Gun deadline looms
When the clock chimes midnight, the federal government will have no mercy for gun toting Canadians who are balking at the Dec. 31 gun registry deadline. David Austin, spokesman for the Canadian Firearms Centre, said that if the 2.2 million estimated gun owners don't send in their ownership application form by deadline, they could face up to five years in jail. PROTECT APPLICANTS Yesterday the Justice Department announced it would protect until June 30, 2001, those who haven't yet received their firearm ID card if they've applied for one by Dec. 31. Austin said that so far 1.8 million applications have been received. Canadian Alliance MP Cheryl Gallant wrote to Prime Minister Jean Chretien yesterday, urging him to get into the Christmas spirit and extend the Dec. 31 deadline. Gallant said that she's being flooded with calls by worried gun owners, calling for the "misguided piece of legislation" to be scrapped altogether. Previous story: Flin Flon to mine pot underground
