Fiver's Chid
- The following are some of my favorite records of all time (in alphabetical order):
-
-
- 808 STATE-"Ex:el" CD-1991 Elektra records (great old rave era record-brings back a flood of good memories. Spanish Heart featuring New Order's Bernard Sumner is a must have for any New Order fan.)
- AIR-Moon Safari CD-1998 Astralwerks (one of the few records that I gave into the hype and bought and turned out to be very surprised. All of their following releases have been on big disappointment, one after another! :(
- A MAN CALLED ADAM-Duende CD-1998 Other Records (the essential chill out Ibiza album. Easter Song says it out "Bringing Me Back to Life", *extra note-just has been reissued domestically by Water Music!!)
- AMORPHOUS ANDROGYNOUS-Tales of Ephidrina CD-1994 Astralwerks (this is the Future Sound of London at their best). I remember hearing Pod Room being played right before New Order took the stage at the Hollywood Bowl.
- AUX 88-"Is it Man or Machine" CD-1996 Direct Beat records (felt like trying to breakdance when I heard this for the first time. Then I realized that I'm about 80 pounds heavier and 15 years older! Great introduction into electro funk, Detroit style!)
- BASMENT JAXX-Rooty CD (one of my favorite relases from the year 2001. Broken Dreams alone is worth the purchase of this CD)
- BAUHAUS-"Burning from the Inside" LP/CD-1983 A&M records/ Beggars Banquet(great farewell LP from one of the 80's gothic bands, the stepping stone for Love & Rockets earlier material),
- BEATLES, THE-Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (this is too obvious!)
- BEACH BOYS, THE-Pet Sounds (thanks Don to introducing me to this amazing release. Brian Wilson is genius. You won't find any surf music hear)
- BELTRAN, JOHN-Earth & Nightfall CD-1994 Apollo records (awesome Derrick May sounding release on R&S/Apollo records)
- BELTRAN, JOHN-10 Days of Blue CD-1996 Peace Frog records (another great chill out CD, more ambient than Earth & Nightfall.*Note: this CD has just been reissued!)
- BLACK DOG, THE-Parallel CD-1994 GPR records) (great mid 90's electronica release with heavy Detroit influences)
- BOLA-Soup CD Skam Records (incredible IDM stuff. Fans of Boards of Canada will love this CD).
- CABARET VOLTAIRE-"The Arm of the Lord" LP/CD-1985 Some Bizzare records (this record paved the way for me to research all of CV's back catalog! "I Want You....to Bow Your Head!"),
- CABARET VOLTAIRE - The Conversation 2x CD (Instinct. Nice departure from the typical Cabs material. This is the blue print for the stuff that Richard H. Kirk would pursue throughout the 90's and beyond!)
- THE CHURCH-Remote Luxury LP/CD-1984 Arista records (great record with nice 12 string melodies here and there. "Into My Hands" brings back memories of my brother working at Y-Que when it was on Melrose)
- CLOCK DVA-Buried Dreams CD (Wax Trax). Of all the Wax Trax releases this is one of the few releases that still sounds good. Very dark electronic music (one of the 1st CDs that was composed strictly on a computer). Lots of samples from various old 1950's Sci-Fi classics throughout. "I'm not afraid of death..........I'm afraid of murder".
- COCO STEEL & LOVEBOMB-New Wolrd LP/CD-1998 Other records (essential counterpart to Man Called Adam's Duende release!)
- COCO STEEL & LOBEBOMB-Sunset CD-1999 Other records (excellent chill out release-thanks Oliver!)
- THE CURE-"Happily Ever After" 2xLP (what better way to combine two of their best LPs?-"Faith" & "Seventeen Seconds". Stand out tracks "Secrets", "M" and "Play for Today"),
- THE CURE-Pornography (1982 A&M). Amazing dark album from the Cure. There are no weak tracks here. The sound on this release still holds up after this release.
