BRIEF STORYLINE: A sudden earthquake causes a buried tomb to become visible once again, and Merklynn calls on the Spectral Knights and Darkling Lords to immediately re-bury the tomb. While they are doing it Lexor fools Cindarr into summoning his power of Destruction. The monsters breaks open the door to the tomb. Cyrotek tries to put the damage to a minimum by conjuring his power of Might. However, something eventually comes out the tomb. These very small yellow creatures come out, called Sun Imps. The Visionaries laugh at their appearance thinking how can these little things possibly be dangerous? However, the smiles are over when the Sun Imps get the better of the Visionaries using their own specific magic spells. The Sun Imps run away and evade capture when the day becomes night. They cannot use their magic at night, and turn into their insect/animal forms. The next day the Sum Imps regain the upper hand, and cause havoc throughout New Valarak and Darkstorm's Castle.
Such things happens like Mortdredd giving away the treasury of Darkstorm's, Darkstorm is getting tied up in his own hair, Leoric is trapped(once again!) into his lion form and forced to obey one Sun Imp and Merklynn is surrounded by a cage and made to spin on his nose painfully.
As night returns again, the Darkling Lords and Spectral Knights agree to work together. They both capture the Sun Imps in boxes, which will make the Sun Imps unable to use their magic in the dark. They put them back in the tomb, but Cindarr once again slips up, and lets Shaggy the Hair Imp, escape. Cindarr gets generous with it, and will let him free if he promises not to cause mischief again. Shaggy crosses his fingers and promises. Just when you think Shaggy will be the one that gets away, he enters the tomb to collect the rest to become a nuisance yat again. However, Merklynn locks the door after Shaggy, and the Sun Imps are gone forever. Merklynn winks to the viewers and it's a happy ending to the last ever Visionaries episode ever.
THE END!!
REVIEW: The last ever episode of the Visionaries cartoon, and it doesn't go out on a high. Our first scene where we see our heroes Arzon & Feryl in once again, another scrap with the Darkling Lords, this time with Mortdredd and Cravex. Lacklustre opening with the best part being Cravex almost unleashing his power of Fear near the tomb. Also not too impressive, is Merklynn in his shrine telling of the Sun Imps to the Visionaries. But hang on, alot of the episode is unimpressive.
The Spectral Knights and Darkling Lords work together for nearly all of this episode. It's not the first time, but never as predominant as this. We also see both sides agreeing on certain things like maual labour. Are these signs that the quality of storylines may be going down? Hard to say, as it's only one episode, and the previous episode fared much better in storyline.
One of the better parts is Lexor fooling Cindarr to summon his power of Destruction to open the tomb. Lexor wants to be a leader, we can tell from this, but lacks the bravery of leadership. The visual introduction of the Sun Imps is uninspiring, and the variety of magic they use on the Visionaries scenes are badly edited. The Sum Imp characters are hard to take seriously, nevermind their small sizes, most have shrieky comical voice's.
However, some parts that do work is Arzon's Bearer of Knowledge going loopy, being controlled by the mischievious Sun Imps. It's really surprising to see this usually very dry, serious vision of a man with a giant brain to go like this, as he starts telling a recipe for garlic merangue pie. Leoric makes a funny line out of this bamboozling situation, as pies are thrown at him, "Arzon, get that thing in for repairs!" Funny? Yes. Good editing? No.
No better is the Visionaries chasing the Sun Imps as day becomes night. In the next day, the Sun Imps just come out of nowhere and into New Valarak. There is no more character development going on for Leoric and Feryl, and the Sun Imps steal all the limelight with their magic spells, with no real story to go along with most of the episode. Another badly edited scene, where Merklynn is confronted by his worst nightmare, which is Sun Imp Abraxas, who has the most amusing poem-spells. Same goes for Shaggy tormenting Darkstorm in his castle, and all the rest except for Knightmare, who smartly hynotises Mortdredd into thinking Darkstorm wants him to give all his money to the general public.
When it is the Visionaries turn to get even on the Sun Imps, the episode still doesn't improve. The only capture which is well edited, is Knightmare's, as Ectar transforms into a fox and runs rings around the Imp so fast that it causes him to knock himself out with the axe. The episode plunges to new depths of goofiness, including the Visionaries carrying a giant-sized pair of scissors, brush and razor to scare Shaggy the Hair Imp. Even sillier is the Visionaries walking around a giant birthday cake singing, to lure the Pig Imp Gorge.
As we come to the end, the exchange between Shaggy's pleading to get out of box and Cindarr falling for it, because of his generousity for animals/creatures, is quite good, and there is a charming ending where Merklynn, who is either intuitive or overheard the happenings, put Shaggy back into the tomb, and he gives a knowing wink to you, the viewer. Thankfully the Sun Imps were never seen again, but sadly also the demise of all our favourite characters which were the Visionaries. DAWN OF THE SUN IMPS GETS A: 2/5 RATING.
