No bail for boxer who did drive-by

By BRENDAN O'HALLARN, COURTS REPORTER
Bail has been denied to a Winnipeg professional boxer accused of a drive-by shooting.

But Ralph "Junior" Moar's lawyer says his client is "categorically" not a member of a gang, as news stories have alleged.

"There are so many people in the community that want Mr. Moar to come home," said lawyer Mike Cook, in applying to have Moar released on a 24-hour curfew at his grandmother's house.

Moar was arrested and charged with attempted murder and unauthorized possession of a firearm after a 15-year-old boy was struck by shots fired from a black Jeep at Burrows Street and Powers Avenue last Wednesday evening.

In yesterday's bail application, Crown attorney Les Kee said Moar fired a semiautomatic pistol into a vehicle, striking the teen behind the ear, opening a cut that required 18 stitches.

But Cook said Moar has been stalked by unknown men for three months since he roughed up several of them in a clash at a local pool hall.

On Dec. 9, Moar and his fiancee were shot at by the unknown stalkers as they entered her apartment block, Cook said. "Unfortunately, instead of going to the police, he decided he'd had enough."

Prior to any pleas being registered with the court, Cook took the unusual step of admitting his client had bought a gun illegally at the Maryland Hotel and fired it into the vehicle that had been following him. But he said Moar meant only to fire warning shots above the truck, not into it.

MOAR'S CAREER DEALT A BLOW

Junior Moar's boxing career is on hold.

Moar, former Canadian amateur middleweight champion, has been suspended indefinitely by the Manitoba Boxing Commission for his role in a fracas at a toughman competition at Le Rendez-Vous Nov. 30.

Moar's corner stepped in after his semifinal match with Richie Goosehead got out of control.

No criminal charges were laid in the incident, but it represents one more blow to Moar's once-promising boxing career.

"This guy's talented but he's wasting it," said Moar's manager John Vernaus.
