Green Sanctuary Committee Meeting January 3, 2006 Attendance: Tom Swigart, Sandra Smith-Gill, Chris Hodge, Marney Bruce, Jessica Turner, and Glenn. GS Acreditation: --------------- Tom took the River Road charter as a base document and wrote a draft. He circulated to the group and got some good suggestions for revisions. He will have the revisions ready before the Programs Council meeting. Program Council Mtg ------------------- The next meeting is January 19th. All are welcome to attend. We will be talking about committee charters and whether to move the first service to 9:30. Earth Day and Earth Month ------------------------- The day we wanted for an Earth Day service has already been taken for a Youth Service day. We are going to try to get this to be a combined Youth/Earth Day service. There has been no word about this from Roberta, so Tom will contact her. [Late word - Roberta says she talked to Michelle and it's a groovy idea. We need to work out the ideas with the new DRE - Brandee Carrigan. Tom will try to invite her and the youth directors to the next meeting.] We are planning to do the following church duties every Sunday during Earth Month in April: Welcoming Ushering Tidy Trouping Flowers (wild) Kitchen work Sandi will try to get Douglass Gill to give a talk on restoration of flora and fauna on the eastern shore. We hope he can give it on one of the Sundays in April. We hope to get Scott Butki to host an environmental movie on Sunday the 9th as part of his movie series. Any other ideas for post-service presentations or activities? Work Parties: ------------ We will be having a work party on March 11th to restart work on the wildflower meadow. We hope to have Dick Manzer and Dave Hutchins lay down soil over the area that day. We need to decide what kind of material we can use for pathways through the meadow. Glenn had the great suggestion that the children could spread the wildflower seeds in the meadow, when the time comes! Adopt-a-road trash pick-up -------------------------- The next adopt-a-road pick-up will be either March 18th or 25th. We need to poll the group to see which day will be better. We also would like other groups to sponsor pick-ups in late May/early June, September, and Novemeber. We need to stress more church involvement here, as this is a great way to keep reaching out to our neighbors. Sierra Club ----------- Chris brought a flyer for a presentation that will be sponsored by the Sierra Club, Catoctin Group. The talk is entitled "True Cost of Food" and will be shown at the C. Burr Artz Public Library Community Room 110 E. Patrick St. in Frederick. The date/time is Wed Jan 25th at 6:45 p.m. Chris is looking into spreading the word about this. Coffee ------ Sandi got a big secure cabinet to store the coffee. She and Jessica have a key. The GS budget money will bear the cost of the cabinet. Sandi had a nice tea brochure and will be selling more organic teas at the table. Sales report: At the "Stocking Stuffer" sale, total sales were $1515.75, of which 1002.95 were SERRV and $512.80 were Green Sanctuary Coffee, Etc sales. Our costs for the SERRV portion were $798, for a net of $204.95. Approximate Coffee, Etc. Sales for this fall, by month, were: Sep $137 Oct $614 Nov $341 Dec $1042 Report from Janice Schlepp for July-December shows Total Income $4449.30 Total Expenses $2754.26** Net $1695,04 **Please note that this does not include all expenses for expanded inventory. Tabletop ideas -------------- We will stay on the two month schedule. The Feb/Mar theme was agreed to be on planting, but I don't know who volunteered. Any volunteers? The Apr/May theme will be green cleaning. Some ideas for the future: the acreditation process, transportaion alternatives to include getting folks involved with carpooling to church. Marney suggested making a map to mark where people are from to facillitate the carpooling. Organic Planet -------------- We discussed putting the Organic Planet affiliate on the websites. We decided to start with the main website, then see about where we might put it on our site. It was suggested that we make a list of farmer's markets for the Spring and post this around the church. The next meeting will be February 7th, 2006 at 7 p.m.