- DEPECHE MODE-Speak & Spell LP/CD-1981 Mute Records/ Sire (one of the very cassettes that I bought for my walkman back in '82)
- Dolby, THOMAS-Golden Age of Wireless LP/CD-1982 Capitol records (great nerdy new wave record-I got made fun of a lot when I use to play this record in my house. There are some serious 80's gems like "Europa and the Pirate Twins" and "One of Our Submarines")
- DROWNING POOL-Aphonia* LP/CD-1989 Fundamental/ Save records (this record must be heard to be believed-experimental instrumental indie rock with movie sound bites throughout)
- ECHO & THE BUNNYMEN-"Ocean Rain" LP/CD-1984 Sire records (brings back memories of hearing this played at the Venice beach board walk back in '84. "screaming from beneath the waves")
- EFFECTIVE FORCE-"Illuminate the Planet" CD (MFS 1993). This CD is an an amazing piece of work by Paul Browse (ex-Clock DVA). Complete with samples from Apocolypse Now and The Ninth Configuration.
- EON-"Void Dweller" CD-1991 Columbia records (this CD is one incredible song after another with a special bonus song hidden at the end! "He Who Controls the Spice Controls the Universe!")
- FELT-"Let the Snakes Crinkle Their Heads to Death" LP/CD-1986 Cherry Records (don't the let the name of the LP scare you. This used to get heavy air play on the college radio staions back in the mid-80s. Song for William S. Harvey indeed. Special note Dec. '03: this CD has just been re-issued)
- FOXX, JOHN-Metamatic LP/CD-1980 (20+ years ahead of its time. Incredible ice like sounding new wave record that has inspired many of today's electronica artists. Makes you wonder if Ultravoxx would have reaped the wild wind if John Foxx had stayed on board. Pick up the remastered CD with all those extra tracks, including all the b-sides from this era)
- GLIDE-Space Age Freak Out CD 1997 (this is incredible ambient trippy CD from the Will Seargant of Echo & the Bunnymen! Incredible trippy ambient stuff that recalls the Orb's first LP. What baffles me is that this CD came out in 1997, yet it's a live performance from 1993! If this CD had came out in 1993 it would be talked about for ages. Don't let the live part scare you. It's total stereo and you never hear an audience! They were probably were expecting some Echo songs!)
- GLOVE, THE-Blue Sunshine LP/CD-1985 (great side project from The Cure's Robert Smith and Siouxsie's Steve Seversin-fans of the Cure's Top will love this album)
- HUMAN LEAGUE-"Dare" LP/CD-1981 A&M Records (all around great "new wave" material. There's more to "Don't You Want Me" here. Check out "Seconds" and "Do Or Die". Just has been re-issued with the bonus disc that inludes "the Love & Dancing" album. I accidentally bought the Love & Dancing on cassette before Dare and was confused because the songs were all instrumentals but I loved them so much that I ended up buying Dare!)
- INTERPOL-Turn on the Bright Lights CD 2002-Matador (this just came out last year and I still can't enough of this album! The closest I've heard to sounding like classic Joy Division without trying!)
- JOY DIVISION-"Love Will Tear Us Apart" 12"-1980 Factory Records (probably my favorite song of all time.......just can't function no more)
- JOY DIVISION- "Unknown Pleasures" LP/CD-1979 Factory records ("Disorder" opened a door to a whole new world of music for me/ Martin Hannet produced a masterpiece! the guide finally came and took me by the hand)
- THE KLF-"Chill Out" CD-1991 Wax Trax!/TVT records (very nice for playing at night in a darkened room. I still listen to this on a regular bases. It has stood the test of time! The King even makes an apperance in the ghetto!)
- THE KLF-The White Room Original Soundtrack CD (the "missing link" between the Chill Out album and the official White Room release!)
- THE KLF/ORB-Space CD-1990 (for those lucky enough to have heard this-you do feel like you're traveling through space)
- KRAFTWERK-"Computer World" LP/CD-1981 Capitol records (20 years ahead of its time!)
- LOS MACHUCAMBOS-"Percussive Latin Trio" LP-1963 Phase 4 records (Phase 4 stereo recording at its best with traditional latin songs played beautifully from the early 60's. Also one of the records that was listened to a lot by my dad)
- LUSTMORD-Heresy CD. This release is amazing. It makes me think of what the world sounded like before we took over and how it will sound once nature has reclaimed it. The CD is filled with disturbing roars of what sound like gigantic wild beast and in the distance you hear rumblings of what may be volcanic activity or what could be an oncoming storm set to wipe us out! I recommend listening to this in the dark-turn off your tv-turn off your cell phone. Let your mind be free! I'm happy to announce that this CD has been recently remastered and re-released! Pick it up wherever you can!
- LUSTMORD - The Place Where the Black Stars Hang.
