Go To Experiments in HTML

In The Beginning . . .

This is my first attempt at creating a web page. I always wanted to create one, I just never found the time. I have used of graphic design programs for many years which I would like to incorporate some unique formatting of the pages in the future. I know these pages could look alittle more eye-pleasing, but I think it gave me a good start at learning the basics of webpage composure. As I went along, I decided to do more than one page to learn how to link the pages.

I found the templates pretty easy to follow, but then I decided to add a page using just HTML. (This is the Resources page -- "Great Quotes & Stories".) I also have a background in database programming & design, particularly in dBase IV and V. HTML is just like that database programming; if you forget just one symbol/sign, you mess up the page.

I ran into a snag trying to add an image to both the Angelfire template and my HTML page, but through trial and error figured that out. I needed to add the entire website address for angelfire before my actual page address.
(Whew!)

Also, when you sign up for an account here at Angelfire the basic shell creates a directory call "images" to upload images. Thank goodness for my database experience because my images directory disappeared and I needed to recreate it!

It took some trial and error to also get the links from page to page working correctly, but I worked that one out, too. Adding the links on the "RESOURCES" html page was the a little hard, but I finally figured out the correct code.

Experiments in HTML (Things that I tried)

I wanted the experience of loading images from the Angelfire clip art gallery and also from my hard drive. So that's what I did. I did some searches for related websites and added them to create the subject matter for the Resources page.

Every time I ran into something that didn't work, it took me several hours to straighten it out, but it was rewarding once it worked. However it was frustrating when something didn't work -- like trying to get my graphic at the top of this page to blink!I had typos that made commands not work like typing "herf" instead of "href" and when you're tired it's hard to see these things!

You should be able to get to any of the other pages from each of the four pages that comprise this site.

I went to a couple websites that offer tutorials and they helped give me some basic html codes. I tried hyperlinking from the top section of this page to the "Experiments" section toward the bottom. Like adding images I played around with the correct address string. It didn't work no matter what I tried so I closed up and let it sit for a few days. When I came back to work on these pages again, the hyperlink worked! I still haven't figured that one out unless the Angelfire site took some time to update this file. Then I had a problem on page 2 with a line of code showing up underneath the photo image. After a few attempts, I figured out that there were too many brackets around the line of code so the command did not work as it should and showed up as text on the page. I removed the extra brackets and it then worked as it should.

Even learning to work some basic html commands into these Angelfire text pages took alittle time, but I wanted to show you how far I've grown with this project. My next experiment will be with FrontPage.

The advantages of using this type of site is that it's free to access and it gives some templates to get you started right away.

Some of the disadvantages include getting those annoying banner ads. It is also a little cumbersome trying to work the pages when you want to be creative.
