Green Sanctuary Committee Meeting December 5, 2006 Attendance: Tom Swigart, Sandra Smith-Gill, Chris Hodge Earth Day --------- We need to start planning for Earth Day. April 22nd is a Sunday in 2007. We need to get on the schedule and see if Walter would like to give an Earth-centered sermon, or if he has other ideas. We could talk to CUUPs too. We believe the sermon should involve global warming and the UUs statement of conscience presented at the last yearly gathering. We hope that Common Market will sponsor a celebration at Baker's Park as they have in the past. Perhaps we could attend and represent the church. Chris will look into that. We will also take on the clening, ushering, greeting for that weekend, but not the whole month like last year. Marney is now a certified global warming expert by the World Widlife Federation! Various Presentations --------------------- The Sierra Club will be giving a presentation at the JPD Youth Congress in January. Chris will be taking part. Sandi Might do a presentation on Fair Trade as well. Tom will lead a food safety Friendly Forum discussion on February 4th. We will be showing Kilowatt Ours on March 4th at 12:30. We need a projector. [The church needs one in general]. We will have food available at the showing. Marney will lead a global warming Friendly Forum discussion on March 11. Compact Fluorescent Lightbulbs ------------------------------ Sandi would like to get BOT approval to sell CFLs to the congregation. Pehaps the money earned could go into buying a projector, screen, curtains. The profit margin would be high, but the congregation would still save money versus store-bought ones. We discussed the environmental impact of the bulbs. There is some concern, but it is thought that since the bulbs are replaced less often, that the impact is less than standard bulbs. The energy savings and carbon savings makes them well worth it.
