Sp. 4 JOHN WILLIAM GRASER, 19, IS KILLED IN ACTION IN VIETNAM
A Frederick County man who had been listed as missing in action has now been officially listed as killed in action, according to Army sources yesterday.
Sp4 John William Graser, 19, son of William S. Graser and Adelaide E. Graser of 29 Taney Apartments, was killed sometime last month while engaged in a fire fight with hostile enemy forces. Graser was graduated from Thomas Johnson High School in 1967 and entered the army June 30 of that year.
He was assigned to the Republic of Vietnam on 1 January 1968.
At the time of his death he was assigned to Company C, 1st Battalion, 7th Calvary, 1st Calvary Division. It was not reported in which section of Vietnam, Graser was killed.
Besides his parents, he is survived by three brothers, Ronald L. Graser, 29, Taney Apts., William L. Boone, Libertytown and James M. Boone, Hanover, Pa.

Funeral services for Sp4 John William Graser, a casualty of the Vietnam War, who died May 29, will take place Tuesday at 10 a.m. from St. John's Catholic Church, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be sung.
Today at 8 p.m. a Christian Wake Service will be held at the M.R. Etchison & Son Funeral Home at 106 East Church Street. Friends may call at the funeral home today from 3 to 9 p.m.
The veteran will be buried with military honors. Interment will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery.
Surviving are his parents, William S. and Adelaide E. Sappington Graser of 29 Taney Apartment, Frederick; a brother, Ronald Lewis Graser, at home; two step brothers, William Boone of Libertytown and James Boone of Hanover, Pa.

MILITARY FUNERAL IS HELD FOR SP4 JOHN W. GRASER
The funeral of Sp4 John Wm. Graser, who died in Vietnam on May 29, was held Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock from St. John's Catholic Church, where a sung mass of Christian burial was celebrated by the pastor, the Rev. Frederick H. Duke. Assisting at the church and graveside was Chaplain Davis of Fort Detrick. A Christian Wake Service was held Monday evening at 8 o'clock at the M.R. Etchison & Son Funeral Home, 106 East Church St.
Full military honors were accorded the veteran at the graveside by members of Headquarters Company, U.S. Army garrison.Ft. Detrick in charge of NCOIC Sp 5 Richard A. Fugarino. Members of the honor guard were Sp 5 Willis J. Smith, Sp 5 Robert A. Uhrin, Sp 4 Robert C. Switzer, Sp 4 Gary L. Williams, Pfc. Larry E. Bradley, Pfc. William O. Schalla and Pfc. Alton R. Hunter. Escort for the deceased was Sp 4 Charles Warnick.
Pallbearers were Sp 4 Donald R. Mengle, Sp 4 Phillip R. Apffel, Sp 4 Robert J. Sykora, Pfc. George W. Barbato, Pfc. James W. Marquess, Pvt. Jerome F. Haggerty. Bugler was Sp 4 Alan R. Tomer. Interment was in Mount Olivet Cemetery.

Sp. 4 John W. Graser, who was killed in action in Vietnam in May, 1968, has been posthumously decorated for his action against a hostile enemy while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry, 1st Cavalry Division. The posthumous awards were presented to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John S. Graser of 29 Taney Apts., in a ceremony at Fort Detrick Headquarters. Colonel E.M. Gershater, Commanding Officer of Fort Detrick, presented the Air Medal, Army Commendation Medal, and Purple Heart Medal. Also attending the ceremony was Ronald L. Graser (left) brother of the decorated soldier. Sp.4 Graser was a 1967 graduate of Thomas Johnson High School. He entered the Army in June of 1967.-(US Army Photo)
