The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn, and provide for those who grieve in Zion— to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair. They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the Lord for the display of his splendor.
– Isaiah 61:1-3 (NIV)
Today’s commentary
by Dave Whitehead, Senior Pastor, GraceNYC.org, Author of Making Sense of the Bible
God is near to those who are hurting. One of the best places to grieve is in the presence of the Lord, because God takes our pain and turns it into something beautiful. Though you may not feel like you can make it, you become a candidate for God’s strength when you are in your weakest condition. It seems that the splendor of the Lord is displayed when praise comes out of despair— when a broken branch becomes a mighty oak— and that can only come from God’s intervention in the midst of our pain.

Now to Him
who is able
to do immeasurably
more than all
we ask or imagine,
according to His power
that is at work within us,
to Him be glory
in the church
and in Christ Jesus
throughout all generations,
for ever and ever! Amen.
Ephesians 3:20-21 NIV
Being confident of this,
that He who began a good work in you
will carry it on to completion
until the day of Christ Jesus.
Philippians 1:6 NIV
"And we know that in all things
God works for the good
of those who love Him,
who have been called
according to His purpose."
-Romans 8:28
“Ah, Sovereign Lord,
You have made the heavens and the earth
by Your great power and outstretched arm.
Nothing is too hard for You.
Jeremiah 32:17 NIV
Surely your goodness and love
will follow me all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house
of the Lord forever."
-Psalm 23:6
My voice You shall hear in the morning,
O LORD; in the morning
I will direct it to You,
and I will look up.
Psalm 5:3
My personal note: Hold on strong because God is forever using everything for our good and His glory and you will thank Him in the end, I know because I was there; in pain and crushed and He has done mighty miracles for me and formed me through it all- I live a better and wholesome life now and there is more to come!
Praises God!
