This UP general freight is dwarfed by the deep valley. This photo was taken looking down from the top of the hill above Tunnel #3.



In the above scenes, smoke pours out of Tunnel #5 as first the lead units and then the mid-train helpers exit the tunnel. This happens on a regular basis as heavy eastbounds fill the hill's longest tunnel with exhaust as they labor up the 2.5% grade.


Westbound BNSF light helpers pass the remnants of Tunnel #4, which was bypassed following restructuring after the devastaing 1952 Tehachapi earthquake.


UP 5813 exits the east portal of Tunnel #3.
