32 kai ti eti legw epileiyei me gar dihgoumenon o cronoV peri gedewn barak samywn iefqae dauid te kai samouhl kai twn profhtwn

And what more shall I say? For time will fail me if I tell of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, of David and Samuel and the prophets,

33 oi dia pistewV kathgwnisanto basileiaV eirgasanto dikaiosunhn epetucon epaggeliwn

who by faith conquered kingdoms, performed acts of righteousness, obtained promises,

efraxan stomata leontwn
shut the mouths of lions,

34 esbesan dunamin puroV efugon stomata macairhV edunamwqhsan apo asqeneiaV egenhqhsan iscuroi en polemw parembolaV eklinan allotriwn

quenched the power of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, from weakness were made strong, became mighty in war, put foreign armies to flight.

35 elabon gunaikeV ex anastasewV touV nekrouV autwn
Women received back their dead by resurrection;

alloi de etumpanisqhsan ou prosdexamenoi thn apolutrwsin
and others were tortured, not accepting their release,

ina kreittonoV anastasewV tucwsin
so that they might obtain a better resurrection;

36 eteroi de empaigmwn kai mastigwn peiran elabon eti de desmwn kai fulakhV
and others experienced mockings and scourgings, yes, also chains and imprisonment.

37 eliqasqhsan eprisqhsan en fonw macairhV apeqanon perihlqon en mhlwtaiV en aigeioiV dermasin usteroumenoi qlibomenoi kakoucoumenoi

They were stoned, they were sawn in two, they were tempted, they were put to death with the sword; they went about in sheepskins, in goatskins, being destitute, afflicted, ill-treated

38 wn ouk hn axioV o kosmoV epi erhmiaiV planwmenoi kai oresin kai sphlaioiV kai taiV opaiV thV ghV

(men of whom the world was not worthy), wandering in deserts and mountains and caves and holes in the ground.

39 kai outoi panteV marturhqenteV dia thV pistewV ouk ekomisanto thn epaggelian

And all these, having gained approval through their faith, did not receive what was promised,

40 tou qeou peri hmwn kreitton ti probleyamenou ina mh cwriV hmwn teleiwqwsin

because God had provided something better for us, so that apart from us they would not be made perfect.
