What Is Dead City Moments ?

This is a transcript of the latest interview taken from Topia Fanzine

• Hey guys, How's it going? Mike: Not bad, just lazing around,lol / Darris: Haha, ya man, were just enjoying our summer vacation, by doing the outmost of nothing!
• Considering whats coming ahead, I don't blame you~M: Ya exactly, in the next week or so, he gotta start rehearsing again, to get back in the grove / D: I mean, we've been doing our own thing, but ya, we gotta get back to work
• You guys have a new album coming out this fall, tell me how the first one did~ D: Well it did alot better than any of us thought it would. We basically joined up and wrote the entire album in the studio. We never thought we would be a band really, just a bunch of guys having some fun
• That perception has changed I'm guessing?~ M: Well ya for sure it has. Based on how well the first album did we thought to continue with this. It turned out that we enjoyed writing together, Dead City Moments is something that will be always chaning / D: Exactly, we always try to do stuff that artistic and intellectual. Really taking the listener on a journey. I mean this isnt music that you would listen to while driving to work, its the type where you just have to sit down and take the time to embrace it.
• Is change an important part of the band?~ M: I think so ya, change is good isnt it? I mean when I look back at my days in Urizen. I had black hair almost touching my waist. I would be wearing spiked bullet belts and combat boots. Now I have short red hair and dress plainly. People change. What felt natural then, doesn't feel natural now. Its inevitable / D: I think the basic premise of music is always try to explore with different sounds and seeing what you come up with. I mean, people label us as an ambience band which I think is a total misinterpretation because we are so much more. We have elements of rock,jazz,classical,pop,hell even metal
• Mike how was the transition from metal to electronica?~ M: Well, it wasn't hard at all if thats what your implying. Music is music and I write music not for a certain type of medium but for any medium. Of course with this band now, I had to learn some computer stuff, but I learned it all fast. Darris is a genious when it comes to that stuff
• What was the concept of 'Songs for The Mind's Catastrophe'?~ M: Exactly as the name suggests, its a journey through the mind and the downfall a person has. The songs from beginning to end kept changing moods much like people do every day. Change moods. And sometimes, these moods change for the worst. / D: Its a concept story of a man who starts as a sane person and by the end has explored pain, sorrow, murder..all these moments until the bitter end
• MirrorEyes is set to be released this fall, is it any different from the first one and what can fans expect?~ M: MirrorEyes is a more structured concept album compared to the first one. The Mind's Catastrophe didnt really have any structure, each song flowed into the other. This time around, we made structured songs that have the ideal time signatures. Of course there are still the oddity of songs, but fans can expect an album that is less angry than the first one and more sad / D: The mood is really different on MirrorEyes. The songs in my opinion are depressing sometimes yet at the same time beautiful. Like Mike said, this album is more structured. We wrote this album before entering the studio rather than writing in the studio. It is a great album, and I cant wait for people's reactions
• What is the story of MirrorEyes?~ M: I wrote the lyrics and the whole conception of the story with the first album in mind. This story still takes place in the same dark fictional city as the first one which is 'dead city'. A woman looses her child to death and she is haunted by the imagery of her child, these ghosts that leave her alone. The album looks at differnt emotions of loss, hope, and pain. It is a much more meloncholy album compared to the first one, but more spiritual in my opinion in sound
• The first album had only one song with vocals and this one will have 5 songs with vocals, why the change?~ M: In ambience music its hard to find music where vocals can fit in. The first album had only one song with vocals because it was the only songs that could fit vocals into it. Vocals take structure and has to be worked around the music. It was hard for the first one to do that but this one, we could fit vocals
• How have you come as a vocalist?~ M: Well back in Urizen I was doing your typical black metal grim vox with the occasional clean vox thrown in. Ive for sure developed as a clean singer and sing much better now than I did than. I still don't consider myself as a good vocalist,lol, im no bruce dickinson. / D: Mike has come along way, and don't listen to him when he says he's not a good singer, because after listening to MirrorEyes you'll be convinced as I that he is one of the best singers in my opinion. His voice has become very angellic when singing. Ironic because he sounds like demon when he talks normal, haha
• This is going to be your first big tour, what are your thought?~ M: Well aside from playing 2 hows in the past, this is our first real tour. I mean were playing in cities like NY,Chicago and Boston. I didn't even know we had fans there. It should be exciting / D: And the fact that we have 2 new full time members, were a now complete band
• Chris and Fantoft, How did you hook up with them?~ M: of course everyone knows they are my former band mates and me and Chris have been good friends for the longest of time. Both he and Fantoft were out of their musical projects. We were looking for musicians, I called them, we met up and jammed, and the rest in now history / D: Both chris and fantoft are great musicians are the chemistry fit so well. They like what we do, and I think the best is yet to come
• Mike, to get off topic for a bit, will there ever be another Urizen album now that yoir working again with chris and fantoft?~ M: well, our plans was to always finish off the Dark Usiel Saga, and we talked about it in the past. It will be odd because 3/4 members of Urizen is now DCM and 3/d members of DCM was Urizen. But yes, their will be a new Urizen album in the future
• Will Cross be on Drums?~ M: Everyone knows the hisory between me and Cross, and the answer is no, I wont work with him nor will he be on the album. Ever
• I'm guessing Jestyr will be filling on Drums?~ M: Thats right
• Will it be the final chapter in The Dark Usiel Trilogy?~ M: I really don't want to say much about it. I'm only going to start writing the album after the tour and everything is out of the way. I will tell you that the album will be called DREAMWINTER ETHEREAL and it may and probably be the last album under the Urizen name. Theres no set plan for it. So we'll wait and see
• What other projects are on the horizen?~ D: Besides new material from DCM, I plan on doing a solo album that will be techno if anything. I also plan to produce more albums from other bands / M: I have a comic book that I wrote and pencilled that will be coming out in January as well as working on a film project through my film company. Thats all I'm at liberty to say right now
• You have an ep that will be available only at shows correct?~ M: Thats right, its the 'Emotion Overload' ep / D: It's basically songs that were recorded during 'The Mind's Catastrophe' sessions. It includes 4 songs I believe that didnt fit onto the concept so we decided, well our recoed company decided to release it. Its more abstract and should be an interesting listen
• Any Final Thoughts?~ M: I want to thank everyone who takes interest in this band and hope to see you all on tour! / D: We have alot more from this band on the way, and stick around because more dead city moments will flow

Dead City Moments performs artistic intellectual ambience music for the mind. Unlike other forms of electronica, such as Techno which plays on adrenaline, ambience plays on emotion. While Dead City Moments' music is dark in nature, it asks the mind to fabricate a vision of senses. Perhaps the band is a concept piece, telling stories, or dreams if you will. This is the perfect type of music to listen to while sitting in total darkness or falling asleep. That is when the true impact of the music will affect you the most. DCM expresses emotions caught in moments that all of us feel each and every day. Pain, Torture, Love, Sacrifice, Reverence, Loss, Hope. Dead City Moments flow through us all...