- MODEL 500-"Classics" CD-1998 (was lucky enough to find this on my visit to Germany. Classics is an understatement for this collection of Juan Atkins material. This now has been re-issued and is pretty easy to find. Stand out tracks "The Chase" and "Ocean to Ocean")
- MOODSWINGS-Horizontal 2xCD Water Music records 2002 (amazing lush ambient stuff! lot of steel guitar that makes you feel like you're sleeping on the beach of some distant tropical Island. Even Johnny Marr from the Smiths lends some guitar that doesn't distract from the music. Very cool!)
- NEW ORDER-"Power, Corruption, and Lies LP/CD-1983 Factory records (features "Age of Consent", one of my all time favorite songs!)
- NEW ORDER-Technique CD-1989 Factory records/Qwest (this one connects the dots between Derrick May's and Juan Atkin's Detroit sound, just listen to Model 500's "The Chase" and "Ocean to Ocean" and make the connection)
- THE ORB-"Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld" CD-1991 Big Life/Island (US or UK version, take your pick, both versions are essential listening)
- PINK FLOYD-"Dark Side of the Moon" LP/CD-1972 Capitol records (Thanks to my big bro for playing the hell of this record when I was a kid. This record still sounds great after all these years-I highly recommend picking up the recent making of the LP DVD)
- PLACID ANGLES (John Beltran)-The Cry CD Peacefrog 1997 (just got the re-issue of this from Forced Exposure! amazing CD that fits between Beltran's "Earth & Nightfall" & "10 Days of Blue" releases!
- PSYCHIC TV-"Peak Hour" LP/CD-1991 Topy records (Peak Hour says it all, after this release PTV went downhill very fast)
- SCHULZ, C.-Film Ton CD 1993 Extreme records (this an amazing hauntingly beautiful CD. A soundtrack for a movie that does not exist, except in the mind of Schulz. If you like SPK's Graeme Revelle's Songs for Byzantine Flowers, you'll love this!)
- SECTION 25-"From the Hip" LP/CD-1985 Factory records (great cover to suit and awesome records from an incredible Factory band. Thanks to John Segura for introduing this record to my life. Stand out tracks "Inspiration" and "Reflection". Recently re-issued with a gang of extra tracks)
- SHERMAN, BIM - Miracle CD (Mantra. beautiful reggae record. all acoustic material featuring Skip McDonald and Doug Wimbish from Tackhead. RIP Bim Sherman. thanks for a beautiful album).
- SKINNY PUPPY-"Remission" EP/CD-1984 Nettwerk records (dark electronic music only for those who know....)
- THE SMITHS-"Hatful of Hallow"-doulbe LP/CD-1985 Rough Trade records (if you want to buy one Smiths release this is the one to get. Just put it on a cloudy day and we can all relate to at least one of the songs)
- SOFT CELL-"Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret" LP/CD-1981 Some Bizzare/ Sire records (this record exposed me to the new wave movement. Also brings back memories of hearing "Sex Dwarf" at Marilyn's in Pasadena growing up. Side note: the Non-Erotic Video collection has finally been re-issued on DVD)
- SPK-"Zamia Lehmanni-Songs of Byzantine Flowers" LP/CD-1986 Side Effekts records (this is the closest I've come to getting my hands on the soundtrack to Dead Calm, hauntingly beautiful music. Graeme Revell's best work ever!
- TACKHEAD-"Gary Clail's Tackhead Tape Time"* LP/CD-1987 Nettwerk records (let's face it, if you listen to the instrumentals of these tracks they don't have that kick that Clail's voice adds)
- THE THREE O'CLOCK-"16 Tambourines" LP/CD-1984 Frontier records (incredible psychedelic record from the early 80s. Thanks to Seamus for introducing this record to my listening pleasure)
- TIPSY-Trip Tease CD-1998 Asphodel records (this CD made me look up works by Esquivel, M. Denny, L. Baxter to see how this modern day classic came to be)
- TONES ON TAIL-Album Pop LP-1984 Beggars Banquet (from "Bela Lugosi's Dead" to "Twist". This record takes off where Bauhaus' Burning from the Inside left off!)
- TRANSMAT/RELICS compilation LP/CD-1992 Buzz records (electronic music that brings tears to my eyes. Derrick May and Carl Craig at their best. still looking for the original! Special note Dec. 2003: This has just been re-issued on vinyl! woo-hooh! now, only if the CD version would get re-issued!)
