Okay, this is my first attempt at a fanfic, so please no flames! I know I mixed up the dub and Japanese versions of some things, but it was in an attempt to separate the main characters (plus I’ve read so many fics that words like odango just keep popping into my head) The usual disclaimer applies- I don’t own Sailor Moon....although I wish that I did!..but I DO own this story. So please don’t steal it or my character ideas. If you like this story, I’d love some feedback at: sailor_mercury@crystal-tokyo.com Two In A Million. By Fyreswitch. Chapter One~ Me Myself and I Satine sat facing her open window, her chin resting on her hands thoughtfully. In the distance below, she could hear her sister Riana singing along to the soundtrack to Miss Conginality which Satine had bought her for her twellfth birthday. "Your one in a million..." the candy pink haired ‘idol’ sang off-key. Satine groaned aloud, this was the fifteenth time today she had heard this song- pushed to the limits of her tolerance, she stood up, stretched and grabbed her coat. "I’m going back to my apartment" she called to her mother as she picked up her keys from the kitchen table. Satine avoided her mother’s annoyed gaze sheepishly. "You promised that you would stay for her birthday Sass" her mother argued, shaking the spoon she had been using to mix the icing for Riana’s birthday cake under the nose of her eldest daughter. "I know I know..." Satine grimaced as Riana hit another high note (sounding not unlike Luelle, Satine’s black cat, when Riana trod on her tail by accident) "But I don’t think I can take any more of this" "Don’t look at me" her mother shrugged "Your father and I bought her a bicycle for her birthday....but no. You had to go and encourage that idle fantasy" "Don’t you mean idol fanstasy" Satine joked, earning the wrathful stare of her mother. "Kidding...kidding" Satine muttered, "I have an assignment to finish for university anyway-" she quickly kissed her mother on the cheek and flew out the door before her mother could say another word. Satine almost blushed when she justifyed her exit to herself as she drove back to her apartment on the west side of the city. "I do have an assignment. Darien will be dissapointed if I haven’t written up that case study on Mrs Winters he asked for." Satine was in her second year of medical college, and Darien- her boyfriend- was an intern at Juuben hospital, having finished his degree a 18 months ago. Part of Satine’s coursework involved experience in the hospital. Although obviously not qualified to deal with patients, the students were each assigned to a doctor to learn about the healthcare system. It was supposed to prepare the graduates for their working lives once they finished college. It came as a great surprise that Satine had been allocated Darien as her supervisor. They had to work very hard to keep their relationship a secret from the staff of both the university and the hospital. If they were found out, Darien risked his job and Satine risked being thrown out of her course. But the love that had developed during the Age of Sailor Moon (as Satine liked to refer to it as) was too strong to deny, and so the two remained together- as their future selves would when the age of Crystal Tokyo came about. "Hello...? Anybody home?" Satine asked as she stepped into her apartment, brushing snow from her coat and turning on the gas heater. She wasn’t really expecting Darien home for another two or three hours, he’d be on call. "Meiow" a voice answered from the kitchen. Satine grinned, ex-human or no, Luelle still needed Satine more than she would have ever admitted. "Coming kitty" she called, walking to the door of the kitchen. Satine gasped in horror- there where she expected to find blue linoleum- instead she found herself staring into inky blackness. A shape emerged, bathed in violet light.... "Pluto....?" she stammered, "What the-" Satine started, as the tall senshi grabbed her arm and pulled her into the blackness.... It took a moment for Satine to realise that she had closed her eyes, expecting a flash of light or an impact with something...when it didn’t come, she slowly opened her eyes and found herself standing in front of the timegate. Satine looked again. It was the time gate wasn’t it? Pluto guarded little else. "Pluto, where am I? Is something wrong? The negaverse? Chaos? The Black Moon Family?" Satine demanded, examining the gate with closer intensity. Strange symbols decorated the border, symbols which seemed to move as you looked at them. "No." Pluto raised her hand for Satine to be quiet. "I don’t know." She said simply. Satine raised one eyebrow, "Are you lonely or something?" she whispered, not wanting to upset the Senshi. "No." Pluto sighed, "I have been asked-" she paused, looking to Satine who was patiently awaiting