The Golden Gate Bridge Continues...

All the features built into the bridge have their own special purposes, and are necessary in the safe-keeping of the bridge, and everything that revolves around it. The Golden Gate Bridge is a suspension bridge , meaning it hangs on cables. The floor of the bridge is 220 feet above the water, and 90 feet wide. It has a six-lane road and sidewalks. The bridge completion totaled a cost of 35 ½ million dollars.

The Golden Gate Bridge is a suspension bridge. A suspension bridge is a bridge having the roadway suspended from cables that are anchored at either end and usually supported at intervals by towers. The towers of the Golden Gate Bridge are the first structures seen from ships approaching San Francisco. These towers are at both ends of the bridge, and about 1 120 feet from both ends. They hold up the two steel cables, which measure 36 and ½ inches in diameter, from which the bridge hangs.
