Sergeant Wolf exhaled another cloud of violet smoke and pulled the collar of his leather jacket together again ‘Ill have to get this altered’ he considered. Hunching his shoulders against the gentle rain, Wolf took another drag from the roll up and glanced at his fellow Sergeant as the top button of the jacket came unstuck again. The Minotaur had a determined look despite the fact he was soaked to the skin, his long amber hair hung in dark clumps and water ran in small streams down his bronze breast plate. Wolf absentmindedly brushed the front of his own breast plate with the back of his leather cuff and considered what Tau’nar would look like in the standard brown leather under armour of the watch, provided they could find enough material for the 8 foot giant. He exhaled again and watched the violet smoke expand and be drawn into swirls by the increasing downpour, he tried to focus on it rather then the scene in the alley he had seen much bloodier things in his life but this had the hallmarks of something that always brought bile to the back of his throat.
The two Sergeants stood at the end of a small alley as the rain tried its best to wash away the smell of blood and sawdust; amber light illuminated the alley held aloft by a watchwomen. Wolf sighed as one of the corporals shuffled against the wall of the temple in an attempt to get out of the rain; he glanced at Tau’nar the Minotaur glanced back with an impassive expression in his dark brown eyes. They looked at each other for a moment expressing silent views about people who thought a rainy night was a hardship. Wolf was about to speak when a blond head popped into view amongst the milling corporals smiling far to much for someone who had just been on all fours next to a corps he picked his way past his fellow officers and made for the sergeants. The corporal approached and didn’t seem to be bothered by the rain, straw like hair plastered to his scalp he walked right up to Wolf without a glance at the other sergeant, Wolf gritted his teeth. Blue eyes stared right past Wolf and at another alley way across the street as the manic grin on the corporal’s face changed and he delivered his report. ‘She was definitely raped alright; I found traces on her… dress. She hasn’t got any jewellery or a purse so there no telling if she was robbed, Sir’ the corporal saluted promptly. Wolf nodded and the corporal darted for the other alley as he started to vomit into a drain Wolf considered the fact the cities forensic team was one man who had seen far too many forensic programs.
The rain began to slacken off the spells that created the weather wouldn’t be needed forever but till the growing planes own weather system was developed enough to refill wells and water plants there would be clock work showers at half past midnight. Wolf glanced down the street as he heard the sound of ill fitting boots on paving stone ‘Of course he would come it’s the only serious crime we have had since… well since the watch started 6 months ago’ part of Wolf said he should be happy about that but then another larger part kept thinking about the alleys non-breathing occupant and what she must have gone through before she died.
Eventually a figure appeared around the streets slow bend it took a few moments for him to reach the sergeants in the time it took Wolf tried vainly to fasten his top button and pushed a stray lock of long black hair behind him. A surprisingly spray middle-aged man stopped in front of Wolf he gave a quick nod to Tau’nar before returning his attention to Wolf. Before he spoke Wolf nodded to the alley were the corporals were crowded.
‘What the hell are you’s two standing in here for!’ Wolf watched his superior inform the two unlucky guardsmen on what to do only pausing to reiterate the instructions in Arnon in case there English wasn’t up to the challenge. Wolf smiled gently but worried about the lack of acknowledgement for his old comrade in arms, he hoped it was only because Jack new him a little more then he did Tau’nar. Commander Jack spent several minuets in the alley with Sasha the female corporal holding the light rod for him.
‘I’ve got those two idiots securing the crime scene properly, you didn’t think of getting Rackhem from stopping the rain tonight? And where’s are crime scene enthusiast?’ he walked towards Wolf again, the voice was a little dry from years of smoking but showed no signs of tiredness from the half mile run he had completed just minuets before.
‘Well I considered sending a runner but there wasn’t enough time, he is a powerful mage and isn’t likely to take kindly to employees of his running in at midnight and Johns over there’ he indicated a shadow bent double in the darkness. Jack let out a angry sigh although it didn’t carry far or show on he’s face both sergeants detected it.
‘Have you got a man...’ Wolf cut his superior off ‘Yes sir most the houses are empty or a brick warehouse there were half a dozen in the temple but didn’t hear anything. One identified the victim as one Rumana Klamire a maid for some parsnip importer’
Jack thought for a moment then turned to the minotaur ‘Stay hear with one of the corporals till I get the mortician out ill send one of the other running for him, Wolf take another one and continue as normal ill see both of you back at the house’.
