Luthien used his magical voice to put Melkor/Morgoth to sleep, then Beren grabbed his knife and cut one of the three silmarilli from Melkor/Morgoth's crown. Beren was going to cut another silmarill but his knife broke. After the men, elves and eagles defeated the orcs, balrogs and dragons in the final battle they captured Melkor/Morgoth and removed the remaining silmarilli from his crown.
