lawyer I trusted, I shouldn't have, now he's after me."

"Lawyer huh?"

"Do you believe a word I just said?"

"For some strange reason, yes," Jax realized.

"Hm..." Keesha broke eye contact. "My cousin, who is more like a brother really...is a mob lawyer...or ex I should say, but he has...things...and I gave them to Jonathan. And let's just say I shouldn't have."

"Why did you?"

"Because my cousin told me to. Though my instincts told me not to."

"So there's this kind of trouble, and you're sharing it with me?"

"Instincts tell me I can trust you. I realized that in the garage." Keesha finally looked over at Jax once more. "Even though you are rather nosy," she finished.

"Someone who trusts her instincts. I like that in a woman."

"Nosy and aggravating and not knowing when to throw in the towel."

"Do you believe in love at first sight?"

"Oh, how cheesy can you get?" Keesha laughed.

Jax smiled, winking at her, and once again those damn butterflies raged through her stomach.

And her laughter stopped. She watched as Jax slid down somewhat in his chair, closing his eyes.

In a moment, he was fast asleep.

"Stop staring," she chastised herself again.

But yet again, she couldn't help it. She truely couldn't get enough of looking at him.

"Wake up Sir."

Jax yawned, looking around.

"We're going to stay here for five hours. There's a hotel right here for..."

Jax looked around. "Keesha?" he called, standing. "Excuse me..." he mumbled, pushing his way past the bus driver.

Jax got outside, looking around. No sign.

She managed to slip him. Jax shook his head, "Okay...I found her once..." he mumbled, walking into the hotel.

Keesha tossed some money on the counter. "Room for one." she spoke quickly. She had made it off that bus before Jax even woke up, and at the pace the bus driver was moving, waking passangers, maybe she could be long gone before he even realized.

She was almost at the state line anyway.

"Also, if anyone, and I mean *anyone* comes looking for me, you never saw me, got it?" Keesha tossed some more money on the table.

She was running out of cash already...but she had to get away from Jax.

For his safety...and her peace of mind.

It was too hard to focus with him around.

The attendant nodded, handing Keesha a key.

"Can I help you?"

Jax walked up to the attendant. No sign of her at that one hotel, maybe she would be here. "Yes, I'm looking for my wife."

"Your wife?"

"Yes...well..." Jax leaned on the counter, looking at the attendant. "She's kind of mad at me right now. You know how women are."

The attendant laughed. "That I do. What did you do?"

"Forgot her birthday."

"Bad..."

"Well, I didn't really forget. Actually, she only thinks that. See, her gift, wasn't ready yet...but I wanted to surprise her, so...you know how women are."

"That I do," the attendant laughed once more. "We've only had a few check ins. Though, the people don't seem like your type...unless you're into older women."

Jax laughed. "Nope, she's about my age. Amazingly beautiful, small, African American..." Jax realized he had hit the jackpot as the guy shifted slightly.

"Sorry. No one here matches that descrption."

Jax shrugged. "Thanks." The attendant watched as Jax left the hotel.

Keesha got out of the tub, wrapping the towel around her body.

There was a knock on her door. "Room service!"

"I didn't order anything!" Keesha called.

Jax leaned up from the other side of the door. "Compliments of the front desk!" he called, once again using his American accent.

Free food? What was it and these odd men she was meeting. One followed her across the state and now the attendant was sending up free food.

It was free though. She walked over to the door, looking through the peep-hole. "I am going to kill him!" she exclaimed as Jax waved.

"Open the door..." Jax called.

To his surprise, she did. "Get inside." she ordered, pulling him in and slamming the door shut.

Jax stood behind Keesha, watching as she ran her fingers through her still wet hair as she thought. A drop of water eased down and Jax's eyes followed it's slow fall down the middle of her back. He let out a low whistle, in complete awe of her form.

But Keesha didn't notice. All she could think was that if Jax was able to find her so easily...maybe she was understimating Jonathan, maybe he was watching her all this time...

A chill went through Keesha's body and she rubbed her arms, her mind racing.

"Hey." Jax touched her shoulder and Keesha jumped. "Whoa...okay...are you all right?" he asked seriously.

"No. Look, you really have got to get out of here." Keesha went into the bathroom, shutting the door.

"You obviously need help..." Jax called from the other side of the door. "And trust me, I can help you..."

When Keesha threw open the door once more, she was already dressed. "Maybe you can..." she admitted. "But I have enough problems worrying about my life, I really don't want to have to worry about yours..."

"Keesha..."

Keesha breezed past Jax, slipping on her shoes.

"It was really...nice." She had to admit. "...meeting you. But, do yourself a favor, stop following me." she ran past him, opening the door.

Keesha gasped, shutting the door quickly. "Oh God..."

"Oh God what? He's here?" Jax reasoned.

Keesha nodded. She looked down, trying to think...

Suddenly there was a banging on her door. "Oh God..." she whispered again.

"Hey..." Jax bent, looking into her eyes. "You will be fine. Okay? Trust me on this..." Jax led Keesha to the bathroom, shutting the door. Jax threw off shirt, leaving his chest bare. He mussed his hair. "What!"

She heard Jax call outside.

She closed her eyes, praying her instincts were right, that she could trust this man...

"I'm sorry, I'm looking for a woman."

"Aren't we all?" Jax answered Jonathan with a laugh. "None here..." he started to close the door.

"But I could have sworn I saw her."

Keesha opened her eyes, though her prayer continued.

"Good for you...look...Mr..."

"Christophers."

"Christophers," Jax stated dismissively. "The only person here is me...and I have to get up in three hours. I have a business deal to close...and really, I need to be rested. So stop all the pounding on the doors, looking for some woman, because you're giving me a headache."

"But..."

"Do you want to come in, will that make you happy?" Jax opened the door wider. "Come on..."

Jonathan sighed. If he was hiding Keesha...why would this man be hiding Keesha. Jonathan had never seen him before. "Sorry to bother you."

"Great," Jax mumbled, slamming the door.

Keesha waited for a moment. She walked out.

Jax placed his finger on his lips shaking his head. He pointed to the ground. There was still a shadow blocking the light which normally came through the bottom of the door.

Jonathan shook his head once more. Why was he wasting time, standing here.

The shadow disappeared. Jonathan was gone. "Told you." Jax looked up with a smile.

Keesha nodded, walking over to him slowly. He was...

Keesha had to look down at the ground, to sop herself from staring. Lean, yet muscular...Keesha saw his shirt and tossed it to him.

Jax threw it behind him.

Keesha looked up at him. She had to go. "Thank you."

"I told you, I never leave a beautiful woman in distress..."

"I have to go you know. You've done way too much."

Jax didn't answer, and he didn't look as Keesha finished her walk to the door.

"You know what?"

Jax turned at Keesha's question. Keesha took a deep breath, taking one step closer.

Jax closed his eyes as Keesha reached up...

Kissing his cheek lightly. "I'm sorry I misjudged you," she whispered. She opened the door, looking down the hall.

She turned and looked at him once more. "Bye Jax." she smiled.

He winked at her and her smile turned into a soft laugh. "Well, without you around, at least I won't get those butterflies anymore," she admitted.

And with that she was gone.
