Montgomery County Police Explorers Information

The Montgomery County Department of Police sponsors Law Enforcement Explorer Post 1986 under the auspices of the Boy Scouts of America. The Police Explorer Program is designed for youth who have a sincere interest in pursuing a career in law enforcement. Post membership is open to young men and women between the ages of 14 and 21 who reside within Montgomery County, are in good physical and mental health, and are involved in an education program-either high school, college, or a continuing education program.

Explorer Post 1986 is administered by a Police Lieutenant assigned to the Department's Special Operations Division. In addition, several other police officers serve as advisors to the Post and assist with training and supervision.

All meetings and training are held at the Police Academy every Wednesday evening, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. During the first year, new members are introduced into the field of law enforcement. Utilizing experts within the Department, a portion of every meeting is devoted to training in the various aspects of police work. After successfully completing one year, the Police Explorer is assigned to a District Station where he or she participates in a Field Experience Program.

Police Explorers are not just observers but actively participate in community affairs to ensure the safety of their families and fellow citizens. Explorers become involved by assisting officers on patrol duty. They perform non-hazardous duties such as assisting with traffic and crowd control at special functions; promoting bicycle safety and registration; crime prevention campaigns; search missions; and miscellaneous community relations functions.

Police Explorers are considered volunteer assistants to police officers. Insurance is provided to cover the Explorers while in training and on details. Most of the uniform and equipment are provided, however, a small portion must be furnished by the individual Explorer.

In addition to law enforcement related duties, the Explorers plan a number of social and recreational activities during the year.

Law Enforcement Exploring has proven to be a good vocational prepatory tool for youth and the nation. Its total membership nationwide numbers approximately 40,000. Several of our Explorers have become sworn Montgomery County Police Officers.
