I am
trying to trace family of my grandfather Frank Herbert.
We had very little information to begin with, only
that he was English and lived in Whitby, Yorkshire England
prior to migrating to New Zealand as a young man in
1910 aged 20.
The information we have from old census records is as
follows:
Herbert - William born 1826 in Whitby, England married
Isabella born 1825.
William was a butcher, had one known brother Mathew
Herbert born in Hawsker, Whitby married with 6 children
in 1891)
Children known:
William Alfred
Isabella born Hawsker, Whitby 186
Thomas Edward born 1872
In 1891 they were living No 3 Grey Street, Ruswarp,
Whitby.
William Alfred, born 1858 in Ruswarp, Whitby Yorkshire.
Butcher, married Emma Sanderson born 1866.
In 1891 they lived at 1 Fishburne Road, Ruswarp. A
servant's name was Annie Palmer.
Children known:
John Sanderson born1888
William Alfred born 1889
Frank born 1890
It is known he had two sisters both unknown and a
younger brother Tom who migrated to NZ after the war.
Frank born 1890 was my grandfather.
It is believed that my grandmother(Charlotte Elizabeth Passfield
known as Lottie) corresponded with a family member for
a number of years.
It is also believed a nephew was a police officer in Whitby.
My grandfather (with arm in sling)
with his brother, my mother believes is Bill, and two
sisters of whom we have no information, believed one
was known as Ellie. My grandfather served in the First
World War with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force and
was posted to France. He was injured and sent to
England to convalesce. This was when this photo was
taken.
A brother (unknown) in army
uniform.
Frank, Charlotte and brother Tom
taken in Hamilton, New Zealand mid to late 1950's.
We would love to hear of any information anyone may have regarding this branch of the Herbert family.