- Transmitting from Heaven* CD-Exist Dance compilation-1993 Exist Dance records (this compilation CD made me happy to know that some locals from L.A. put this out, incredible journey through sound)
- YOUNG AMERICAN PRIMITIVE-s/t CD-1994 Zoe Majick records (this is a must own chill out record from the early 90's)
- WOOB-1194 CD (there is a reason that this CD is well sought after. Incredible ambient world music that will have you tripping. I hope they re-issue it for everyone that has not able to get their own copy!

Favorite electronica / electro/ ambient tracks

- AFRIKA BAMBAATAA & SOULSONIC FORCE-"Planet Rock"
- AMORPHOUS ANDROGYNOUS-"Mountain Goat" and "Pod Room" (Tales of Ephidrina is incredible track for track)
- ANGEL, DAVE-"Artech" (this track is amazing. Listening to it build up is awesome. It never looses pace)
- ANGEL, DAVE-"Original Man" (another awesome song from the era of "Artech". Long live Rotation Records)
- ANGEL, DAVE-"Endless Motions" (R&S-these early Angel tracks are awesome. If you like Detroit techno pick up Classics on R&S)
- APHEX TWIN-"On" (hands down-my favorite Richard James track)
- BT-Flaming June "Paul Van Dyk mix" (I played the hell out of this track when I first heard it but it's lost its magic now! :(
- COLDCUT-"Autumn Leaves" Irresistible Force mix (a jaw dropping essential ambient mix that brings tears to my eyes)
- CYBOTRON (Juan Atkins)-"Clear"
- HASHIM-"Al Naa-fysh" (the Soul)
- LARKIN, KENNY-"Soul Man" (R&S)
- MAY, DERRICK-"A Relic Long Ago" (I wish this short track would never end. Just glad to hear the full version off the Transmat Relics comp)
- MAY, DERRICK-"Strings of Life" (a landmark house track)
- MODEL 500 (Juan Atkins)-"The Chase" (every mix of this track I've heard is incredible)

- ORB, THE-"Little Fluffy Clouds", "Perpetual Dawn" and "Loving You" (all landmark chill out tracks)
- ORBITAL-"Belfast" & "Halcyon"
- PLANET PATROL-"Play at Your Own Risk" (12" mix)

- TEKNOTIKA-"Interview with an Alien" (awesome track that samples the old Outer Limits "Galaxy Being")
- TRANQUILITY BASS-"Cantamilla" (pioneer down tempo track)
-
- unofficial live & obscurities that I've come across and highly recommend for die hard fans!!
- CURE, THE-Dr. Robert & Mr. Smith CD (excellent collection of very early (Easy) Cure material combined with all kinds of odds & ends up until 1981. This CD combined with Play for Radio is all you need for the early Cure material!)
- CURE, THE-Imaginary Songs (2 excellent live show from 1979/1980. A trip to hear Robert announce Jumping Someone Else's Train as a brand new single! The 2 versions of Another Journey by Train are killer!).
- CURE, THE-Sydney 1980 CD/LP (great radio show that captures the Cure between the Boys Don't Cry and 17 Seconds era).
- CURE, THE-Play for Today CD (live May 24, 1980 in the Netherlands. Even better quality than Sydney and has more obscure tracks like "A Reflection")
- CURE, THE-Unplugged and More CD (CDLC001: I skip the MTV unplugged tracks and head right to the Belgium radio show! Excellent tracks from 17 Seconds and Faith. One of the best quality live shows I've heard by the Cure).
- CURE, THE-Pornography Tour CD (Paris June 7, 1982: I don't know why this CD is rated so bad on the Stiff as Toys website but it's one of the better live shows I've heard from these early years. The Pornography tracks are performed a little faster than their studio versions which is pretty cool. Overall the sounds is good despite some glitches between tracks, bad editing).
- CURE, THE-Play for Radio CD (Just picked this up yesterday and I'm happy to have all these BBC sessions on 1 Disc. Can't understand why Primary and Holy Hour sounds so bad yet All Cats are Grey from the same sessios sounds very good. I think the versions of Grinding Halt are recorded at the correct speed. I've heard some super high pitch recordings like the ones features on the 2xLP Fading Roots.