her response, "- I have been asked to offer assistance to another dimension. In particular- your help." She finished. Satine frowned, this was not what she wanted to hear. Satine thought she had finished fighting for a good long while, and was not at all enthusiastic about taking it up again- especially for a completely different dimension. "Tell me about this dimension" she muttered "And why they cannot defend themselves" "To each dimension two great powers are born. One of good, and one of evil. Counterbalanced exactly." Pluto explained, with the emphasis on ‘exactly’. "So you’re telling me that evil is-" Satine’s throat constricted. "As powerful as you are, yes." Pluto put her hand on Satine’s shoulder, "But do not worry. The very choatic nature of evil is such that they cannot ever remain in power for long periods of time, the spirit of creation would never allow it." Pluto paused again, wondering if Satine would ever realise that she had just heard one of the best-kept secrets in the universe. "And so- to your dimension, your enemies are of equal and opposing strength, just as the enemies in the other dimension are in proportion to those who represent good in the dimension. But.." Pluto’s voice chocked for a moment before she continued, "Someone has altered that balance. An enemy from a stronger dimension has entered a weaker one. They threaten to upset the balance entirely. I do not know how they mangaged it, I can only assume one with great power and even greater evil sent them. Will you help this dimension Satine?" Pluto pleaded gently. Satine’s mind was a mess of emotions- but finally it was something said long ago which decided her fate. "When I became Sailor Moon, champion of Love and Justice I swore I would never let an innocent suffer at the hands of evil when it was within my power to stop it...Even if it means...travelling to another dimension" she cried softly, accepting Pluto’s plea. "Can I at least say goodbye?" she asked Pluto shook her head, "Mankind is not yet ready for the idea of alternate dimensions. I cannot allow you to expose them. You may even risk yourself in the process." Satine let a tear fall across the cheek, nodding. After all, who would believe this story? A small voice inside her replied *Darien would believe you.* Satine sniffed, but resolutely refused to cry. *No.* she thought *Darien would try to stop me.* And with that thought, she stepped through the doorway Pluto had lit with her staff. Satine blinked, the same swirling blackness cirlced around her. Looking around she saw that Pluto still stood next to her, staff in hand. "I thought..." Satine started "You have changed dimensions" Pluto smiled, "Welcome to my dimension. Although I am known as Sailor Pluto- just as my....twin...is in your dimension, my christian name here is Setsuna. Not Serena, like the Sailor Pluto of your dimension. Here, Sailor Moon has that name." Satine’s mind whirled, when Pluto had told her there were other dimensions...she expected the differences to be great. A force of good so like her own? Another Sailor Moon? And the others too? Without realising, Satine swayed on her feet causing Pluto to reach out an steady the slender woman before her. "This must be a great shock to you I know. But there *are* differences, you must hold onto those. Remember your own dimension" Satine nodded. "What do you need me for...Plu...Setsuna?" she asked, not willing to associate anything in this dimension with her own. "Come Satine, behold Earth in the 21st century. Those which we seek to remove are hidden from my power- hidden from all powers in this dimension. The only ones who can sense them are those from the same dimension" "Then why me? I fought the evil in my dimension long ago- these are not from my world!" Satine insisted. Setsuna nodded, but her eyes were grave, "There are millions of different dimensions Satine. I chose yours *because* of your success. Your galaxy is currently safe. You are stronger than those of this dimension. But they have the advantage that they *belong* here. Only someone from another dimension can help the senshi of this world harness that power of Belonging. The power to force the evil back to its own dimension" "Can’t you...you know...force them through your door or something?" Satine asked cautiously. "I wish it were that simple. I hardly see the enemy giving me the coordinates of their dimension so I can send them home. And I cannot risk sending them to another dimension, what if it is even weaker than my own?" Satine sighed, knowing she couldn’t reason with the Senshi of Time. Duty was her life. "How will I find them?" she asked before Pluto sent her to Earth. "The Senshi represent the forces of good in this world....if you find them- then the evil will find you...." she called as Satine vanished into the darkness.