- CURE, THE-The Top demos LP (this is a must have for fans of the Top album. Very raw versions of tracks off the Top including Happy the Man which appeared as a b-side!)
- CURE, THE-Difficult to Cure CD (Beech-Martin 018 live Birmingham UK 1988: excellent quality. Nice to finally hear a presentable live version of Like Cockatoos! Charlotte Sometimes and Japanese Dream are killer on this show).
- DEPCHE MODE-Circuits '80-'82 2xCD (excellent early DM shows that have them performing a lot of material that didn't even make its way to Speak & Spell!!!)
- INTERPOL-Radio Sessions CD (Peel Sessions - KCRW - KEXP: Interpol sounds just as good live on the radio as they do on record.)
- JOY DIVISION-Warsaw LP/CD (a must have for any JD fan. To hear what might have happed if RCA had gone with this demo LP by JD. It would have been disastrous. Most of the versions are pale compared to the Martin Hannett produced jams. Just listen to that super slow version of Transmission and you'll know what I mean. I do like No Love Lost and Ice Age on this release. Very bouncy stuff!)
- DIGITAL GLASS CD (an excellent combination of the Warsaw LP & the Picadilly Radio sessions! To hear Atmospher aka "Chance" with different lyrics is haunting. "Something Must Break" sounds spooky as hell too.
- JOY DIVISION-Amsterdam CD (live Holland 1980: this is my all time favorite live recording by JD-excellent set list and stereo soundboard quality. Factory should have cleaned this up and put this on Still)
- KRAFTWERK-Virtu Ex Machine CD (live Tokyo 1981: fans of Computer World must own this. Hearing Kraftwerk play this live makes you believe that Computer World was no fluke!)
- NEW ORDER-Radio Order LP (1981 Stockholm radio broadcast. Excellent early serious New Order material. Here they still sound like Joy Division!)
- SKINNY PUPPY-Fractal Zoom (live Germany 1986: excellent soundboard show catching Skinny Puppy at their prime. All the essential early stuff is here in its glory)
- SOFT CELL-Science Fiction Stories CD (1980 demos. Whenever I play this to fans of Soft Cell I usually see a look of horror and surprise. The song material on these demos is light years away from "Tainted Love/ Where Did Our Love Go?". These songs are dark and twisted. Just listen to Marc Almond's twisted lyrics for the Sound of Music!
- STROKES, THE-The Strokes are On Pills 2xCD (3 excellent live shows spread out over 2 discs. The Strokes sound tight live)
- U2-Another Time Another Place CD (the early demos 1978/79: wow! there's a lot of stuff here that I don't recognize. Excellent quality!).
-
- the first 7" single I bought was in 1984-Kraftwerk's Trans Europe Express (German Import)
- first vinyl LP I bought was in 1984 THE CURE-Boys Dont' Cry.
Wants list..... I'm looking for the following LPs and CDs (nice reproductions would do): MODEL 500-The Chase 12" (Transmat or Koolkat pressing, I bought the re-issued a few years ago brand new only to find that my copy was pressed on bad quality vinyl and has scuffs galore! :(, AUX 88-Bass Magnetic 2x 12" EP (Direct Beat), TRANSMAT RELICS Comp CD (Buzz Records, vinyl has been re-issued! + a huge thank you to Fre in Belgium with hooking me up with a copy of this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!), THE CURE-Cold 2xCD (live in D.C. 1984), THE CURE-Play for Radio CD, KRAFTWERK-Technopop demo LP, SOFT CELL-live at the Futurama 1980, BOCHUM WELT-Desktop Robotics CD/2x12" LP (Rephlex), PLACID ANGELS (John Beltran, this has just been re-issued)-The Cry CD (Peace Frog records), FAD GADGET-Fireside Favorites CD, ANTHONY ROTHER-Trans Europa Express 12" (Thanks again to Dave in the Bay Area for letting me borrow this!), WOOB 2 CD (EM:T, finally got a copy of this!), GANG OF FOUR-Complete Peel Sessions, SPK-In Flagrante Delico 12" (just found this!), any live (soundboard or radio broadcast) from New Order, The Cure (1977-1986), Bauhaus, Killing Joke, Echo & the Bunnymen (1979-1987), The Church, Abecedarian, Kraftwerk, Soft Cell, Anthony Rother.................................................................................................................................................................
